We’ll just for you I will revise my young, and inexperienced statement, because for some reason I thought Houck had been around for 3-4 years. I don’t know why, but I did. I still though would rather see Whitlock in the pen in the late innings, and that’s the biggest reason I would put Houck in the rotation over Him.

II totally respect that view and see several reasons to choose Houck over Whitlock. It's nearly a 50-50 choice, to me.

I’d rather leave both in the pen but I think we’re one injury away from both in the rotation…

Same here. If Wacha or Hill suck, we could see both starting by May.

I will go on a limb and say that by the A-S game the Red Sox will have needed 8 pitchers to start multiple games ( more than once). Where is that depth now?

Probably on other rosters

If Sale returns in 8 weeks, he'll be one.

Here's a stab at the 8 from within the system.

Eovaldi

Pivetts

Wacha

Hill

Houck

Whitlock

Sale

1 from Wonckowski, Crawford, Seabold or Bello

Bradford saying Paxton is aiming for a June or early July return. That could pay huge dividends, and could be the 8th man depending on when he returns.

Derek Holland to the rescue.

Not sure what he has left in the tank, but if he can help bridge us to sale’s return, then his signing makes sense!

Wacha is a number 5 at this stage .Id go Evo ,Pivetta ,Hill to start the season .then Go Evo ,Pivetta ,Sale ,Hill ,Wacha .Sale is not the pitcher he once was he’s a good 3 now and gets shelled far too often even though his name is Chris Sale . Edited by Swiharts Ghost

Paxton will be this year's Sale, coming back in the second half as the designated pitcher to face the Orioles. This is an important role that the Sox now see as a legitimate annual strategy: allowing the key staff members to rest up before facing rivals for wild card berths.

Sale will be this year's Price in his LA twilight role, transitioning into an occasional bullpen piece, an inning a week, then two, slowly stretching out for an ultimate spot start in the nightcap of a late-summer doubleheader.

Expecting anything from Paxton is a foolish game. He's a mashup of injured parts melded together to look like a massive, sturdy pitcher

That’s only because he’s Canadian…

And yet, I remember when Yankee fans on this very forum predicted the mighty Yankees to win it all back when they featured the Big Mapo.

That's what you told us about Big Nate.

We've basically added 6 new names to the 26 man roster and 5 were pitchers.

True, most just replaced who we had in the same slots, last year.

JBJ

Paxton

Wacha

Hill

Diekman

Strahm

(We kept Barnes, Robles and Vaz + arb players)

Sadly, I think we are done adding pitchers before opening day. Here's a breakdown of the innings lost from 2021 and who might replace those innings in 2022:

158 ERod (100 ERA+) Maybe 58 more from Sale & 100 from Paxton

137 Richards (97) Maybe 137 from Wacha

114 Perez (100) Maybe 114 from Hill

62 Ottavino (113) Maybe 32 more from Houck & 10 more from Barnes, Taylor & Saw.

37 Andriese (79) Maybe 61 from Diekman

24 Y Rios (129) (61 from Diekman)

20 Workman (97) + ~40 Brice, Weber, Peacock & others - Maybe 60 from Strahm & Robles combined

Lots of wishful thinking, here.

Hope is never a good strategy!

Offensively, we lost a monster bat in schwarber and a mediocre bat in Renfro.

We have added a superior defender, but a terrible bat, in Bradley. Bradley is an “0 for” hitter. Zero hits for almost every at bat.

We desperately need another strong infield right handed hitter to balance this line up.

96 RBI from Renfroe was more than a mediocre bat, and Flintstone Schwarber was no monster either.

Schwarber put up a .435 OBP and .957 OPS for us in 41 regular season games. Can't expect much more than that.

Renfroe had an .816 OPS. Schwarber had a .957 OPS for Boston. Schwarber was a much better weapon at the plate…

I could care less about OPS. All I said was that 96 RBI is more than a mediocre bat, and Flintstone was no monster man. Nothing more, and nothing less. Like I said before YABBA DABBA DOO Flintstone Schwaber is gone too.

Without Renfroe, and his 96 RBI last year the Sox wouldn’t have made the post season. 96 RBI is not mediocre even in todays analytics world, and that all I was saying. Schwaber is not a RBI guy, which I have mentioned more than once on here, and I’m glad he is long gone. Never would have been a replacement for JD.

Schwarber batted leadoff a lot. No one puts up RBIs batting leadoff…

Not caring about OPS goes beyond old school into crazy school.

Is 96 RBI mediocre?

Renfroe had a good year with the stick, no one is arguing that.

For people who get hung up on RBI I like to point out these stats from the 2007 Red Sox:

Pedroia .317 BA 50 RBI

Lugo .237 BA 73 RBI

All I care about is Renfroe had 96 RBI, which is better than mediocre, and I don’t care how he got them. Call it crazy all you want, and you can have your stats, and I’ll have mine.
