Give Valdez a 1Bman mitt inAAA. It’s obvious he can never play 2B well enough.

He’s like 5’9”. Maybe.

Him, Yoshida and Rafaela are the Lollipop Guild…

The point should be that everyone should play DH and probably just not default to one guy that can't field OR hit.

Why? Do you think Big Papi was a failure? How about Ohtani this season?

Perhaps you've read my quote about Jimmy Piersall, who said he wanted his salary doubled because he had to cover CF and LF when Ted Williams was in the Sox left field. So, in a way, Ted Williams was a semi-DH. So too Babe Ruth in RF for the Yankees.

I don’t think most teams have a FT DH, but it’s worked out pretty good for the Red Sox through the years.

Yes, they've won 4 rings with extremely productive DH's.

We already have a short side platoon DH in Ref. Our IF is set. Where else can we play him?

On another team?

Really what this team needs is a 2b. Still.

Valdez cannot field. Or hit LHP. Westbrook is the kind of player who should only start once you traded away your 2bman at the deadline and are playing out the string. Grissom is AWOL. And since Pedroia got hurt this position has been a void with the exception of some brief glimpses of hope from Brock Holt and Trevor Story.

Not sure what 2b is available this month. Brandon Drury checks every box except the one that says “not having a horrible season at the plate right now.”

Any other thoughts?

Agree. DH can work either way--just one guy or several.

This thread is about trades this month and I'd hate for the Sox to make a big deal to "fix" the 2b problem when next year they will probably have both Story and Mayer along with Hamilton, Rafaela, and possibly even Gonzalez.

They can get a rental player this month whose contract expires in November. Like the aforementioned Drury…

Yorke is not much better on D than Romy & DHam. I’m not sure he’s out hit DHam, Valdez and maybe Romy.

Yorke was bad for two straight years and now people want to add him to the 40 and bring him up for a playoff run after a good month.

I know -- why would any player deserve promotion for doing well! There has to be some other suspect striking out all the time who would fit in better on the parent club.

Is he good... or just doing good? Ask the other high school picks from the 2020 who are already in The Show.

You're killing me, Smalls sample size (Whitman's Sampler 36 oz, 72-piece box recommends a daily limit of three pinky pushes to the bottoms of assorted creme chocolates to determine filling flavors).

Team president Sam Kennedy just reiterated "resources will not be a problem when it comes to doing everything we can to be a winning championship team for the now and for the long term." Pressed for specific examples, he reportedly listed fossil fuels, solar power, banned library books, campus posters, unfolded maps, Google Earth, and Volume S of the Encyclopedia Britannica currently holding up the broken window in his office...

They tried 1B. He's short and also not good at 1B.

Big Papi and Ohtani hit the piss out of the ball, Masa does not. Seems pretty explanatory to me.

If you have a guy with a monster bat, it's not an issue at all. Just needs to be a middle of the order guy.

And what to do if he struggles and we witness his bad defense?

He's worse on D than Romy and DHam.

He was not good for 2 straight years and continued to not be good in AA this year. He's only been good for 27 games. He's season OPS is only 804.

Sorry, I guess I was being too defensive here. How can guys that run an entire minor league not know who's good or bad, when all they have to do is look at stats.

He's so good that they keep moving him to LF. The minor league defensive awards are meaningless. Hamilton won an award last year. Devers won an award when he was with the Sox.

Defensive whiz Bobby Dalbec won the Sox MiLB defensive player of the year award in 2018 when he had 20 errors at 3B. The following year they started the transition to 1B.

Hamilton has a bWAR of 1.6 and fWAR of 1.1 in about i/3 of a season's work, so he really hasn't been bad.

The under the hood stuff just isn't very promising. https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/david-hamilton-666152?stats=statcast-r-hitting-mlb Since June 14th, his OPS is only 529. He's most likely a bench guy if that. He had a nice little hot streak and needs more of those to stick around.

That award is given out based on how the player handles press conferences…

You could probably call him adequate at least.

I can't see them giving up much to upgrade the position at the deadline. I assume if they do buy it'll be pitching.
