That's what the golf world is doing. There are televised matches each of the next 2 Sundays with all proceeds going to charity/relief efforts

Well dang. This just might be enough to make me become a golf fan. Seriously.

This Sunday is all pros. I believe it's for $2M for relief. The week after is Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Tom Brady, and Peyton Manning. I forget how much they will raise for that one.

Social distancing will be followed, of course

Worrying about paying ballplayers when Bezos is about to become a trillionaire...

What's the over/under as to when Jeff Bezos has all the money in the country? November 1st sound about right?

Not prorated, he's out at revenue share.

Worrying about paying ballplayers when Bezos is about to become a trillionaire...

I have heard a lot of stories about medical workers or front line workers who either sleep in their cars or in their garages because they are afraid of infecting their families. I heard of a grocery store clerk who is a high school senior who moved out from his parents' house and hasn't seen them in months because one of his parents is high risk.

I heard a story of a nurse who quit her paid position at a hospital in her hometown, moved to NYC, has been living out of a hotel, and is volunteering there for a couple of months to help out NYC with their overwhelming number of hospitalizations. She is not getting paid, and she has not seen her kids in 2 months.

The stories like these go on and on and on.

Blake Snell needs to get a clue.

Do you think grocery clerks and health care professionals' working conditions will improve if Snell risks his life and career ensuring that the owners get more money this year?

In a way, we all risk our lives everyday, even when we're not in a pandemic. Snell's argument is stupid for a number of reasons, but that's the most striking

Yup. Over and over and over. When the workers come in conflict with the massa's, the American public almost inevitably sides with the bosses. This is in part why we have people in this country like D.T. and Bezos.

This is specifically about risking our lives in our job though. I honestly don't feel like I'm risking my life when I'm punching numbers into a computer.

And why do they side with the bosses is the question. When it comes to sports, the public is angry about having their entertainment taken away. I suppose it's natural they'll blame the entertainers first.

Just throwing that out there.

You know the answer to that. People are already pushing back about the bare minimum of social distancing. We’re almost back to the “let me talk to your manager” stage.

No.

“They get paid millions to play a kids game” (while we obsessively watch them for 450+ hours a year).

Right, you hear that one a lot.

I've certainly argued on behalf of the owners my fair share.

But as for Blake Snell, it sounds to me like he's got a valid case.

As Vladimir and Estragon say: Let's have a name-calling contest!

So back at you: "More capitalist pig claptrap."

Yes you have. But we agree on this. This is NOT the flu. Not only will a player be away from his family for the summer, he also risks losing his livelihood if he catches this. Sure, my friend who had it (very fit and athletic) and figures after a few months he's back to "80%", will still be able, say, to play golf (although likely with a cart), and still work. But a prof. athlete who gets back to 80 or 90% is likely out of a job. Given the financial naivete of many players (living, incredibly, 'paycheck to paycheck'), there will be plenty of players who will take the risk. But many of those who have managed their finances wisely may well take the year off. The owners, of course, are risking nothing.

I remember that contest well. The insult that ended the contest was 'Critic!'.

Well if you want to get technical, you could die at any point throughout the day. Might not be directly because of your job, but that risk is always there

Risk comes in degrees.

Blake Snell is a whiny, little baby. Sit out if you don't want to play but don't complain about not making your millions when 36 million Americans are out of work. He is guaranteed 39 more million from TB after this season. He has about 0.1 percent of dying from COVID-19. He has a much better chance of dying from a line drive up the middle than COVID. He comes across as greedy and I will always root against him.

Yeah, let's see. My ideal society: one in which everyone is treated equally and has access to social services, OR one in which the rich and powerful can f*ck over the weak with impuny and social services are limited to those who have money.

Hmmm. You know, for a Christian, it's just so hard to decide.

Not sure what that has to do with baseball.

Bezos should give all of his Amazon everyday employees significant raises and bonuses. In a battle between everyday working class people and a billionaire CEO, I'm siding with the working class people.

OK, that's three posts in a row that really don't have anything to do with the issue at hand.

Non sequitur, as you guys enjoy saying.

FTR, I am not siding with the bosses. I am not siding with either side. The owners are equally to blame here, but that doesn't excuse the players from being so unplugged from reality.

What both sides should be saying is that they would really like to see the return of baseball because it would be good for the people, that the safety of everyone involved is their top priority, and that they are confident that there will be a resolution. And leave it at that.

I mostly agree with this.
