That isn't true, but it isn't far off.

From 2014-2017 (4 seasons), JD Martinez ranks seventh among all qualified hitters in MLB in OPS. His .936 OPS trails only Trout, Votto, Goldschmidt, Stanton, Harper and Big Papi. If you only look at 2015-2017, his OPS is a little higher (.943), but he still trails the same six names. (Apparently Papi was still considered a qualified hitter over that stretch.)

Not second, but still impressive. Especially for a guy who was once released from a last place team while still making minimum wage...

Thanks. Although I "misremembered" about his being 2nd he's still in pretty good company!

I think you might have been thiinking about SLG, where he is second in MLB from 2014-2017, behind only Trout...

Meh. When you include 2016, it's like what the Yankees did to justify shelling out zillions for Ellsbury because of that incredible, never to be approached, let alone repeated, 2011. The Sox are lucky 2018 has happened and they can make a more informed decision about JBJ.

That said, it is always possible he will come around. I just don't think it's a good bet. Right now we are seeing the 2014 JBJ.

Tell me what this means. What are you trying to say here? I hate stats.

I guess I've missed the entire point of this thread then. I thought we were talking about JBJ here. What does Martinez being good have to do with whether or not we should trade JBJ? If we use Martinez to replace JBJ in the outfield, that would be an absolute disaster in every sense of the word.

Then read the thread so you know the flow of the conversation instead of complaining about it. You've been here long enough to know that the conversation ebbs and flows, and topics aren't set in stone.

I was trying to show three things:

1) We have seven players in the top 150 in SLG% on our team. (150/30 teams would give you 5 per team. We have been better, despite our putrid slugging 2017 season.)

2) Some players we passed on, like Moose, have been top sluggers.

3) JMart is pretty damn awesome.

I included top OBP players, because I can. (nah-nah) I think OBP is more important than SLG, and we have 7 in the top 130.

I did not intend to make a point about JBJ being in these top lists, but it apparently ticked off those who tend to look more closely at the what have you done lately numbers.

What about the offensive sense of the word?

(Actually, the bat that would replace JBJ would be Moreland's, and JMart's glove would replace JBJ's.)

Defensively, JBJ is far greater. I think we can all agree on that. Offensively, Moreland is better, but the difference is only marginal, and far less than the difference between the gloves of Martinez and Bradley. Not worth it in my mind. I'm a little sentimental towards JBJ too, but that's not a big factor here. I'm a business major. I shut down my feelings.

JBJ is maybe my favorite player, despite his struggles at the plate.

That being said, Moreland's bat has been very helpful thus far.

I like Moreland too, and these two seasons in Boston have been much better than I thought. Still, I don't like the face value between swapping out Martinez for JBJ on defense and Moreland for JBJ on offense. The defensive loss is still greater than the offensive gain.

If JBJ is going to actually play and not be relegated to a late inning defensive replacement type, he is going to have to hit just a little bit. He has been hitting a lot less than a little bit. I would never suggest that Martinez replace him in the outfield. We all know how that goes over here. but if JBJ plays and continues to struggle, Cora will have to explore other possibilities to replace him in the outfield even if it is on a part time basis. I like the rotation concept being used if JBJ hits (at all). I'm sorry but I don't care how well he fields his position, if he continues to be an automatic out then he represents a liability for this team going forward. I like JBJ as much as anyone here. I've followed his career since he arrived in Portland but really?

Since last year's All-Star Break, JBJ is said to have . . . .

The mlb's League leading WORST OPS?

It sure feels like it,

I agree and always have felt JBJ's defense outweighs any gain we'd get on offense.

I did think it was a good idea to give him a couple days off, and I hope he improves.

His great defense cannot support a .400 OPS. There are other great defensive OF'ers kicking around that can hit .550 to .600.

The difference on offense might be marginal if Jackie was putting up his normal numbers. But he is not doing that , not even remotely close. I do expect him to pick up the pace soon , but no defense can justify the lack of production that we have been seeing so far this year.

The Mendoza line (c. .215) was supposed to apply to ALL major league pos. players. But, of course, the figure is based on a full season.

Right now there are a number of decent players around the league hitting below it. If Bradley is hitting below .200 at the All Star Break, it is likely he will end up below Mendoza at the season's end. Which wd of course cause a lot more buzz than what's happening right now.

It's too bad that he's had several little corrections that have helped (fanfare in press) but has always retreated to his former self.

Well put. I want to come back to this in a few weeks after we have seen his response to this prolonged time off.

Man if we can get a good defensive cf who is decent and consistent at the plate, imagine how good this lineup can be. JBJ is just brutal, i'm glad other fans are starting to come around to the fact that he sucks.
