This may be viewed as good news for baseball fans: as of January 15, Canada will no longer let unvaccinated pro athletes into its country.

Canada has just done the US and MLB owners and players a big favor, because now there can be no political debate for anyone who either plays for or against the Toronto Blue Jays. The new CBA probably doesn't even to have worry about including any official language on the issue, because presumably every big leaguer will now have to automatically get vaccinated.

Sure, many teams in the NL aren't scheduled to face Toronto in '22, but a lot of players change teams during a season, and it's unlikely anyone would want to risk losing a roster spot. Plus, the Jays are a World Series contender, so any NL club with likewise goals will want to be prepared accordingly. Of course, this is provided the MLB doesn't try to hose Toronto fans again, and force the Jays to play in Florida or New York for another season.

Maybe this news will at least force a division rival like the Red Sox to take the proper steps to help prevent losing half its team again in the middle of another pennant race next summer...

Aren’t that all trade candidates, except $19.5 mill worth of JD? One year ago, would you have colored Benintendi blue?

I guess they're the most likely trade candidates. There are some unlikely ones too.

Yes, I would have colored Beni blue, but this list is only showing those who are borderline 40 man roster players..

Sox select just 4:

Downs

Bello

Winckowski

Crawford

If there was a forum pool on guessing this - and the heck isn’t there one? - I would have lost mightily…

I’m not surprised Santos and Feltman weren’t protected, and Jimenez is so far away. I never really thought Cottam would be selected, but I’m surprised only 4 were selected. It means they like guys like Potts,Rosario and Arauz more than them.

If there was a forum pool on guessing this it would have been you, moon and mvp.

Per MLB Trade Rumors:

Before he signed a two-year, $50MM deal to return to the Astros, the Yankees made a decent push to sign veteran righty Justin Verlander. The Yankees offered Verlander $25MM for 2022, but they did not offer a second season, per Jon Heyman of the MLB Network (via Twitter). Verlander ultimately got $25MM a year for two years with an opt-out from the Astros.

Guess Verlander wanted to stay with a winning organization rather than go to the Yankees.

I’d say the second $25M had something to do with the choice.

In that case, I would have won. Those guys wanted to protect everybody up to and including Chaim Bloom’s mother-in-law

I heard she's a good cook, who only uses the finest ingredients. But what if there's another one, who prepares the exact same recipes, only with substitute generic name brands?

Gilberto was just too far away to be a real threat.

And if it was closer than it is this would still be the year. Remember, every teams farm is going through the same thing and there’s a ton of talent with missed development time. It’s a deep rule 5 with AAAA talent that might stick and could really help teams.

I hope we steal someone great from the Yankees again.

The 26 man roster really changes things, too. It’s much easier for teams, especially the few teams in tank mode to stash one or even two highly talented but far away prospects on their 26 man roster.

I will not be surprised if Jimenez and Santos are drafted.

It’s not the roster spot that’s the problem. Teams like the Orioles and Pirates often struggle just to get 25 major leaguers.

The problem is keeping the player on your MLB roster and not only taking away a year of development but coinciding that with bringing the same player one year closer to free agency. Heck one year closer to first year if arbitration.

I think a lot of times these teams realize they’re probably just better off staying the course with their own farm players…

I get that, but some teams do t even have all that promising players at 39 & 40 either, including the Sox. That’s actually one reason I was surprised we only protected 4 when we have guys likePotts and Plawecki taking up slots. I think several tams are going to swoop on multiple Rule 5 selections , this year.

But for a lot of teams, the Sox unprotected players might not be the best options available. We might lose a player, but so will a lot of teams.

We might lose two and draft one. Maybe that’s a reason we kept some slots open.

And is there anyone we really worry about losing?

Jimenez is the highest ranked of the unprotected, but he’s still in A ball. Ward is probably two years away from actually being controlled by a new team, assuming he can stay healthy. And by then he’ll be pushing 26 with still only maybe 6 innings above A ball.

I suppose there always someone like Feltman or Hart that some team is willing to gamble on. Or maybe Zack Kelly, although he’s fallen grew a few cracks already…

I’d hate to lose Jimenez. I’m big on defense up the middle but he may end up being no more promising than Rosario- someone I’m okay with DFAing.

I also like Santos.

I’m not concerned about Feltman, but someone might take him.

Seems like there's no chance in hell Bloom would be seriously interested in Ray, with those extra penalties involved.

That's what I thought.

I think we'll do with something like 2 from Matz, Jon Gray or Duffy, unless we trade for someone, then sign a RP'er or two.

3-4 decent pitchers. Where they plan on using Houck and Whitlock may determine who they sign.

Who they sign may determine where Houck and Whitlock end up being slotted.

They may be flexible going into this winter is my point.

I know a lot of posters want us to replace ERod in kind or with someone even better.

I'd like that, too. I think Montas fits that bill, and maybe Jon Gray is close to even.

However, we also have to replace Perez, Richards and Ottavino. To me, guys like Matz, Duffy & Graveman would be an improvement on those three, but it's no certainty.

We should also see 100+ more IP from Sale and a few more from Houck, Brasier and others, but of course less from some who might get hurt or struggle, unexpectedly.
