"Go to Woo" is the most-dreaded phrase in the clubhouse for the not-blowing-bubble guys (bubble guys who really don't want to blow).

The cool thing about Worcester is that it's like being in gloomy Pawtucket, but without having downtown Providence next door.

I said it earlier.

RF in a platoon with Abreu

IDK, Abreu did have a career reverse split through 2021! What if that continued?!?!

My goal is to stop that in its tracks!!

Having lived in Worcester, I can tell you there is nothing cool about it…

I think that's what mvp 78 just said. The "cool" part was ironic.

It’s not far from cool places.

I think it's better when you like the place where you live. I've lived in a bunch of places and fortunately liked most of them. Tabuk, not so much.

I don't even remember Kike at second base (where Cora called him the best in baseball, when he signed)... probably because he was so good in center in '21.

Of the others on the list, Story was the best on D, but the guy who made the biggest impact -- as an acquisition to bolster the line-up -- had to be Iglesias. He was ineligible for the '21 postseason, but stuck around cheering like a player-coach (like Pedroia in '18)... some posters pointed out Joe Churches lost a step, but he's still solid -- and learned how to hit in his 30s:

'21 Boston .356/.915

'22 Colorado .292/.708

'24 Mets .338/.852

How dumb of us to suggest re-signing him, when there were so many other worse choices for our CBOs to recycle through...

I like that. Aces.

But I think Joseph Churches is more accurate.

Learning to hit in his 30's is ignoring the full season total for 2021: 701 OPS. He only had 64 PA's with BOS that year.

The only reason I'd not bring him back is he isn't really a SS anymore and that's where he had the most value. -2 OAA, 6th percentile arm strength. If they are just finding another 2B/3B type, I think they can do better.

@MattCouture5

Justin Turner really is the perfect add for this Red Sox team

1) will likely be dirt cheap via trade and could likely get the Blue Jays to eat a chunk of his remaining salary too

2) Fits a need of an upgraded right handed bat that can play 1B

3) Red Sox fans love him and he loves Boston. Great locker room guy. Good leader.

4) Playoff experience. Clutch hitter

812 OPS vs LHP this year too.

Kiké in 21: 45 starts at 2b, 81 in CF

Hard to count that 3.7 entirely towards 2b.

I know, but when I put 2B only splits, it would not let me do split seasons, too.

Agreed, especially if the return of Casas is in doubt at the end of the month.

Nick Senzel was just placed on release waivers, which he very likely clears. But a claim wouldn’t be a financial albatross.

He has a .717 PS vs LHP this year. Not great but he is .783 for his career and was over 1.000 in 2023. He has played 2b, 3b, and all 3 outfield spots. Presumably he could handle 1b, although it isn’t necessary with Romy Gonzalez around. His StatCast shows both clear strengths and weaknesses. Could platoon at 2b with Hamilton or in RF with Abreu.

He’s a better option than Jamie Westbrook…

Westbrook has a higher OPS than Senzel against LHP. Not sure Senzel will ever reach the ceiling people once thought he had. He's also a dreadful fielder.

The series before the deadline are:

3 KC

3 @ LAD

3 @ COL

3 NYY

3 SEA

Need to go 9-6? That would have them at a 90 win pace at the deadline.

Westbrook has 27 plate appearances. There’s a better than decent chance he doesn’t hold up as is.

Interestingly, Westbrook is 11 days older…

Notin’s revamped Deadline Wish List

Priority 1: Starting pitcher. Preferences in order are 1. Zach Eflin 2. Nate Eovaldi 3. Yusei Kikuchi 4. Tyler Anderson. Any of these 4 makes me happy.

Priority 2: RHH OF/1b/DH. Mark Canha is the perfect fit here.

Priority 3: Starting pitching depth. Nothing crazy, just maybe a Chris Flexen-type.

We have one of the worse ss/2nd defensive alignments in all of baseball and a glaring shortage of RHB, I'd add a RHH SS as my Priority #2 after pitching. Pitching is certainly priority #1

Outside of Raffy the rest of the IF is patch work on a daily basis that doesn’t show up as much when they are winning. Lose a couple games, because of it, and it will be a different story.

Raffy hasn't been as bad at 3B this year either, certainly not GG caliber but he's been fine, I think he looks better there too when a guy who can really man SS is playing next to him.

I was on the Paul DeJong bandwagon for a while. And I’ll still be glad if they add him. But then I wonder what is the fallout. Say they get DeJong. Rafaela moves to CF. This means Duran goes to LF. Then who plays RF and who sits between O’Neill and Abreu?

I just question if the Sox would go it. Maybe demoting Valdez and leaving 2b to Hamilton/Gonzalez will create a satisfactory bump in defense…

Posted (edited)

I know Dejong will hit a few HRs, but he isn't a good hitter and the stats reflect that. I don't know if he is a major defensive upgrade over Rafeala. I think it makes more sense to go with Rafeala as the full time SS and move him back to CF next year. Dejong isn't going to help you win games with his bat and so what is the point? And I seriously doubt he is a huge upgrade defensively over Rafeala; he has more experience as a major league SS but he is less athletic.

Trade for someone who can replace D.Smith at 1b and then when Casas returns, you have the depth to move out Yoshida if Yoshida doesn't turn it around. We have seen some positive signs from Yoshida but he has more work to do.

I'll need to look into the Blue Jays SPs, but maybe the Red Sox can get V-Lad Guererro and an SP for Kyle Teel and a few other prospects. I can live with trading away Teel, especially with the development of Wong. While I'm open to trading Teel, I'm not open to trading Mayer, Campbell, Anthony, and a few others. And while I'm open to trading Teel, I want something really good for him, like V.Guerrero.

That was the question I was asking you, earlier. Moving Rafaela to FT CF means benching a damn good hitter.

Ideally, we get a solid SP and a RHd 2Bman who can hit and play D.

The problem is, I have yet to hear a name that grabs my attention and is available.

Not sure who might be trades, but these are the highest fWAR 2Bmen on possible non contenders:

India

Semien

Hoerner

L Garcia

Breslow did an interview within the last week. I don't have a link, but it is on YouTube somewhere and he mentioned Grissom a few times. My take is that he expects Grissom to return this year and contribute. Accordingly, I don't think the Red Sox are pursuing a 2b--I think they are content with Hamilton until Grissom returns.
