??Houck??

??Whitlock??

With the back two slots being currently slotted for two guys who spent most of their big league time in the pen in 2021, it makes one wonder which veteran starter the sox will bring in. I highly, highly, highly doubt the sox roll into ST without another veteran or two in the rotation

I seriously doubt both Houck and Whitlock move to the rotation. (I'd prefer neither do.)

I think we'll trade for a younger and less expensive SP'er on his last arb or two.

I continue to be concerned about Castillo coming to Boston. It's the type of pitcher Bloom salivates over. The return would be exorbitant, but he would be a possible ace in the making. Plus, the sox have had a national league Dominican fireballer come over before and it worked out pretty well last I checked.

If the Reds did not have Votto, I would think Casas would be a cornerstone of a trade for Castillo. Maybe a third team might get involved.

I doubt we trade Mayer for 2 years of Castillo, but if an extension can be agreed to before the trade is finalizes (does this happen anymore?) maybe we go crazy for him.

It's hard to imaging us finding any package that would land us Castillo without Casas or Mayer.

One possiblity would be if we take Moustakas with Castillo. (BTV has Mike at about -$30M value and Castillo at +68M.)

BTV accepts

Verddugo & Groome

for

Castillo & Moustakas

or

Duran, Downs and Groome for the same two, but it also accepts this unlikely combo:

Duran, Downs, Dalbec & Yorke for Castillo, alone.

Heartbroken that E-Rod is gone.

I was a big ERod fan, even when he was struggling to get out of the 5th inning for a couple years way back when.

The team won, when he started. They won over 72% of his starts since 2018. I'm pretty sure that is a ML best.

i really doubt that Bloom is going to trade future cornerstone players for any pitcher. I suggest that Casas, Mayer, Verdugo, and Yorke all belong in the no trade category.

I would venture that not all of them are future conrnerstones.

Now, Castillo might be one.

If the Sox can get Luis Castillo for Houck and Duran, it's probably a wise move. Houck is good, but Castillo is better....

I don't see Verdugo as a cornerstone. He's much more of a complimentary player. He showed a big spark in 2020, but 2021 was underwhelming IMO.

Not to mention the notion that we have to keep all of our good prospects out of trade consideration is very counterproductive. The very ones we want to keep are the ones most teams will want.

And in the long run, some of them are going to suck.

But sometimes prospects are like cryptocurrencies. Deal them when you think they're at the most valuable, and then let someone else HODL...

I could see them trading anyone but Mayer right now and I could talk myself into liking it.

I feel the same.

I would not like casas for Castillo, unless we locked him up LT.

It wouldn't be a one for one trade. It could be something like Castillo and Moustakas (plus eating some salary) for Casas.

Chris Taylor rejects QO.

Man, how many comp picks will the Dodgers get?

(Good thing, not one for Kershaw.)

No decision on Syndergaard yet?

Posted
Why did the Rockies hold onto Jon Gray at the deadline, but not give him a QO after? What a waste.

That was strange. VERY STRANGE!

Again I just don't get you.

Have a back up plan yes but why not give both the chance to start. You have $1M options for two starting spots. But you want to spend $15-30M for mediocre starting pitchers that no one wants.

That is so typical Red Sox fan mindset.

Unf***ing believable.

You really think keeping two pitchers where they have proven to be great is that absurd?

You'd want us to spend huge on R Iglesias and Brad Hand?

To me, that is unf***ing believable! (and a typical Sox fan mindset.)

BTW, I wouldn't mind moving one, preferably Whitlock, to the rotation, but to me, it's easier to sign a reliable SP'er than a reliable closer.

Tell me that is absurd.

If the Sox truly believed that they both could be effective long term starters, they both would be put into the rotation. I think one of the stays in the pen just because their peak value is not in the rotation.

My only guess is that they saw the opportunity cost of not being able to negotiate an extension in Sept/Oct was greater than the returns they were being offered. Maybe they really thought he'd sign an extension before FA hit? IDK.

They did extend Cron prior to FA.

They could offer a QO, then extend him.

I think the logic is easy.

Both are outstanding relief pitchers and unknown commodities as starters.

It doesn't strike me as being all that difficult to believe, Especially given how important the bullpen is rapidly becoming...

Excellent closers are not easy to find at a low cost.

I think Houck has a great profile to be a top closer, next year. I like him better than Iglesias or Hand and he'll be $10-14M cheaper.

Whitlock looks like he could be a very good SP'er and can get through the 3rd time through more easily than Houck, but having a RP'er that can go 2-3 innings is a huge asset in an era where starters rarely go 5 or 6 innings.

Again, I'm fine, if we use Whitlock as a starter, especially if we can trade for Trivino or the like, but until we do, I'm thinking I'd rather us sign Stroman, Glausman, Ray or Rodon than Igesias or Hand. (Matz > Hand, too.)

It certainly is not "unf***ing believable!"
