It’s a bargain for the Sox IF Crochet stays relatively healthy. Guy is not elite but a very solid number one in any rotation.

The longest pitcher signing since Price in 2016 (7 years.)

This is a good sign that the cycle in spending is shifting upside.

$170M/7 Crochet

$120M/3 Bregman

$21M/1 Buehler

$18.3M/2 Sandoval

$10.8M/1 Chapman

One hell of a winter!

This, after  $314M/13 Devers, $39M/2 Gio and $10M/2 Hendriks, last winter.

If you figure Crochet would have gotten $20M in his final arb year, the deal is really like $150M/5, or $30M x 5.

That seems reasonable to me, despite his lack of workload under his belt.

Loving Breslow's moves. I'd have preferred there wasn't the player option in there, but when you compare it to above - love it.

Crochett looked pretty good on opening day. As long as he stays relatively healthy for the remainder of the contract this looks like a good deal to lock in a top of the rotation pitcher. I feel this is a good long term move for the Red Sox.

Except it's not, it would be a 140/5 deal if he opts out after 30' 168/6 if he does not. The deal starts in 2026.

Counting this year Crochet will be here for 6-7 years and will pitch during his age 26/27/28/29/30/31 seasons.  They're getting a prime pitcher, in their prime.

You almost hope it's 6 years.  Because if it's 7 something may have gone wrong.

He only got 3.8M this year so there's no way he's going up to 20M this offseason in ARB. That's not how it works.

Good stuff!

Needed some good news before they headed back to Boston. Now they need extensions for Mayer and Campbell.

If things work out it will be a least 6 yrs of control.

You almost kind of hope its only 6 years (counting this year) right?

If he doesn't opt out at the age of 31, you have to think something went very wrong in 2028/2029.

Old Red said "at least 6 years" so that leaves open to a future extension maybe?

I think $140/5 was what I projected. I went back to look, but could not find it.

They bought out his final arb year (2026.) My point was about factoring that into the final amount.

I think he meant this year plus 5-6 years= 6-7 total.

This deal seems totally reasonable for both sides.  He can opt out after 2030, so it added 4 years of guaranteed control.

If he ops out after 2030 that would be a total of 6 yrs under control, so you were right on.

You know it's a good deal when you don't see anyone complaining about it.

So great job, Brez.  Now can you please get some of these guys to start hitting?

If Crochet wins the Cy Young, there's a clause that allows Giolito to opt out.

Just in from NBC Sports Boston blabbing heads, explaining the Red Sox' offensive offense: Raffy originally hurt his shoulder in Spring Training 2024 hitting weighted baseballs slipped into pitching machines by Driveline coaches hired by Breslow.

Nerd scandal!

I'm just relieved it got done.

Me, too.

The price seems high, but in these times, I think it's reasonable.

Nice to get a little insurance.

Yeah, I think it's a pretty big deal.

So if the injury is timed just right, then we essentially get two years of service for one missed year, the second year at a discount.

So if he has not season injury in 2029, misses April, May, June and July, and comes back to pitch in the world series, he'll have to pitch 2030-2032?

Not that I'm hoping for it.
