None of the Sox minor league teams made the playoffs. Today was the last day of the season for them.

Betts has two taters today and Shawaryn has a decent final start of the season. I think he could be a September call up next year,

Hopefully we have a better year next year. Thanks desperate Dave!

I'm surprised no one is talking about Trey Ball.....the outfielder.

333 OPS. What's there to talk about? It was way too late to convert him.

When was Lakins ranked in the top 10? I don't remember this.

Per SP, he's UP 6 spots, not down.

Yes, Lakins went from 19th to 13th...not down but up. My bad.

I fixed it.

What a bust Ball has been. Thanks Ben!

  • Red Sox prospect Trey Ball is moving from the mound to the batter’s box, as Greg Levinsky of the Boston Globe notes on Twitter. The Globe’s Alex Speier recently examined the subject, explaining that the 2013 first-rounder was seen as a two-way prospect as a high-school outfielder. With his pitching career fizzling out — he has struggled in consecutive Double-A seasons, despite repeating the level and converting to a relief role — the 24-year-old Ball will now take a second shot at carving out a MLB career.

Good pick with Beni, though.
I wonder what kind of sophisticated software he used and how many scouting reports he reviewed to convince him to pick the College Player of the Year.

College Player of the Year is near meaningless. If it was what it was, he'd have gone first or second.

It wasn't like Ball was not highly regarded, at the time.

All-in-all, Ben's drafts were about average. His international signings grade as an A to A-, despite Castillo.

His trades were pretty good (Dodger dump, ERod...)

His FA signings were D-, at best.

Did you see the list posted by MVP?

Looks at list... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baseball_America_College_Player_of_the_Year_Award

Yeah, that's pretty much a gimmie pick.

I thought that at the time that Ball was considered a project and by no means a blue chip sure thing.

Is there ever really a "blue chip" HS player?

Anytime you take a HS kid, it's a gamble.

The Phillies took Mark Appel first that year. The Twins took Kohl Stewart 4th. Clint Frazier was 5th. I'm not sure there was anybody that screamed, "Take me!" by the 7th pick.

Aaron Judge was taken 32nd, but I doubt anyone looked at him like a 7th pick.

HS kids are probably not the best use of a high first round pick unless it is Bryce Harper.

How does it look when you look at the entire first round and not the #1 overall pick? ARod and Junior, and those other overall #1 picks were freaks. The fall off after those picks in the first round was tremendous.

I'm pretty sure college beats HS, but maybe the very best might be HS.

Just my guess.

fWAR leaders among position players 2014-2018

1. Mike Trout (High School)

2. Mookie Betts (High School)

3. Jose Altuve (Intl)

4. Josh Donaldson (College)

5. Paul Goldschmidt (College)

6. Giancarlo Stanton (High School)

7. Manny Machado (High School)

8. Freddie Freeman (High School)

9. Anthony Rendon (College)

10. Kris Bryant (College)

11. Joey Votto (College)

12. Anthony Rizzo (High School)

13. Nolen Arenado (High School)

14. Lorenzo Cain (High School)

15. Francisco Lindor (High School)

16. Bryce Harper (High School)

17. Christian Yelich (High School)

18. Buster Posey (College)

19. Justin Turner (College)

20. Matt Carpenter (College)

Some conclusions

If you want a catcher or a corner infielder, largely who cares - 7 of the 11 guys on this list went to college. (Carpenter was drafted as a 3B - though he has played 2B in the majors)

Anybody else, high school was very much dominated. Teams have definitely wanted to get elite athletes as young as possible - and it makes sense.

Pitchers are much more college biased - the physical maturity just matters so much there.

The discussion was about the best use of a first round pick.
