Bauer has multiple incidents on his resume, on and off the field - none of them illegal, but in sum he just seems like a guy who's way more trouble than he's worth. And his skills may not be there any more either.

But the Red Sox can't sign any of these guys.

The LA Times did a "GM Interview" with Bauer that ran last week. His answers were pretty s*** in it. I don't think any team that signs him would be pleased if that is how he's going to handle himself going forward. He's still blaming his current social media issues on others rather than just not posting at all. He's still very combative and believes that and PR issues would blow over in 3 days for a new team. He's a dumb guy who believes that he's very smart.

So, all the hype about Ohtani and Yamo's mega deals driving up the price for those to follow was just that: hype.

The other guys aren't in their league for sure.

Don't know how many of next winter's free agent pitchers are represented by Boras, but gotta wonder if the bidding for those who aren't will be hotter because they aren't. At least we know it will be earlier.

The Red Sox had a zoom meeting with Jordan Montgomery recently. He’d represent an upgrade for their ‘24 rotation, and if signed to a long-term deal, could be part of the staff rotation. They certainly have the payroll flexibility to make it happen.

One NL executive yesterday said "we hear the Red Sox and Scott Boras had a good meeting recently and may get some deal eventually done on Jordan Montgomery."

Monty looking more and more likely.

While not quite the star that Snell is -- two Cys, and a starting pitcher -- Bellinger (still only 28, with a 8 WAR MVP year) is kinda the everyday version of inconsistency among Boras' binders.

But as far as free agent pitching, and the Red Sox waiting until they're good again before they spend again (it kills me to type that, but that. is. the assumed plan... at least here) -- does anyone really think that a year from now, the cost of starting pitching will GO DOWN?!?

That 8 fWAR year was 5 years ago. Since then, he's only put up 6.3 fWAR. He's not barreling the ball anymore and his exit velo is down. If his BABIP drops, it'll get ugly for him.

Totally agree. Wonder who was behind the hype? (Agents wanting more? Or owners wringing their hands about how unfairly they are treated and how impoverished they are? -- I suspect the latter.) (then again, maybe it was just bored fans making sh*t up!)

They all had one agent: Scott Boras.

Just for fun sometime we should have a look at what the Red Sox rosters this century would have looked like if you removed all the free agents...

And didn't let players leave either?

The Sox have been meeting with Montgomery and are still the highest bidder. Boras is just holding out for more money. The worry is that another team could swoop in and still outbid the Sox.

Angels are also noted as finalists today, as reported by:

I don't feel like pulling up the list this early, but from my recollection it was a much more impressive list next year than this year in terms of pitching. You would think, that would decrease the value of Montgomery and Snell being able to sign a one year deal pillow contract.

But Bauer does provide an example of the Price of pitching going down; he has said he will play for one year for his the league minimum.

If we lose out on Monty, I'd bite the bullet on Bauer and give $500K more than the highest bidder. Promise him a SP slot, once in shape.

The prices have been going up, pretty steadily, so the hype did have some reasoning behind it, but it looks like just a handful of teams are going nutty with spending, and what they paid did not "set the price" for those looking to sign with non-nutty teams.

If the money is such a scary thing, just demand that there be no "no-trade" clause.

What worries me, is the Sox history of sticking to a value number and not being willing to counter a higher offer.

If another team offers just slightly more, and we don't budge an inch, I'll be even more pissed than I am, now, with JH.

Haven't I been saying all along that the Sox were going to sign Montgomery this offseason?????

I hope you are right.

I think he might take a 4 year deal with a hefty buyout on the 5th year option.

Maybe $90M/4 with a $8M buy out on a $20M 5th year option. Essentially:

$98M/4

or

$110M/5

It's also a report about a meeting that took place two weeks ago, kind of sounds like Boras spin. I could just as easily see Philly or Texas swooping in and signing him at the last minute.

For now. Wheeler is already working on an extension. You never know who gets hurt or extended this season.

Texas is supposedly completely out and aren't spending due to tv money issues.

Those deals seem fine to me? I'd be upset if he signed for that elsewhere.

$90mill over 4?

That’s an insulting offer! Just ask Bogaerts!

Alex Cora confirms that the Red Sox latest zoom call with Jordan Montgomery was two weeks ago.

What's the rush, right?

I don't think we get Monty. I think that Henry is planning to sell the team and is reducing budget to make the team a more attractive investment. And I sure hope he succeeds because this team has become a joke.

I doubt they are selling the team. They are using FSG as a complete sports portfolio and the Sox are one of the best investments in it, including Fenway park. If they sold now, they'd most likely be looking for another MLB team to buy at some point. Unless they were anticipating a drop in valuations, it doesn't make sense.

They are reducing the payroll because Henry believes the Sox SHOULD be better when they spend less money. He still pines for the days when he was courting Billy Beane and undervalued assets. Now, all teams are going for the same guys using virtually the same metrics. The Sox recently have set their valuations on guys, refuse to budge (ex: Bogey, Betts) and the market shows how far off they are. For Henry, it's more about a pissing contest than anything else. It's about him just being proven right because he's so much smarter than everyone else.

Eventually I don't think he will have a choice. Another last place finish this year is likely and its not like we have a plethora of SPs that are worth anything in the minors. I hope that the fans vote this year with their feet and force Henry's hand. We deserve better.
