He'd be a 3-5 innings guy in the pen, so it's like starting, anyway.

From what’s been reported Crawford at the moment has been penciled into the rotation, and Wink, Whit, and Houck will battle for the 5th spot. No matter how it works out there are more than enough arms for the pen. I’ve been saying for 2 years that Whit, and Houck should stay in the pen unless needed, which will most likely will happen at some point.

As much as I agree Houck, Whitlock and Winckowski all belong in the bullpen, that situation gets less likely with every passing day.

The biggest hope lies in the abundance of unsigned free agents, which do serve as a reminder that the off-season isn’t over yet…

Bulk guys like that don't really exist anymore. When he was put back into the rotation, it took several turns for him to get back into the swing.

True, and it just like when the Red Sox were counting on their injured starters coming back last year like they were going to pick up where they left off. It takes time, and buildup.

Crawford last year started in the rotation, was put into the pen for almost two months (only pitched over 3 innings or more in relief twice in that span! don't tell moon) and then needed 4 starts to get back to pitching 5 inning starts again. Probably should have just left him in the rotation.

With the 2024 rotation, I foresee many more opportunities for 3-5 inning relief jobs.

I believe Crawford only started in the rotation, because some of the other starters weren’t ready at the start of the season. As it turned out though he was definitely a better option than Kluber.

I guess The Kut Man will have to do a better job in the rotation, so that doesn’t happen.

Pens don't work like that anymore. Those opportunities are few and far between unless there is an opener.

2023 got Klubered.

Don’t mention the word opener. We saw way too much of that last year. Seems like the Bern Man was starting every other day.

He was at least competent when he started. Guys like Joe Jacques... Yuck!

Opener is a relevant word in anyone’s 2024 MLB vocabulary. And if you want to be Tampa North, it’s an important word…

Well, the Sox used Pivetta that way:

His first 11 RP outings:

4 times he went ito his 3rd inning or completed 3 innings, then he went...

3.1

4.0

5.0

1.0

5.0

Then started a game for 7.1

4.0 in the pen

then started 2 games (4.1 & 5.0), then

5.0

0.2

2.0

3.0

Then he finished the season starting.

In 2022, Houck had these outing from the pen:

3.0

4.0

3.0

before becoming the finisher and 8th inning guy.

In 2021, Whitlock pitched numerous games into or up to 3 IP, but most were 1-2 IP.In 2022, after being demoted from the rotation, he pitched many games of 2-2.2 IP.

In 2022, Crawford only pitched 9 games in relief, but that included: 2.0, 3.0, 2.0, 5.1, In 2023, these in relief: 3.0, 6.1, 4.0, 2.1

With the 2024 rotation I see many opportunities for mop up work when the Sox are getting hammered.

If you have 2-3 guys in your pen who can go 3-5 innings, then you can afford to have a quick hook, early in games, before it becomes "mop up."

Take Houck: he has issues after facing batters twice. He really needs to be yanked after 18 batters, almost every game. If we have Pivetta, Crawford and Whitlock in the pen, it's no problem.

Seems kind of a waste to have a good closer if he doesn't get a good amount of leads to save. Trading Jansen for a decent prospect should be a priority for the Tank Sox.

It also would be a good opportunity to break in a younger guy for the back end: not a lot of high pressure games, some 7th or 8th inning match-ups, then a few saves vs. other non-contenders.

they are probably hoping Isaiah Campbell can be that guy.

#1 Don't worry, we don't care about winning, either!

#2 We'll guarantee you less money AND less years!

#3 ... but who else will pay you not to pitch for 1 1/2 seasons, while you work out in your home gym?
