I counciled Bloom away from Matz, but Gray is the move I would float to Bloom. Gray is a power pitcher who had weird splits in Colorado. The guy has been dominant in the past, but also suffers from maddening inconsistency on a dying franchise in a place where balls act like superballs when hit. I think he is the "buy low" candidate here with the biggest upside. If the sox can right him, his stuff plays up as a 2 or fringe 1

I had hopes we’d trade for him, last deadline.

I’d prefer him to Matz, too.

Manny Pina signs with Braves for $8/2. That’s more than I expected.

This was a guy I thought we might replace Vaz or Plawecki with.

I’d have loved Pina for the Yanks. We need to have a defense first guy who isn’t a total auto out with the bat

The Braves prove they are smart.

i have had enough of him. Time to move in.

From the Boston Analytics Dept: No pitcher in the history of the 10-year-old Red Sox fan in my living room has elicited more first-inning screams of frustration.

All I can say is about E-Rod's deal is that it seems to be a good sign for the financial health of the game.

I think he got close to what was expected, so in that sense, yes. Contracts don’t seem to be getting any smaller.

I did expect more before the opt out. He could have gotten $18.4M/1 and basically got $9.6M for year two.

I think this is a bad sign of things to come for the Sox. The fact that E Rod signed so quick looks like there wasn’t much negotiations back, and forth with the Sox, and he wanted out. If the Sox won’t spend on one of their own then I don’t see them spending for anyone else, which means bargain hunting like last year.

I don't know, the fact that E Rod signed so quick might just mean the Tigers' offer was too good to resist. $77 mill and an opt-out after 2 years was a pretty sweet offer. Especially with all the so-called uncertainty with the new CBA etc. Maybe E-Rod's agent said 'I suggest you jump all over this, my friend!', and E-Rod had to agree.

It's anyone's guess what the Sox offered. Maybe it was for the same money but less years. At any rate, E-Rod is gone and we will be looking. With thee CBA negotiations not making progress, I doubt if teams will be willing to lay out the bigger contracts and FA will go on hold. It might be a good idea for the Sox to fill at least some of the medium contract pitchers before Dec 1 though..

There is a very good (roughly 100%) chance you're reading way too much into this.

One thing I have learned over the years of watching baseball - while players do occasionally leave teams because they want off that particular team, it's nowhere near as common as fans think. I've seen players sign with teams they had on-field brawls with the season before. Signing with a new team is almost always about 1 of 2 things - years and/or money. Bottom line with ERod is, Boston probably did not match Detroit on both...

It's actually possible that, as a team up against the tax limits, Bloom wanted to know what the parameters of the new CBA were before signing anyone. Detroit has no such worries...

He's a FB/SL guy who can throw some junk against LHP. His FB gets a little bit of movement, but has a wOBA above 400 and a run value 16 in 2021. I don't think his stuff plays up very much. IMO, he's an expensive 3. Rockies offered him 3/40 and he didn't take it. My guess is he's gonna get something in the 14-15AAV range.

If Vaz didn't get the option picked up, they could've grabbed him. Oh well.

Not a good sign for this offseason then.

I’m looking more into the Red Sox didn’t want to spend that kind of money aspect of things then if E Rod wanted out, which is a bad sign that the Sox will not open any wallets this off season.

And he has also shown himself to operate at an unhurried pace even without the CBA concerns...

We all have our own hot takes. :)

I think you're looking way to much into this, Notin is right. You assume way to much of the worse. The new CBA still looms overhead and salaries could actually go down, Erod might have jumped at the best offer out there that also gives him an opt out in 2 years if he can make more. He also knows that the Sox focus on spending money is going to be on extensions for guys like Bogaerts, and Devers. The money won't be there for him.

The Sox are going to spend money.

I’m going by what Sam Kennedy said at the end of year press conference that the Red Sox were going to follow the same blueprint as last year, which to me means there won’t be any big long term contracts coming Boston’s way this off season, and no big trades despite all the hopes, and wishes of all the pundits on here.
