The owners did not get rich by making illogical moves.

Salary considerations aside I'd love to see what Castillo can do as the 4th OF. I can't imagine it would be much worse than Martinez.

Of course in the real world salary considerations exist and once the Sox bring him up there's no sending him back down as far as salary goes. They have to continue to pay him no matter where he is.

Whose idea was that anyway? It looks like the players got hosed on that one.

How did Rusney get hosed? He's getting paid no matter what.

Reasons Kimbrel needs to be re-signed:

1. he's a really good closer

2. there is no other good backup option if he walks

3. he seems like a nice guy and has dealt with Boston media and fans without issue

4. large red beard

I've wondered that too. It's such a strange and rare situation, they probably never thought of it, or at least never addressed it, since there are certainly many details of the CBA that prevent clubs from 'parking' players in the minors or punishing veterans by sending them down.

Honestly, MLBPA has screwed themselves that past few CBA's. I hope the nonsense of the last offseason convinces them to bargain a little harder next time.

He may be getting hosed as far as a major league baseball career is concerned.

His next contract isn't coming until he's 33. I'm not sure he'd be getting a big deal then anyway.

I think there's a chance he pops up the end of next year and then is on a MLB team in 2020. He could force their hand through his play, but he has yet to do that.

Yes but does he have a tat on his chest?:P

I would normally feel bad for a guy stuck in Pawtucket seemingly until his career is over.

But he did get a huge contract so he can buy his supercars and other toys.

Unless he is a super dope, he should be set for life along with his family, I imagine.

From what I have seen ( I see him play about 6 games each year living in the RI market ) he is no worse than Benni in left. He can make hard contact but not enough of it.

Nope, my heart pumps piss for the guy. If he is so unhappy ( and no one has said that he is unhappy ) he could just quit and try to catch on elsewhere.

I was very vocal about being against signing this guy from the moment it was being considered. The Sox brass f***ed this one up from the get go.

f*** 'em all.

If getting paid is the only criteria then he's fine... I guess. IMO he'd like to not only get paid but be on a MLB roster.

Yeah, I think almost anyone would accept Castillos contract to play minor league baseball. 7 years of your life for $72 million? Sign me up. Even if you are miserable in the minors, you are set for life unless you are an absolute moron.

Yup....Apparently, MLBPA could not even make a decent collusion case out of this past off season. That's how tilted this current CBA appears to be.

I love Kimbrel. Let me be clear that I will be very happy if the Sox re-sign him. I just think it would be a bad idea contractually.

If he was good enough he’d by up

I agree.

Our budget is not unlimited. If we sign Kimbrel we lose elsewhere.

We both know that's not true. The only thing keeping him in Pawtucket is his salary.

Given what happened with many of this year's FAs its entirely possible that Kimbrel will be an affordable commodity.

You mean when ....

Wade Davis got $52M/3

Bryan Shaw got $27M/3

B Morrow got $22M/2

Greg Holland got $11M/1 (late)

If he was good enough to beat out JBJ/Mookie/JD/Beni, he'd be up. He's not. He's a bench player at best.

Why would one loss change my mind? If Mookie has a bad game, should they DFA him? Dumb.

thanks.

I guess we'll disagree on that. IMO JH doesn't want to make a 3year/$35M commitment to a #4 outfielder who may push him into the "nuclear option" penalties or keep the team from improving for the next two years. If he were making the ML minimum he'd be up now.

On this team, he'd be the 5th OFer.

I think you're both right here.

Castillo's salary would have very serious luxury tax implications, and Dombrowski went to the see Castillo's audition and reportedly left with the impression Rusney was a fourth outfielder.

I see Castillo as a better version of Jarrod Dyson. Dyson received a 2 yr $7.5mill contract this past off-season. Castillo is owed $23mill for the same two seasons, and assuming he doesn't opt out after 2019 (an extremely slim chance), another $14mill for 2020. So he will likely get $30mill more than Dyson with only one season more of control.

He might be better than Dyson, but not THAT much better...
