We face a lefty tonight in Happ that has given us trouble (who hasn't). We need to get it going so I suggest as I have in the past, that we shake up the lineup. I know Kimmi has provided information that says the lineup is unimportant, so why not shake things up and send a message to the guys that they need to get it going. First of all, despite his weak showing for quite a while, we go nowhere in the playoffs unless Mookie starts to hit. I look for him to pull the ball more and be more aggressive early in the count. I would move him out of the rally killing position and put him up 1st so that if he does get on we can use his speed. I don't know if they will play Pedey two days in a row but if he can we need him against a lefty.

My idea of the lineup is as follows:

Betts Rf

Pedey 2nd

Beni LF

Nunez DH

Hanley 1st

Devers 3rd

Vaz C

JBJ CF

Marrero SS

I hate to leaves Moreland out so hope he can get in as a PH. We would 4 good hitters in to lead off with a power hitter who needs to deliver. I want Beni to pull the ball more .Going off field or directly to center is not whereeither Beni or Betts should live. Putting Hanley back up is a gamble but no worse than having Betts in a key slot hitting the way he is. Maybe he can respond. He also has to swing with a 2 strike count and a pitch over the plate.

Farrell has the B line up going tonight:

Nuñez 3B

Betts RF

Benintendi CF

Ramirez DH

Travis 1B

Bogaerts SS

Young LF

Vazquez C

Marrero 2B

Meh. The last time against lefty Happ the A lineup got 1 run in 6 innings.

I had hoped Pedey would be available. Cross your fingers with this lineup. Defensively we are giving up a little as well. Four question marks in the lineup.

Bad figures for us. Have to look up Cleveland for comparison. We may have to play them if we can hang on.

Again, let me ask, this team has hitting? Worst, most infuriatingly inconsistent hitting Sox team I've ever seen. How many times have I seen this team have a runner at second, or runners at first and second and no one out, and I KNOW they are NOT going to score. Pop up and two strike outs later, on to the next inning.

In light of how poorly this team was doing before this stretch, I guess it's not so unreal.

Personally, I've been expecting this team to bust out any minute now for months and months. I think that is what shocks me. We seem to be getting worse.

I realize my expectations might have been bloated, but this is pretty bad what we are seeing now.

We overvalued Betts and Xander. We were ready to commit $55M to these two one hit wonders. DD will make another big splash this off season, and he needs to.

Betts was at .876 on July 3rd. He's really only had 2 bad months, but man-o-man, they were bad months:

.695 July

.658 August

September does not look any better.

I'm hoping he turns it around, but how long can you keep on hoping?

I've liked Sam Travis for some time now but I don't think that another singles hitter at first base is going to do us any good. We need bigger bats. You have to have some people who can produce with big hits. You just can't rely on dinging and donging if you want to win big. If your pitching is out of this world good, well then maybe - ours isn't. It has nothing to do with whether people enjoy big hitters as opposed to little hitters or not. It has everything to do with what it takes to win.

Betts has not hit a HR since August 3rd.

He seldom pulls the ball, perhaps because they pitch him mainly outside. Lots of pop ups, lots of weakly hit ground balls and balls hit to right and center stay in the park. His one well hit ball last night went to left. That is where he has some power.

I would release Chris Young and give Brentz a shot. Young's performance against lefties this year is a sick joke. 184/297/264 with 1 HR and 4 RBI - unbelievable.

I very much agree. Based on what Young has done, i don't see it as being much of a gamble regardless of how a Brentz experiment might work out. Personally, I would not write off what Barfield has done this year as simply being AAAA calibre either.

@nickcafardo

Dave Dombrowski said IL HR champ Bryce Brentz willl not get callup from Pawtucket. Brentz hit 31 HR but no 40-man roster spot available.

I'm with you, Bell. Brentz should be up here. Saying that there's no room on the 40 man roster is laughable. This organization clearly doesn't see anything in him. I just don't get it.

It is amazing: in the first game against the Blue Jays, and in the game against Sabathia, C.Young is in the lineup and does nothing. Sabathia threw Young a cookie right down the middle, and Young grounded out to 3b. Young hasn't done anything all year, he is below replacement level, and yet the Red Sox keep trotting him out there. They should have released him at the trade deadline and either promoted Brentz or traded for someone who can hit. I was calling for this at the trade deadline.

In the worst scenario, I figured they wouldn't give Young too many at-bats in September--and yet he was in the lineup last night. . . .

I beat up on FO for being a little slow on promoting Devers, but I could at least talk myself into it. With Brentz, it just makes zero sense here. There's too much upside. Even if he just wins one extra game with a pinch hit, it's worth it to get rid of a AAAA reliever wasted on the 40 man roster.

I hope Brentz gets a real chance somewhere next year (I wish it was in BOS, but don't think it will be).

Young has had lost seasons before. When he was with the Mets, he was atrocious, and the Mets offense needed help. I think they dropped him that August. The Red Sox have been patient to a fault with Young. It's just not his year and we don't have the time to trot him out there to get the ANs that he needs to work it out. Anytime we face a lefty, we are at a disadvantage offensively and defensively if Bradley and Moreland are on the bench.

Since he's a FA after this season, it makes no sense to suffer through a year long drought just because you like a guy.

Wonder will never cease: There's no Sox hitters in the first 32 best averages in the Am League. There's been years when we had 5 of the top 10 deep into the season--and not just one or two seasons but several.

BA and HRs.

Here are the HRs trends by some of our best hitters.

Betts: 5> 18> 31> 18

HRam: 13> 19> 30> 22

JBJ: 10> 26> 14

Bogey: 7> 21> 8

Pedey 12> 15> 6

For these 5 hitters our HRs from 2016 to 2017 went from...

123 to 68.

We're on pace for about 75-80.
