Granted the back end needs a new arm, but Pivetta can cover those situations where Cora needs to stop the bleeding in the 3rd-4th-5th-6th , you know, like when Pivetta pitched in Colorado this week.

I'm guessing Criswell will be moved to the BP. Pivetta is the only SOX starter who's proven to have the stamina to pitch a complete season.

Tha main question I have regarding Paxton is will he be able to finish the season?

That was 1 game. The backend of the BP gave up 3 leads late, which led to 3 losses this past week, and at this very moment the backend of the BP is a BIG problem.

Pivetta delivered 6 shutout innings against the NL West leading Dodgers in his start before that one. I take it that’s forgotten not

Eflin to the Orioles. Things are heating up.

So, the whole no trades to division foes was not true.

Big move by the O's.

Word was that Eflin chose TBR over BOS, because he lives near Tampa. Oh, well!

In Pivetta’s last 48.2 innings, which covers June, and July he has given up 48 hits, and 26 ER. Those aren’t good numbers no matter how you slice em, and dice em. I think the only reason he’s still in the rotation is, because there aren’t many other options. Whether Cora pulls him, or not is the question, which I’m guessing he won’t.

Seattle is taking the fork in the road!!!

Although I think that path will be more common, since the true sellers are so few…

Also pretty heavily influenced by one bad outing in Coors Field. Before that, he had a 3.72 ERA/3.12 FIP with a .650 OPSA in that stretch…

Eflin is controlled through 2025.

BAL made a smart move.

There are a few others with one more year. Maybe we make a try for one of them.

Tampa is selling, and Yandy Diaz might be a good fit to acquire as a right-handed hitting first base/DH middle-of-the-order guy.

Diaz turns 33 soon, and is coming off the restricted list attending to a family matter. He's under contract through next year, with a team option for 2026. He may not cost that much in prospect capital, but did hit .330 last year to win the AL batting title...

... the Rays are always on the look-out for middle infield prospects they can move all around the field.

The Rays have also shown a willingness to trade to teams in their own division.

I wish we had gotten Eflin, but there seems like there are a few 1.3 year-remaining pitchers on the block, and maybe we shock the nation by trading for a longer controlled TOTR SP'er or a couple of quality RP'ers.

As we near the deadline at 6pm on July 30th, the list of sure sellers has not really grown. The list of buyers and tire-kickers is probably the longest in MLB history, which could mean the auctions get heated and expensive. So far, it does not seem like teams are giving up the world for some decent players.

The sellers:

CWS:

Crochet (2 arbs remaining) might be the biggest target next to Skubal.

Fedde (1 more year at $7.5M) is aging but a low risk, at that cost.

Roberts Jr. ($15M in '25 w 2 option years at $20M w $2M buyouts) He is a RHB, but we seem set in the OF for many years to come.

DeJong (FA to be) costs only about $600K but may not be an upgrade

OAK

Mason Miller (prearb) just went on the IL. He could replace jansen, next year, but will be very costly and I'm not sure about his status for the rest of '24.

Brent Rooker (3 arbs left) is having a great year and is a RHB. We don't really need a DH, since we have Yoshida and a Ref/Valdez platoon would be fine, too.

MIA

Tanner Scott (FA) is getting a lot of attention

COL

Cal Quantrill & Austin Gomber both have 1 arb year left, but may not be much of an upgrade.

Brenton Doyle (prearb) is a RHB CF'er who might be a nice swap for one of our LHB prospects or Abreu plus prospects.

Ezequiel Tovar (RHB SS) is locked up at $63.5M/7 starting this year. I doubt he is on the block.

TBR (has already been selling)

Taj Bradley is not on the block.

Zack Littell (1 arb)

Pete Fairbanks ($3.7M in '25 w $7M option for '26 ($1M buyout)

Jason Adam (2 arbs) RP

Kevin Kelly (prearb) RP

Yandy Diaz ($10M w club option for '26) is a RHB corner IF'er who turns 33, soon

TOR

Bassitt ($22M for '25) might be too costly for JH, but just 1 year left.

Gausman ($22M x 2 more years) His contract might lessen the return needed.

Berrios ($18.7M AAV through '28) might be more of a "dump."

Kikuchi (FA) Owed about $4M and may be affordable

Trevor Richards (FA) RP'er doing okay

Chad Green ($10.5M in '25) is having a good year, but likely too expensive for JH.

Guerrero (1 big arb year left) RHB at 1B/DH (not really a fit for '25)

J Turner (FA) RHB at 1B/3B (2B in a pinch) and likes Boston

LAA

T Anderson ($13M in '25) LHP might be one of our best options

Carlos Estevez (FA) very good RP

H Strickland (prearb) not likely available

Luis Garica (FA) Might be affordable

Rengifo is not someone I want, and Pillar might be a RHB fix, but we are loaded at OF.

