I judge Bloom separately on every move, and then the the final outcome.

I judge him on the total net result. Some of his moves are going to turn out badly, that's a given. Nobody can be perfect when it comes to betting on how baseball players are going to perform.

Any person who’s job involves predicting the future is going to be wrong sometimes…

Everyone comments on every move, and also the net results.

That’s what he gets paid the big bucks for to get it right more often than wrong.

"Comments", sure. Some of us have suspended judgment on moves like the Renfroe-JBJ trade, though, while others have not.

That’s the way it should be.

Sonny Gray to Twins for Chase Petty & Francis Peguero

Ottavino to sign with Mets for $4M

Is your favorite JBJ trade going to be the Sox blockbuster this off season?

I keep thinking we will trade for a SP'er, but who knows?

JBJ wasn’t reacquired because they wanted JBJ, imo. I think Bloom bought himself prospects by taking JBJ’s contract.

I think Bloom also thought Renfroe needed replacing- both for defense and possibly the belief his O was bound to regress.

I hope he's not counting on Duran to take up the slack.

I don’t think Duran is in their major plans at this moment, but that could change maybe with a hot ST as short as it is.

Renfroe has been up and down in his career. Bloom sells when value is high. Renfroe wasn’t going to get much higher in value

Exactly!

Hang’em Chaim craves value, whether coming into or leaving the organization!

And unless ordered by Henry, Bloom won’t be backed into a bad deal. I have a been consistent that Bogaerts is in his final year as a Red Sox, and I thought he’d have been dealt already if not for the lockout. While you won’t see Sox lifers with Bloom, you’ll never have a down phase.

Also, to revisit the Renfroe deal, Bloom got a capable defensive replacement and two non notable prospects…… until you look at the prospects. Hamilton is a bat to ball burner with plus speed and defensive versatility. Binelas is a plodding hitter without a position. Both guys offer a unique top tool, Hamilton speed and Binelas power. If you’re going to load up on singular skills sets, speed and power aren’t bad ones to shoot for

Hang’em Chaim seems to have value two things with hitters above all else:

High contact rates and power.

At some point Hang’em Chaim is going to develop an ace pitcher. (Side note: it might help if he drafted one highly.) but once he has that ace, that is when he gives out the monster second contract.

I doubt he will to be honest with you. Who’s the last true ace developed by Tampa? Blake Snell, drafted 11 years ago. But you’ll get a few guys capable of giving innings who can K guys or get good GB rates and be flexible to relieve as a bulk guy

You might be right, in the last two drafts he has done

nothing early via starting pitching.

Agreed. I'm nearly certain we add a RH'd OF bat that may delegate Duran to AAA to start the season.

My point was that as of now, he's about the only plan B we have.

Doesn't "sell high" imply you get something of value back?

(sarcasm alert)

Price was drafted while Bloom was in the Rays organization. True he was promoted to a bigger role, the year after Price was drafted, but I think he may have had a say in that pick.

He got a couple good years from Matt Moore before dumping him. Stanek did pretty well as a starter.

He traded for Glasnow.

Shane McClanahan would be our 3rd starter, this year.

@alexspeier

While Chaim Bloom says the Red Sox are looking for a RH bat, he says that does "not necessarily" rule out a pursuit of Kyle Schwarber. He suggests the roster is flexible enough that the team doesn't need to limit itself in terms of where it looks to add talent.

I guess maybe if it's Schwarber AND a RHB.

Like maybe just a role player RH'd bat?

Are we done adding to the pitching staff?

God, I hope not.

I think they'll add 2 more relievers. My preference would be for them to sign Suzuki. If they only grab McCutchen, it'd be a bit of a letdown.

I'd be thrilled with Suzuki & McHugh.

Would those two put us over the tax line? (If yes, what salary can we dump, if we wish to remain tax-free?)

It's up to 230, so they should be good.
