Well, that frees up Saturday afternoon for us!

Cora hasn’t confirmed, and said Houck would go in game #1, so I guess we’ll have to wait, and see.

Shoulder inflammation and will miss at least one start.

The news could have been a lot worse, but I'm still frightened about his health, going forward.

I like the way Bello & Paxton have looked and think Houck and Whitlock will greatly improve, but without Sale, I'm left with no more than a sliver of hope for 2023.

MLBTR reports Sale is on the 15 day IL:

The Red Sox have placed starter Chris Sale on the 15-day injured list due to inflammation in his throwing shoulder. Corey Kluber was activated from the paternity list to take the active roster spot.

Too bad this country doesn't follow Japan when it comes to paternity leaves. In Japan paternity leaves are for 12 months.

I'm still quite concerned. This is something that could lead to a long stint on the DL. Shoulder inflammation is never good.

So for the remaining 4 months of the season Chris Sale unfortunately will fall into the category of take some time off, rehab, don't know if it will hold up, on again/off again , maybe available, maybe not. A real blow to Chris and the team. Edited by vegasbob

I'm concerned, too, but it could have been worse.

It might end up being the rest of the season, but as of now, it isn't.

I was hoping we could trade sale at the trade deadline. Given he is under contract for next season, I thought we could get a couple decent prospects for him!!!!

Zero chance they were going to trade him. None.

Murphy has an ERA north of 7.00 LOL, he did look good coming out of the pen. He might really take to that role, but still....that's literally a ONE game sample size. Now you can see why the Sox are hoarding depth at the MLB level. I really hope they plan on investing in pitching next year.

Chris Murphy f***ing sucks. Not a top 40 prospect to me. Shouldn't be on the 40 man.

But, he had that one good relief outing?

Louisville has the highest OPS in the International League and he kept their contact soft. My worry is that his velo was all over the place, especially in the first inning. If he comes up in relief and tries to get over a 91 mph 4 seamer, it's not going to go well. He got it up to 96 later on in the outing, but it seemed like it took a while for him to get warmed up?

I just don't have faith that he can transition to a bullpen role the way Winckowski has.

Oh, I'm being sarcastic, I think this move is a real head scratcher.

I will say though I'm optimistic about his role in a bullpen, I think he could be good there.......but after ONE appearance down in AAA?IDK.

I realized you were being sarcastic. I didn't know about his relief outing, but went back and looked at the Statcast from the game to see what it looked like.

I don't know what their plan is right now. It's quite the mess. This is the part in the Herbie movie where s/he's in the middle of the race and falling apart.

They sort of went the opposite way from your DFA prediction…

Complete Polar Park opposites from what I see.

Nearly every pitcher is better in the bullpen than the rotation. But “better” doesn’t always elevate them to “good”…

There are a few exceptions and it really depends on the type of "stuff" the guy has. I never liked Derek Lowe out of the pen. He seemed to be a starter only profile to me.

Most guys with a good and varied but not overpowering arsenal are better as starters. And a knuckleballer in relief is asking for trouble.

I made fun of Paxton for being the Invisible Man for a year. But if HG Wells is your author (for people who used to read), his story is evolving into The Time Machine.

Another Bloom $10 million flea market find (some assembly required), Paxton has so far been worth the wait -- not quite the impact yet of the delayed debut of Schwarber, but finally contributing more than the ghost of Mondesi.

$10 mil is what the Red Sox paid Paxton over the past two seasons, but if we look at it as a total salary for his actual games this year, that's not terrible for a decent starter... and in between Eovaldi and Wacha.

The question for posters worried about budget and taxes: which one will go on the IL first? The answer is always Sale.

Actually most guys when going to the pen can add 3-4 mph to a fastball since they don’t have to pace themselves. You see this happen every All Star game when pitcher normally a starter just goes one inning.

Not to mention facing a hitter one time per game.