DET

Skubal (2 arbs left!!!) LHP might be the top prize available

Flaherty (FA) maybe the best rental out there

Tyler Holton (prearb) LHRP

Shelby Miller (owed $1M for '24 with $4.25M option for '25) RP

Jason Foley (3 arbs) RP

Wil Vest (3 arbs) RP

Mark Canha RHB I'm not interested in

SFG

Jordan Hicks ($12M x 3 more years) SP Not much of an upgrade, but he eats innings

Ryan Walker RP (prearb)

Tyler Rogers RP (1 arb)

Taylor Rogers ($12M in '25 might be worth it) LHRP

(Chapman at 1B does not seem like an option)

Maybe?

The issue I see with this team is where they would add a RH bat.

1b? Consindeting the Sox are chasing the postseason with a platoon of Dominic Smith and Romy Gonzalez, they have plenty of room to upgrade.

2b? Hamilton is basically league average. Westbrook seems like a career minor leaguer living his dream. If the Sox get a 1b, Romy can take the weak side of the platoon. Detroit’s Andy Ibanez is a great option, as he has quietly become one of the best bats vs LHP in all of MLB.

SS? Rafaela isn’t a good SS. He’s fringey there with the glove. But getting a RHH SS who can field as well seems like a tall order.

DH? Masatska is hitting RHP, but is weak vs LHP. Someone like Mark Canha would be a good compliment.

RF? A platoon bat for Abreu (who isn’t likely going anywhere) could push Refsnyder to a DH platoon.

That’s 5 possible positions. I suspect 1b and/or 2b would be the best candidates, assuming they all fit on the roster. But right now we’re chasing the postseason with David Hamilton, Dominic Smith, Romy Gonzalez and Jamie Westbrook manning those positions. Who had THAT on preseason bingo?

We have a platoon for Abreu: Ref (LF) and O'Neill to RF.

We have a platoon for Yoshida (Refsyner, who is better than Canha and Rengifo.

A RHB at 1B makes sense, but only as a rental, and Romy is okay as a platoon with Smith, for now. If Casas returns, we don't need a 1Bman.

That leaves... SS (or 2B)

If we get a RHB for SS or 2B, Rafaela moves to CF FT, and we have to play Ref at DH or LF. I prefer SS, as our defense and depth is lacking there. A DHam-Romy platoon at 2B is more than decent.

Would anyone give up ...

Anthony & Campbell or Mayer & Teel plus 1-2 from Valdez, Lugo, Paulino, Castro, Jordan or Wikelman

for

Skubal and Shelby Miller?

How about adding Fitts to CWS for Crochet & Fedde?

Regarding SS and 2B-- the Red Sox have a RHH hitting good field Ss and a potential 2bman ( give it time) all under contract and multi-year control. Alas , their ability is to no avail.

Let's assume that miracle of miracles, Grissom and Story actually play a full season ( 140 games) next year. Mayer on hold then, although it might be better to play him at 2B or swap with Story and let Grissom be the bench guy with Hamilton. The OF slots are already crowded with Duran, Rafaela and Abreu, Anthony on hold. Yoshi is strictly a DH. O'Neill is likely not re-signed, but that may not be true , say $6Million to re-up.. The team has a $2M option of Refsnyder for '25. That would seem to be cheap insurance vs O'Neill. Mc Guire was valuable when he hit, not so much now. Give Teel another half season at WooSox, then decide between him and McGuire. Presumes Wong never gets injured.

I'd say Anthony and Campbell, keep Mayer and Teel.

I'd choose those two, as well.

I do think we could see Mayer at SS and Story at 2B. despite Story's grat D at SS.

I think you keep the legit catching prospect, since they are very hard to find. If Wong keep up near .800 offense, we could always trade a catcher or move Wong to 2B/1B/DH and back-up catcher.

Mayer's D is light years better than Campbell, and he is a SS, while Campbell is likely a LF'er who might be okay at 2B.

I'd prefer a pitcher with 3 or more years of control, but 2.3 years from Skubal gives us 3 shots at a ring, and that is a long enough window, to me.

Besides, our farm would still be decent without Anthony and Campbell.

I do think we need to replace or return O'Neill, and it might cost $8M+, not $6M.

Abreu should not start vs LHPs. Ref can play in 2025, and maybe by 2026 Yorke or Lugo can play LF. (Bleis, Jh Garcia and Cespedes might be ready in '27.)

We need to make a major move. Maybe we wait until winter and go for a 3 year guy, but I'd kick the tires, hard, this deadline. I'm not sure what team can offer more than Anthony, Campbell and a couple mid levels for Skubal.

It never crossed my mind, either, but it makes sense. Wong can't catch 140 games, and McGuire has been under .450 for 2 months.

He's a rental, so he should not be too costly.
