That's why he can be a closer. I think Barnes falters. They keep Ottavino in the 8th and DHern slides up to the 9th.

Sounds like a plan. Darwinzon, if healthy, may thrive under Cora. They can go back to using Barnes for match-ups, and if he's cooked, maybe Houck takes that role. I wanted Ottavino when he was a free agent, but there were no relievers in the budget. He may be a good guy to have vs. Yankee righty batters (career splits vs. RHB .615 OPS, LHB .792).

Also, the rumors going around are that they are still looking to add another MLB reliever. The pen should be more of a strength than a sieve.

I think Ottavino is the default closer.

I heard one of the podcasts say that Barnes and Ottavino will swap closing based on who is coming up in the order. Makes sense in theory, but in practice pitchers seem to prefer defined. roles.

We’ve been without power for 13 hours, and it’s about 25 outside (55 inside). It’s going to get to 15 tonight! I guess 1.5 million Texans are without electricity. We have about an inch of snow- most we’ve seen since moving here in ‘04.

As much as I’d like to see us add a starter like Odorizzi, the pen is a big need. I’d like to see us trade for a bridge 2Bman and use Kike in CF, but I doubt that happens. We may not even add a CFer. Maybe they trust Cordero to be healthy. Marwin is the insurance, or they go with Arroyo at 2B. It’s nice to have several options.

In Portland we’ve been without power for 12 hours (and counting) after losing power for 11 hours on Saturday. This morning I shoveled the driveway for the first time in years.

Stay safe and warm.

And Renfroe full time in LF?

I was without power for a few days when the temp went below zero. It was brutal. We had to put blankets up in the doorways of the living room and just burn stacks of wood in the fire place. Even then, it was a miserable experience. Though my kids look back on those few days fondly due to us "camping out" on the floor in the living room.

Good luck.

I don’t think every pitcher prefers a defined role. Fans universally do. But some pitchers do, some don’t care. As humans, there are very few broad brushstrokes that apply universally.

That said, many?/most?/all? probably do prefer to be named closer, as that translates financially...

Still most likely Sawamura will sign with the club and that will be the last move before spring training. I really doubt there is a serious chance of getting JBJ back due to his desire for a 4 year contract.

I finally figured out how to light the gas fireplace without electricity but it barely makes a difference. Well be okay.

Too late. I thunk it. And I like the idea of taking in the fallen Stormtrooper and finding out he’s not truly evil. Did you not root for Finn in The Force Awakens???

"Stormtrooper" sounds like a Star Wars thing, but beyond that, I have no clue as to what you're talking about.

If we signed Gardner, I would reluctantly have to pull for him, but please, no.

Yes it is a Star Wars thing. And I doubt you have to worry, as the Sox are liekly deeper into bargains that Gardner.

But I'd love to see him come to Boston and beat up on Yankee pitching for a year...

Without power for a day??? Whiners! You need to move to Maine, home of 10-15 day power outages. That's why I bit the bullet for a generator (which is not a great solution, by the way, but better than having to crap in the compost heap for a week or more.)

Umm... I lived in Maine for over 35 years.

The difference is, I had wood stoves.

The power outage took down your toilet?!!?!?!?

Wow, even vacuums don't work in Maine when the power goes out!! I hope the gravity still operated ;)

I have one too. That's how I heat my house. But it doesn't do a thing for light or hot water.

Sure. Because you need a well pump to run water. Gravity kept the compost from flying upward into my butt! 35 years in Maine? Pah! That means you're an outsider. I have more than 70, and I still don't qualify as a local.

(Where in Maine, btw?)

Portland, Gray, Limington and New Glouster. 20 years in 2 log homes. We come back to Sebago Lake every summer.

I never called myself a Maniac.

I cut down all my own trees for wood- usually 5-6 cord a year. I had Kerosene back up so no power needed for that either. Candles and lanterns for light. Gas stoves for cooking. Outside for frozen foods. Who needs a shower every week?

Cool! What about water? I suppose if you live on Sebago, you can just lug it or pump it (surreptitiously) from the lake. I cut my own wood too, but since I don't winter there anymore, a couple of cords of spruce and birch blowdowns usually does it.

In my houses I had drilled wells with good pressure but without a pump we had little water.

My parents own a place on sebago that has an artesian well. I don’t go there in the winter but I can guess they need power for water and heat.

Whole home generators are big sellers these days.

I've got one. But they aren't quite as easy and convenient as one might think. E.g., you can't really leave it running 24/7--you'll burn up propane uselessly, and unless you have a soundproof bedroom, you'll get no sleep. (But it's a lot better than not having one, and surely a lot better than a portable gas one.)
