Now we need to be patient with him. He has a good defensive reputation to go with a good hit tool in the minors. Good time to see what he can do.

Sox prospects says this about his D:

Potential solid-average defender there.

Refsnyder now has the best OPS on the team. Yes, it's only 138 PAs, but still a nice addition to the team, at no cost.

Another nice Bloom addition, Schreiber, still leads the team in OPS Against, and if you don't count Sale at .584 in 25 PAs against and Valdez at ,589 in 72 PAs, he is way ahead of the rest:

.539 Schreiber (215 PAs)

.602 Wacha (347 & another Bloom addition)

.608 Houck (247)

.616 Strahm (145- Bloom again.)

.637 Whitlock (299- Bloom from the year b4)

.664 Sawamura (221- same as Whitlock)

.670 Danish (134- sense a trend, here?)

.688 Familia (37)

.729 Barnes (139)

.731 Pivetta (641 most PAs against and another Bloomer)

.743 Davis (254 & gone)

.744 Diekman (171 and gone for McGuire)

.754 Hill (396- Bloomer and may padd Nate in PAs against, soon))

.774 Eovaldi (400)

.794 Crawford (334- WOW on the PAs against number)

.819 Ort (97- Bloomer)

.828 Bellow (150)

.831 Robles (111- gone/Bloomer II)

.844 Wink (301- Bloomer)

.853 Brasier (224)

1.296 Seabold (63- Bloomer)

1.376 DHern (43)

Some things to maybe watch for over the last 4 weeks of the season:

Can Ref and Devers get to .900?

Will McGuire and Wong maintain their .800+ OPS?

Will JD end up above or below his current .770 OPS?

Will Story continue bringing his OPS up (now at .752?)

Who will finish second in rbi? (63 Bogey, 62 Story, 62 Dugo)

Can Kike bring his OPS up closer to respectability? (.646 in 300 PAs)

Will Casas earn the 2023 starting 1B job in these next 4 weeks?

Will any Sox pitcher win 12 games, this year? (Wacha 10/Pivetta 9)

Will Wacha earn a QO?

We're in September, and still have only one pitcher over 100 IP- Pivetta at 150.

We have 22 pitchers with 9+ IP

20 w 16+

17 w 30+

12 w 50+

I do get more convinced Story was the right move every time I watch him play…

His defense is top notch.

I've never been one to worry about K's, if the rest of the package is good enough, and it seems like it is- or will be.

Story is an excellent fielder, base runner and base stealer. He also is a potent, albeit streaky, power bat. When he is hot, he will carry the team on his back, but you need other consistent bats in the lineup for when he goes cold.

I think he's kind of JD Drew-esque.

Story did average 26 Hrs per 162 games on the road when with COL, and the NL West is not known for HR parks.

I'm still hopeful he will end up being a nice signing for us.

With a 2.5 fWAR in 88 games, he hasn't been bad this year.

Our pitchers need to become more Familia with the strike zone. Do we lead the league in walks and hit batsmen?

JD Drew had his best years before he signed that 5 x 14 = $70M contract with the Sox. A good right fielder and bat, but not a gamechanger.

Sox are 4th in MLB in HB (hit batters) and 11th in BB's.

Sounds like you're ready to call him a bust. ;)

Not at all it’s way to early even if he had 5 HR, and was hitting 400 already I would say the same thing, but you know my saying that until a prospect produces in a Red Sox uniform what they did on the farm doesn’t mean a thing.

Too early.

Definitely. Just 5 freaking games. And he's 22.

All the write-ups say he has a ton of potential--he can hit, especially dingers, has soft hands at 1b, etc. Slow runner, but smart. DD and crew picked him the first round of 2018 and gave him a $2.6M bonus, which he has more than lived up to so far.

The one concern would be his weight. At 6'4" he is not the tallest guy on the 28 man roster, but at 252 lbs he is certainly the heaviest--and the youngest.

Agree it's early, but not that his minor league career is irrelevant, and 90 years of MLB history--since Branch Rickey first created a minor league development system for the Cardinals--say I'm right.

I do not disagree that it's still a leap from AAA to the majors.

However, in Casas case, he graduated a year early from high school to get to the minors one year sooner, 2018. When he did so, he was a first round pick and paid a bonus of $2.6M. I don't disagree that sometimes those bonuses are wasted, but the fact that they exist suggests that MLB teams agree you can see potential before it proves itself with a great rookie season in MLB. At 22 Casas is pretty young to get to the big club, especially when he basically missed 2020 because of the pandemic.

It’s ridiculous to even ask, but the fact that many have already given up on Crawford and Winckowski shows the patience we have for minor league talent around here.

“I mean, Casas has been up nearly all week. And he’s done NOTHING to get into the ROY conversation!! Effiin overrated ‘prospect’.”

He’s a human. Give him chances to show you his good and bad…

Who isn’t giving him a chance? It was just a simple question of an early impression, and nothing more than that, so don’t try to make it so.

I don’t have one either way. I’m not even handing 1b to him over Hosmer next season. (Not that my opinion matters there.)

The Sox have had what 10 or so rookies this year, all of whom have played more than Casas. And how many of them have people already given up on? (In the case of Ort, I can understand it, since he’s already over 30.)

Casas has had the most hype. The Winkin, and Seabold types not so much, and yes I have seen enough of Duran, and Franchy.
