Nothing -- except Brez is already talking like he doesn't want a full-time DH.

Bad idea.

DH is a position. Take full advantage of the maximum hitting/minimum fielding requirements. DH isn’t a place to rest your fielders, just like closer isn’t a place to rest your starting pitchers…

They'd be better off NOT playing Masa in LF and having him DH than using it for rest reasons. Raffy only started 2 times at DH last year. Casas only started 10 times at DH last year. Who else is important enough to require rest days at DH to keep their bat in the lineup?

Just as an FYI, the GM Meetings that are underway in AZ have been cancelled due to everyone getting a stomach virus. Bloom poisoned the well.

Brewers in full rebuild.

BTV accepts Mayer and Whitlock for Corbin Burnes, Devin Williams and Willy Adames.

It's almost not outrageous.

Adames might be one of the few to be good enough to push Story back to 2B.

What a nice middle IF defense we'd have!

I'd want B urnes extended to do this deal.

Soxprospects.com also ranks Red Sox shortstops not named Mayer at #4, #9, #10, #11, #18, #20.

Not many of them are close to MLB, none of them have Mayer’s current ceiling. A few of them are certain to be moved off SS.

They did seem to be interested in Rafaela at SS.

not surprising since it has ben almost nothing other than shortstops we have been drafting for several years now

He’s an average SS with a below average bat (projected). He’s a GG CFer. Why plop him at SS?

I agree, and to me it’s a waste of talent. The Dodgers played Mookie in the IF last year too, because he can play there, but to me that’s a waste of what he can do in RF too, and it took that away.

And it was one takeout slide away from ruining Mookie's career. Not worth the risk!

Phillies are looking to trade Castellanos. He's owed 3/60. He's a corner OFer and RHB. However, he's very streaky and has only totaled 0.2 fWAR since going to PHI.

Per BTV:

Castellanos + 30M

Sale

Any takers?

I was also thinking Dombro might bite on that one. But Brez may just choose to sign Hoskins for a year instead...

He was awful in OF the last time he played out there. DD basically said he's 1B only going forward.

0.2 fWAR is absurdly bad. I'd rather keep Sale and sign Duvall.

Devers also won a Silver Slugger in 2021. This season, he led the Red Sox in games played (153), hits (157), HR (33), XBH (67), total bases (290), runs (90), RBI (100), SLG (.500) and fWAR (3.1). He was one of only three AL players with 30 homers and 100 RBIs, along with Seattle’s Julio Rodríguez and Texas’ Adolis García. Devers led AL third basemen in slugging percentage, OPS, extra-base hits, homers, RBIs and total bases, hitting .271 with 33 homers, 34 doubles, 100 RBIs and an .851 OPS. He was also nominated for the All-MLB team at third base.

He starts his 10 year deal in 2024. He's my third baseman. Keep working with him on his defense. How about some analytics? Where's his weakness? If he was our #1 worry, we should be winning 110 games.

I always thought good defense up the middle was the first need.

CC Wong...check

SS Story...check

2B ?????...????

CF ?????...????

I wanted hitters in corners with power

3B Devers....check

1B Casas.....check

LF Yoshida....nope

RF Verdugo...nope

Any questions?

I wasn't thinking Hoskins for OF, just as a cheaper RHH DH (or 1B when Casas needs a break) instead of Castellanos -- who has been a negative dWAR in the OF the past nine seasons.

The Sox just cannot take on another bad regular defensive player as part of a new CBO's new roster. Castellanos did make a few decent plays in RF during the postseason, but he's another DH waiting to happen...

If you didn’t like Verdugo’s second half OPS of .635, Castellanos’ .735 over that same stretch is an improvement. However, as it is carried by a .452 SLG, his BA/OBP splits are almost identical to Verdugo’s. Couple that with the massive drop off in defense, and you’re not necessarily improving anything. Especially if Sale turns out to be healthy…

I agree. I was just posting it as I've seen it mentioned elsewhere.

Got it. He'd be expensive for a DH and I'm not sure Crag is going to go that direction. Not a bad idea though!

Dude had a hard-hit rate above 55% for an entire season. That's absolutely bonkers.
