This is all fantasy. The time value of money makes that a stupid decision financially. He took less than market value to get a longer contract and stay in Boston. He’s earned his contract already. The Sox don’t have the cap space to play funny games with his contract, like change the final two years into a single year with all the guaranteed money or attach an option that would never vest and shift the $25 mil to the 2020 tax ledger. It benefits nobody for them to do that. What’s going to happen is this. Pedey is going to get evaluated, either get surgery or rehab and try one more time. If it doesn’t get better, he will effectively be relegated to the 60 day DL

It would certainly benefit the Sox, if they could get away with it.

Pedey gives up his player salary by retiring.

He then makes the same plus some more for coaching.

We pay no more taxes on his money ($13.75 x 2 years).

If they can get away with it, it helps a lot.

Very unethical and dishonest.

When has that ever stopped a company from trying?

True, but this would be such a blatant and transparent attempt to circumvent the tax rules.

I agree, and that's why I asked, if it was legal.

If there is no rule preventing it, maybe we could try, and just like the Rusney Castillo situation, they could create a new rule after the fact.

They could make a big show of it . Dombrowski could hold a press conference. "Introducing our new , fifteen million dollar Special Assistant and part time infield coach , Dustin Pedroia . "

Feel bad for him. He wants to play so bad and is having brutal luck with injuries. Sucks seeing this happen to players.

I feel bad for him too. I have held out optimism for Pedroia's return, but sadly, I think I have to let go of that hope.

Pedroia will not doubt go on the IL, and Lin will surely be called up. If nothing else, Lin will shore up the infield defense up the middle.

Pedroia turns 36 in a couple of months. The knee notwithstanding, he is certainly in the twilight of a wonderful career . How about we let Brock Holt step out of his utility role and give him a real run as the second baseman?

Once he gets over his eye thingy, that will likely be the plan.

I hope we don't have to make another deal like the Kinsler one this summer.

I hate to ever give up hope, but sadly, I have to agree.

Maybe he tries another comeback, but we can never count on him for anything going forward.

It would stop me from trying. Maybe this is why I don't have any friends who are corporations.

Hey! "Corporations are people, too!"

But if everyone knows he's done why should we have to keep him on the books when he can't play anymore? Everyone knows he could technically keep rehabbing and picking up his money, but it suits all involved for him to get his money yet not clutter up a ball team he is going to have no part of playing in.

This is assuming he is all together finished, of course.

It's not like he is just not very good and we are looking for ways out. If he is finished but doesn't want to give his cash up it's a simple way out. I don't see it as that unethical if he is finished.

Two words: guaranteed contract.

The Sox are on the hook for it unless Pedroia voluntarily retires. Just like how the Rangers are still paying Prince Fielder...

We get that.

The point was about finding a way to get Pedey the money he is owed, but not have it count against the luxury tax budget.

He agrees to retire like Dempster not Fielder.

We then sign him to what he was previously owed plus fair compensation for being a "special assistant>" to the team.

Again, I'm not sure it's legal, but if it is, we could maybe try to do it.

You've missed the point of my post. I wasn't asking the question you've assumed I was. I know we are on the hook for it. Hence my post.

This 100% also depends on whether or not Pedroia thinks he’s done. I really doubt he has any “quit” in him.

And really, how much of a difference should it make? If Pedroia remains, is it that much of a task for Dombrowski to build a team with $230mill? I’d hardly call it a handicap. Plenty of teams have smaller budgets and also have deadweight contracts...

$13.75M for each of the next two years could make a big difference, if DD is told he has to reset the tax or stay under the mid or max levels.

We might be able to keep JBJ or Porcello for that or Holt and Moreland.

Depends on how much luxury tax Henry is willing to pay.

There is no way the CBA is so poorly written as to allow such a loophole, which has the sole purpose of avoiding luxury tax that is obviously due..

Here is the answer, under Article XXIII Competitive Balance Tax:

G. Other Undertakings

(1) Neither the Parties hereto nor any Club or any Player shall

enter into any agreement, Uniform Player’s Contract or other trans-

action, that includes any terms designed to defeat or circumvent the

intention of the Parties as reflected by this Article XXIII.

It's a pretty sad state of affairs if we're looking forward to keeping Moreland.

I wasn't for signing him in the first place.

Immaterial. The question involved $230mill, which is an approximation of the upper limit where the Sox are now minus Pedroia’s AAV.

If Henry is going to squeeze the budget, then it was unwise to extend Sale and Bogaerts ...

Never wanted Moreland, but I’d welcome him back...

Nah, he’s a solid platoon/late inning replacement guy.

Exactly. Thanks for looking this up.

I do not understand why the rush to activate him!

Just looking at him swing the bat in spring training and you knew he was not right.

We need to move him to the 60 day dL and bring up chavis.

Posted

The 60 day IL isn’t necessary.

Chavis is already on the 40 man roster and the Sox have 2 open spots on it still.
