Lynn made a catch on a Saturday Game of the Week, it was in Baltimore. A ball that was headed over the fence, Lynn had a long run, leaped and caught the ball on its way over the fence and pulled his glove back in the same motion. It was one of the best I've seen.

Here's the clip - it's the second highlight.

Somewhere there's a clip of my favorite ever: rookie Lynn robbing Graig Nettles of extra bases at Shea Stadium in July of '75 (Yankee Stadium was being renovated). When lefty power-hitters go oppo, the ball curves towards the line; Lynn full-out sprints to left-center, dives towards the fence, snags, flips over, rolls and slides away from the plate, keeping his glove-hand curled off the ground, as Rice, backing up the play, hurdles his body. Lynn gets to his knees and pumps his arm in the air to show the umps the ball. It was the bottom of the 9th and preserved a 1-0 Sox win. Yanks were AL preseason favorites, but that play basically took the wind out NY for the season. Sox went to World Series, and lost in seven by one run... without Rice, who missed the entire postseason with a broken hand from a HBP.

Like I’ve said before don’t mistake making diving catches as being good when some would get better jumps, and not having to dive at all.

Even the greatest possible break, route and speed can still lead to the necessity of a dive to make the play.

Rule 5 protection will be defined today. We may lose a few, including Cordero.

Technically we don’t lose anybody until the Rule 5 draft…

Posted
Cordero passed through waivers.

No chance a team lets a guy pass through waivers and then picks them up in Rule V. Makes no sense.

Exactly. Had they got him through waivers, they would not have had to keep him on the 26 all year long.

This is a rare 0% issue.

I guess the deadline was NOT 9AM. We would have seen transactions by now. I believe the deadline is probably 5PM.

I just read 6 pm ET. (mlb.com)

And yet the Red Sox took Josh Rutledge that way...

Well, let's hope they don't procrastinate and can make the moves at lunch time so we'll have something to talk about on a slow Friday afternoon.

Oh please. No moves until 5:59 ET. We all know it...

Not really. Sox wanted to outright Rutledge to AAA, he declined and accepted FA. He signed a deal with the Rockies on 11/23. Sox selected him in the Rule 5 draft two weeks later.

Promise?

(LOL)

This has always been a kill time at work thing for me. Weekends are for you guys to post whatever horrible things you want to post. I only check in if something major happens.

Currently, cots has us at an estimated $181M, including the player benefits and Price's $16M.

If they lower the first tax line to $180M, we're already over, unless we sign nobody and let an arb player go.

If we project getting to where last year's tax line was, we'd have about $30M to spend. If we plan on going over the first line but not the second (under the current rules), we'd have just under $50M to spend.

Not knowing what the spending budget will be, makes it hard to try and guess who we might sign, and Bloom might be waiting to know the new system before signing any big names.

Going by MLBTR's estimates on AAV contract costs, who would you suggest the Sox sign at these specific budgets?

$20M

$40M

$60M

Without looking real hard at it, here's what I come up with off the top of my head:

$20M

9 x 3 S Matz

8 x 2 A Cobb

3 x 3 Iggy

$40M

14 x 4 Jon Gray

14 x 3 DeSclafini

9 x 3 Graveman

3 x 2 Iggy

$60M

40 x 3 Scherzer

9 x 3 Graveman

7 x 2 Villar

or

20 x 5 Baez

15 x 1 Greinke

14 x 4 J Gray

9 x 3 Graveman

I know I could do better with time, but I just wanted to get some others to give their suggestions at each level.

I really need help in learning what Steve Matz brings to the table that Danny Duffy doesn't. Matz' name seems to be getting thrown around a lot more than he actually deserves...

Thining 3 free agents for Boston tops.

1 starting pitcher. Prefer GRay, but it will probably be someone like Danny Duffy or Jose Urena.

1 relief pitcher. I will guess it will be Archie Bradley, Hansel Robles, Hector Neris, or Ryan Tepera. They all seem a bit Bloom-ish.

1 second baseman. I like Cesar Hernandez, but Bloom seems to like infielders who play a boatload of positions, including Kike, Santana, Arroyo, Jose Peraza, and even Jose Iglesias. So let's predict Leury Garcia here for no real reason except that one plus he fits any budget.

I did go bargain basement across the board. Not that I think Bloom necessarily will, but I also have no clue about his budget....

Going by Kennedy’s, and Blooms year end presser, and not signing E Rod, because contract was to long, and big, and no names to replace him what do you think will be the most likely option?

So the plan is not only mediocrity, it's doubling down on mediocrity?

I think Gray/Bradley/Hernandez would be a decent offseason. I'd rather a higher upside guy in the rotation, but I don't think they are breaking the bank there. I really don't want them to bring in Neris.
