Has thee been any chatter that the Sox will not extend him? I now it is out there that he plans to opt out, which is not exactly surprising news. Chatter or not, he is opting out...

Posters on here keep alluding to Sam Kennedy saying that payroll will go down or at least not increase... Not sure how to do that and retain Bogey.

My guess is we make him an offer to extend. If he turns it down, we'll have to decide to trade him or offer him a QO.

If he becomes a FA and we offer him fair market value, but someone else overpays, fine with me.

How do you determine what fair market value is? Just whatever moon dictates it as?

Obviously, if I think it's fair, I'll be okay with him signing elsewhere.

I think we all agreed the lowball offer to Lester was insulting, especially when we did not come back quickly with a better offer.

Why the need to turn every point into some epic personal battle.

If some fans think we low-balled Bogey and they stop being fans, but most think we offered a fair value, to me, that's good enough.

If it's not okay with you, then maybe you and others can go root for another team.

We have about $40M to spend and stay even with last year. Price comes off the books, next year, along with Eovaldi, JD and others.

There are numerous ways we can keep him, but to me, we should not at $30M/ yr.

It's always a trade off......If it takes $30M to retain Xander, question is did we improve? Absolutely no. Maybe we're better team with say Downs and adding a $30M free agent ace.

Exactly, but sometimes, the answer might be yes, we are better off paying $30M than losing this player, and it is hard to replace his value with $30M spent on others.

I think Betts was close to that. Devers might be, if not for his defense.

What do you think of the story being floated about the Cubs possibly trading Wilson Contrares?

MLBTR mentioned the Sox in their article about looking for a trade partner. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/10/looking-for-a-match-in-a-willson-contreras-trade.html

Per BTV, a deal of Gilberto Jimenez plus Josh Winckowski would be acceptable.. Of course, no idea how the Cubs' personnel feel about those players.

Contreras made $6.6mill last year and has one year of arbitration left, which presumably will cost $9mill (Source: None. I made it up.)

Does anyone think we can trade Vaz and his $7M option for something/anything of value?

If not, and we want to trade for Contreras, we should not give Vaz the option.

Even if we dump JD, Bogey and Vaz, I think we’d have $70-80M not $100.

We need better pitching than the unreliable Syndergaard

PETA wants MLB to get rid of the term bullpen and change it to arm barn. Just when you think these people can't get any dumber, they come up with this. LOL! Who will the Sox have in their arm barn next season?

We need to up our OBP. Bogey at 0.353 is okay (it's average). But Devers at 0.338 is terrible. He needs to up that career average. Can he become more selective, sure, but he needs to do it this coming year or bye bye.

Free Agents to look at:

1). Freddie Freeman - OBP 0.384 **

2). Kris Bryant - OBP 0.376 **

3). Corey Seager - OBP 0.367 **

4). Anthony Rizzo - OBP 0.369

5). Michael Conforto - OBP 0.356

6). Brandon Belt - OBP 0.358

** He'd be my first choice.

How about Starling Marte? OBP .381...plus 47 stolen bases (a walk or single is as good as a double).

I like the idea of Marte. He would probably come for a shorter term contract. I would trade Renfroe if we went for Marte. Even at his age, he still has good speed.

Freeman is not going anywhere. I'd stay away from Rizzo. Bryant and Seager are big bucks. Comforto and Belt might fit. With Marte and Comforto, we might consider moving Kike back to second base.

Marte is a free agent, but maybe one of many A's who could change teams this winter. San Diego just signed Bob Melvin to manage for three years; the A's had recently picked up his option for '22. Some posters have pointed to Oakland as a potential trade partner for the Sox, and smart front offices may want to strike fast with the club in current disarray.

Seager is a Yankee target which means outbidding the deepest pocketed team (although one that should get a new owner!).

Freeman isnt going anywhere.

Marte is interesting. He had his best WAR year by far in a year he missed 42 games and turned 33. I stay away from him as he’s got major risk attached as his legs slow.

OBP is important, but it's not the end all be all. Freeman would be great, but I really don't see them signing a 1b. Maybe Bryant for LF?

How long would a deal for Marte be? 3 years? He will be 34 next season.

About 20 years ago, they were telling college students to put beer in their cereal instead of milk. Like my 9 year old, they are looking for attention, but not getting good attention.

So .353 is acceptable but .338 is horrible?

Over 600 PA, a .353 OBP means the hitter gets on base via hit or walk/hbp roughly 212 times, but at 338 OBP means he gets on base 203 times. Are those extra nine times on base over 162 games and 600 PA really such a big deal that the team needs to concentrate on them as the focal point of the off-season?

Instead of having MLB rename the bullpen, maybe PETA can campaign the zoological community to rename the bull and just call it a "boy cow". Problem solved...

What?

Devers had a .352 OBP this year, not to mention a .538 SLG. And he was only 24.

Belt is a far greater injury risk as the current MLB career leader in concussions...

His career OBP is .338, largely dragged down by his .298 in 2018. But over the last 3 years, it's .350...
