Common sense, look how he reacted and what he said.  His reaction was clear cut and dry that of someone who was shocked and confused.  I think his reaction was based more on that rather than him being a baby or unreasonable.

If you stubbornly want something less anecdotal because you're sold on holding Raffy to the fire consider this:

Up until just a week ago the Sox were quoted saying Bregman would play 2nd base.

It's blatantly obvious they hadn't told him yet he wouldn't be playing 3B.

If you go by people that watched the full interview session and listened to what the interpreter was telling Raffy, I think you have it a bit off. His reaction was someone who was deeply annoyed with the reporters. He wasn't combative early on. The translator asked him "what position do you wish to play" over and over again. He just said he wasn't just going to change his position right now and that he believes he's a 3b. He never said he wouldn't play anywhere else in the future. He was asked the same phrasing by the translator numerous times about 3b. That's why he got so heated. He had to answer the same friggin question over and over again and then had someone question him about his weight. Of course he's going to be a little upset after that.

Would the Devers reaction be different, if he just signed with an Astros that still had Bregman on the roster?

(Assuming there was no contract discussions over his pending position.)

I can't help but think of ARod saying Jeter, a worse defender, can play SS over him- the better defender.

Now, we see the better defender, Bregman, say I'll play where they tell me to play.

I'm hoping this isn't nearly as big an issue as it is being made out to be, here.

Sometimes, things are lost in translation, and certain phrases can be taken out of context. My wife is from Mexico, and I lived there for 4 years. I notice people often say "I won't do ____," and they mean, "If it was up to me, I would not do ____," and not that they would refuse to do it, if told to be their boss (or wife...lol.)

I'm not saying this was the case, here. Devers clearly does not want to move positions, but the way his answers came across, might not be a totally accurate meaning for whathe thinks, or more importantly will think or do, going forward.

That communication issue is on management -if that’s what happened. But it changes nothing as regards the best position in the field for both players. Bregman at 3rd where he won a GG and Devers at 1st (or DH). That also leaves room for Campbell when he is ready.
The team needs to focus more on winning games than massaging someone’s ego.

It’s likely going to work out just fine.
If Devers showed up significantly overweight that’s a problem. He’s paid enough to show up in shape.

You legitimately think Casas believes Raffy is the best 3b in the league and should stay there for 10 years?

I legitimately wouldn’t even try to get into Casas mind.

Ya'll are missing the point.

Ya'll are 100% right but for all the wrong reasons.

It's not about Devers doing what's best for the team, by all accounts he probably will.  Just because he should move off of 3B doesn't mean he's not allowed to be disappointed he has to do so.  He loves playing, and you should try to imagine the heartbreak he must have to have to switch.

Now imagine being told this in private, getting angry, getting over it, then going out and playing ball and being a great DH.  But instead he finds out in public and doesn't have that chance to grieve privately.  It was an unnecessary shock.  I don't think Raffy is good enough to play 3B, but I'm happy he cares enough to be pissed he's moving off of it.  I feel bad he has to live in a world where people can't see past the forest for the trees and see what really happened yesterday.

This might be the biggest mountain ever made of a mole hill.

Call me back if he refuses to take batting practice next week and he's still talking about staying at 3B.

I think my statements and what he said are easily consolidated.

If no one told him he's moving off of third, then in his head he's still playing third.  Why would he tell a stranger he's moving off of the position he's been told he's playing when his boss hasn't told him he's not playing third yet.

In that situation you have to either feel blindsided by your boss or confused why a stranger is saying you were just demoted.  So yes, he was confused and shocked built largely on the media hammering a question he didn't fully understand because of when and where it was coming from.

To me it's clear there's a conversation between him and the team that needs to happen that has NOT happened.

If he's fat and out of shape, Cora has a good excuse to banish him to DH.

Fact is, we don’t know if the switch was discussed with him before the interview or not. If it was discussed and he’s publicly stonewalling it, that’s a mistake on his part. “ No comment” would have been better in that case. If this wasn’t discussed earlier then he has every right to be pissed-then calmly agree to do what’s best for the team.

The person who brought up his weight was Shaughnessy. FCHB.

This has been debated over and over again.  We are running in circles.

much like reporters asking Raffy the same question over and over and over again.

Cora gave a long ahh when asked about Raffy’s condition, and finally said he’s behind on his conditioning, so read into that whatever you want outside of him being in A1 condition.

Let it be known.  Players must suck up to reporters and aren’t allowed to be frustrated when asked the same question ten times in a row.

all hail the media. Love and trust to the Boston sports media.  Especially the all faithful and honest Shaughnessy!!!!

Casas was probably offered the same $40 million that Bregman got.

Triston's maybe just bitter because the front office tried to extend him for that amount spread over the next 14 seasons.

Plus, of course Casas wants Raffy to stay at 3B; he doesn't want anyone creeping across the infield closer to 1B.

Yeah, putting him on the bench would certainly teach him a valuable lesson. His job is to play baseball wherever the manager tells him to play to the best of his ability. Pouting is not an option. He gets WAY too much money for that BS.

Have you ever known anyone in your work, in politics, or in sports, who "learned a valuable lesson" by being punished or being subjected to public humiliation? Because I have not, and i believe you and I have been around about the same number of decades.

It's too bad the mood of Sox nation went from pretty upbeat over the Bregman, Crochet and other additions to this.

At this point there has been plenty of smoke, but no fire. To me NOTHING unexpected has happened yet, and the start of the season is still over a month away.

Of course I have. Many times, including personally. There are usually consequences for screwing up in life.

True. I was talking about the mood of the posters on this site.

I'm not worried about Devers or Bregman, as of now. It will work itself out.

If Devers ends up at third base, you'll be hearing more, from me.

Well the mood on this site is pretty much what’s out, and about in other places, but like I said except for some words here, and there no actions have taken place yet.

The actions have been Bregman working out at 3B and 2B.

Devers at 3B and no 1B.

There is a long way to go to opening day. I feel pretty confident the drama will not increase, but if it does, we'll deal with it, then.

To me, the best choice for the better team on the field is obvious. I hope other factors don't interfere with that.

Yes I know those things have happened, but I meant no actions on who is playing where have been decided yet.

Casas has obviously gone out to bat for Devers then let his mouth run off with him. I find him a very difficult person to like. Basing it on how many times Cortillo and McAdams have said we've tried to trade him this off season, I'd guess there's a few in the FO that feel the same say.
