The pitcher-catcher relationship is one of the intangibles that I feel most strongly, if not the strongest, about.

I have said many times that what we get from our catchers offensively is gravy.

#BringBackVaritek

Once again, we are in 100% agreement.

Catcher's have an enormous influence over the success and failure of the pitchers they catch. It cannot be captured by stats or data, but I am convinced it is a vital aspect of a team's success.

My tendency is to advocate going with the hot bats at the current time. Just because Bogey has roughly a 750 ops for the year doesn't mean he is doing that in the second half split. In fact, his performance every year of his career but one had a worse performance in the second half. This year his injury hampered him but it appears to be more than that, so why bat him 5th in the lineup tonight following another underperforming hitter in Betts. Believe me when I say I would love for both of them to turn it around but evidence indicates they are off right now. Both taking early strikes and swinging at balls out of the zone. If they both act as rally killers tonight it won't help us. I don't understand JFs thinking.

I prefer to group hitters who at least make solid contact so they can get more runs across the plate. Now Young is being used to take Moreland out of the second game in a row when he has been one of our hottest hitters. Young has been pathetic of late and consistently so. Quoting when he has done in the past doesn't mean much when you have to win a game tonight.

Heres hoping that this lineup idea will work but I am hiighly skeptical and also believe lineups do matter.

Bogaerts is still dealing with the hand injury. He needs a break of several games. Hopefully Farrell will give him that break when Pedroia returns and the rosters expand.

I am just wondering if any of you have seen a noticeable difference in production one way or another with all of the line up tweaks Farrell has used.

Is he dealing with a hand issue, or is just having trouble recognizing and hitting sliders?

It seems the sliders are more of a recent thing. He was slapping the ball the other away. He wasn't hitting for any power either. Pitchers started that krytonite pitch to him. He stopped hitting anything.

Bogaerts is one of many Sox players who is doing nothing at the plate. His looking at so many called third strikes has nothing to do with his hand. He use to take many of those pitches to right field. He seems lost at times. Farrell has him hitting fifth. C Young is giving the Sox nothing. It's telling when you have your DH hitting eighth. With September call ups Travis should get all of his ABs. when is the last time Hanley got a two out hit? There is a reason why he has so few RBIs. I'm getting tired of his act. He is getting paid big dollars to drive in runs from the middle of the order and he is not getting it done. I think aloof Mookie's problems are he has no one that gives any protection in the line up. The team the Sox puts on the field has no 4-5-6 hitters.

He shoulders a lot of the responsibility for the loss tonight. The box score is deceiving.

His OF play was blah too.

Devers is the only one with any semblance of a 3-6 slot hitter make-up. We used to be able to say Betts did too.

Good morning. Just stopped by to see if anyone can help me understand whey we have a .232 hitter batting leadoff.

Thanks

Yeah, even the .293 (.313 career) OBP is unappealing.

Maybe it is because everyone is slumping and he had an 2nd half OBP of over .350 before last night.

Just reaching for straws--like JF seems to be doing.

Moon's got it right, who are you going to put there? Yeah, you can move Nunez up. But Farrell still has to slot a bunch of guys who aren't hitting and haven't since the all-star break.

Second half slash lines per Baseball Reference:

Benintendi .276/.367/.790

Betts .240/.322/.652

Ramirez .221/.302/.731

Bogaerts .205/.279/.587

Moreland .256/.321/.785

Benintendi and Moreland are roughly the same as the first half, and it could be said both are around what we probably could have expected. The other 3? A different story. Bogaerts needs to be benched. Now. He is contributing nothing.

The only two guys hitting right now are Beni and Moreland- neither is a good lead-off hitter or clean-up hitter.

1. DFA Owens, add Brentz to the 40 man and call him up.

2. Put Price on the 60 Day DL, put him under the knife now and add Butler. Call him up.

3. Call up Smith, Travis, Lin, Maddox, Beeks and Marrero.

Shake things up for a few games...

Line-up vs RHPs

1. Nunez DH

2. Pedey 2B

3. Beni LF

4. Devers 3B

,,.and ran into 2 outs

Will you lay off of that one. He did try to extend to a double on one. My view is with a 3 and 2 count and Betts up he was sent and it made sense. Avoid the double play or score on a hit. What didn't make sense is that Betts took a called third strike under those circumstances. Quit trying to blame Beni, who was one of our lone bright spots last night, even hitting a tough lefty when some of our rightys could not.

The caught stealing looked very much like a botched hit and run.

So far the field player call ups are Swihart and Travis. I don't buy that Nunez can play SS to give Bogey are rest. I would either have Lin (preference) or Marrero there while Bogey gets some time off.

In general I agree with your lineup against RHP. The problem is to get Nunez into the lineup while not accepting the liability of his field play. That really leaves him as the DH but does leave our one true power bat out of the lineup as a PH only. From what I have heard Brentz is now slumping (something like 2 for the last 20 against AAApitching). Doesn't sound good to me and so far he wasn't called up. Did you check to see if he got transferred to the 40 man roster before Sept 1st? I put Nunez in as DH and Marrero/or Lin at SS and leave Bogey out for at least a week.

I checked the 40 man roster and Brentz is not on it. My reading is that it means he cannot be brought up.

3-2 I doubt it was a hit and run, but Betts, as the great Tiger announcer Ernie Harwell used to put it, "stood there like a house at the side of the road". It was a pitch you have to at least offer at.

If not a hit and run, it was probably that Farrell decided to move the runner on 3-2. I am trying to give the kid an excuse. If he did it on his own, he owns it and he got a lousy jump and gave away a second out on the bases. I prefer to think that Farrell sent him. Edited by a700hitter

OH, I agree Farrell sent him, and I had no issue with him doing so The onus was on Betts to at least attempt to put the ball in play. It's not like it was one of those 3 inches outside called strikes Sabathia got a few times last night.

I would not have sent him. Betts has been K'ing a lot lately.

I have zero confidence in Bogaerts right now.

I am wondering what has happened to the concept of protecting the plate. Maybe it's my imagination, but they seem to swing at pitches that aren't anywhere near the plate for strike 3, and they get caught looking at strike 3 on close pitches. Maybe some of those were actually balls, but they are close enough that the hitters have to protect. And I'm not just talking about Bogaerts.

Our biggest baserunning weakness is hitting into DPs. It was a good call to send the runner on a 3-2 count. The batter did not do his job of protecting both the plate and the runner in that situation.

Mookie is not a big DP guy.
