He did that for the younger players... er, wait -- he's the younger player. So he's probably considering his family; they can't live on $350 mil...

... that would be all his countrymen, one big unhappy family -- the population of the Dominican Republic, approx. 11 million people, divided by $350 million dollars = almost $32 mil each. Over 13 years, that's less than $2 1/2 million per. What man, woman or child can possibly live on only $2.4 mil each per year?

Former poster UN? sitting at home waiting on that $32M check coming his way...

I heard a TV pundit say that Michael Bloomberg had enough money to give one million dollars to every person in the U.S. , and still have plenty left. No, he doesn't. He is filthy rich , but not nearly that rich. It is a fairly common math error that folks make even though it is basic arithmetic.

True.

I did read somewhere that all the billionaires (like 2,150 of 'em) in the world own more wealth than 4.6 billion people.

I think Elon Musk is worth over $200 billion. If my math is right, I think that comes to about $600 per American.

That's pretty significant.

My father never played sports, but he fished a lot. No trolling though; the man could cast.

The 90/10 thing seems to apply to everything.

Not all things. I just read a study claiming, contrary to popular belief, it's not Don Juan's and what we used to call 'nymphomaniacs' who have the most sex, but rather boring, ordinary married folks!

What this has to do with baseball, I don't know. But we have to talk about something ...

Juan Soto turned down a 13-year, $350 million contract from the Washington Nationals before the lockout, according to this @Enrique_Rojas1 report. In the story, Soto confirms the offer.

This is why I have no sympathy for either side. A player that turns down a $350M contract, and an owner who offered that much in the first place.

Someone(s) pays Oprah Winfrey about $200M a year, so in this context, it's not so shocking.

No it’s not, but you don’t have to pay, and pay big money to watch her in person, or on TV.

No, I dumped my cable TV and the ever-increasing bill.

I with you there. As I get older I have less, and less tolerance for either side, and will have even less if there is any disruption in the season, which is looking more, and more like that will happen.

So $350 million divided by 11 million = $32 million?

I could go to 8 Astros games a month for 6 months for the price of cable TV.

Wrong again. It’s the Furries…

Certainly -- I got a repeating decimal on my calculator: 31.18181818181818... I figure that will eventually reach a million digits.

Maybe Juan couldn't make everyone in the DR millionaires... but he could definitely afford to buy everyone a pretzel and beverage of choice at a Nationals game (and that ain't cheap).

... Juan Soto just got the most offers, but Scott Boras made him turn them down.

I’d turn that down too if I was Soto. Soto is going to make $16 mil or so in 22. That’ll bring his career earning around $28 mil, so it’s not like this is his first paycheck. He’ll play all of 2022 as a 23 yr old. He will be freshly 26 when he hits free agency. 13 for $350m is $27m a year. Mike Trout makes $36 mil a year. My bet is he targets Trout as the contract to beat and in a couple years, he likely will.

This is way different than the Franco deal. Franco didn’t get a full year of service time. Franco’s deal includes all 6 years of team control they already had on him. Also, Franco hasn’t made life changing money already.

MLB could do without Soto but where could Soto get such a lucrative offer outside of MLB?

Not anywhere near this, but that's not really the issue. He can and likely will make more, if he waits it out.

He won’t make MLB money in Japan, but he’ll still wind up being filthy rich by my standards…

John Valentin turns 55 today. In the six seasons from 1993–98, he compiled 30.8 WAR (+83 Rbat, +76 Rfield), 11th in baseball. He did that with four years as a primary SS, one as a primary 2B, and one as a primary 3B.

I got a good Val moment: loudest Fenway crowd I ever witnessed live. Game 3 ALCS 1999... Pedro vs Roger... first two batters, bottom of 1st... Offerman triple, Valentin homer... 13-1 Boston.

I think the point is more to do with how much money one needs and how one players greed will impact what the team can do for others.

...and just how much money do the owners need? My view is the owner's greed is less excusable, since they started out filthy rich.

Have you ever googled the owner of the Mets net worth?
