JBj is the best CFer in the league and the greatest defensive CFer to ever play for the Boston Red Sox.

Sox lost today with JBj on the bench. coincidence? nope.

You have to be kidding!

He may or may not be, I don't know because I haven't seen Kiermaier play enough to make a decision. What I am confident of is that JBJ's stellar defense all year more than offsets his offensive deficiencies during his slumps. Which has nothing to do with Keirmaier.

Dare I say it?

That's what the stats are for. :)

I think a lot of it is just the 'we can upgrade there!' mentality, similar to yours with the catching position.

When the rest of the offense isn't really doing its job either, Jackie becomes the scapegoat.

At a .138 clip, how does he deserve more than that?

If he can get hot between now and the trade deadline, the Red Sox should consider trading him at the deadline if the Red Sox can get a nice return. Bradley Jr. isn't going to be in Boston beyond the 2020 season anyway.

If you trade Bradley jr. at the trade deadline (assuming the Red Sox are sellers at that point) the Red Sox will need a CF for 2020. They need a catcher for 2020 as well.

I doubt Duran will be ready in 2020. On the other hand, Duran should get promoted to AA soon and if he keeps hitting there, he won't be far from the big leagues.

Duran is in A ball. Let’s not hand him starting roles yet.

The Sox will still have Vazquez in 2020.

I do think that unless massive changes occur in how this team is playing, Bradley is definitely trade bait come July. The bigger question will be finding a partner to make a worthwhile deal.

And that also leaves the question - who else is trade bait? Certainly Porcello, and Holt and Nunez, assuming either is healthy. Should the Sox consider moving Martinez and hope he opts out do they can re-sign him? What about Price? I’m sure the bullpen is available, except maybe Barnes. ERod? Anyone else?

I never have disputed the value of stats. It's just that some people overrate their value. There's plenty of room for both stats and 'the eye test' in evaluating a player. Someone mentioned recently that JBJ has a defensive WAR this year of negative 0.2. That means that according to WAR he's defensively worse than a replacement player - not the average player.. but a replacement player. Essentially a AAAA guy.

Now, I'm not saying that this is a reason to ignore all of WAR - it's not. But it is reason to recognize that there can be some significant problems with WAR and especially defensive WAR. That is, unless you truly believe that JBJ is worse defensively than Bryce Brentz.

I believe that metrics people will tell you that with defensive WAR using small samples should probably be avoided.

I agree, but at the same time IMO it raises the question of the definition of "small". And what could JBJ have done defensively that would have given him a negative defensive WAR???

I actually like most of the stats but I also need to have the newer ones proven to me before I buy into them. IMO like many stats WAR is useful in expressing generalities but as I keep saying, it's not the be-all, end-all of statistics.

Bradley’sow defensive metrics aren’t a result of ability, but more likely a result of opportunity. Currently he ranks 19th (out of 23 qualifying CFs) in total plays. And only one CF with fewer opportunities has a slightly better defensive rank, probably due to a higher percentage of his plays being out of zone.

If a player is simply not as involved defensively, then he isn’t going to rank as highly as players who are more involved. But even those Rick solid believable offensive stats work this way...

Stats don't work if they don't agree with your conclusions!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would tell the metrics people that defensive WAR should be taken with a grain of salt.

As opposed to regular WAR?

Take the small samples with a grain of salt. But if you look at bigger samples they make more sense. And good defensive players like JBJ benefit hugely.

Don't trust your " eye test " . Go by defensive WAR / UZR , which is essentially someone else's " eye test ."

I certainly don't watch all the games, so my eye test is pretty useless, other than I know JBJ can go get 'em...

If we are thinking of getting rid of anyone, let's start in the announce booth . Dave O' Brien has been there way too long . Listening to him and his annoying voice and inane drivel is the worst part of the ballgame.

But “eye test” from fans who primarily watch one team have merit?

Go to a Rays board and tell them how unimpressed you were with Keirmaier. Think they will agree?

Thats a first. Team sucks, get rid of the announcer!

OB is fine when paired with someone who has personality (Eck, Jerry). Randos like Salty, Dinardo, et al should never be allowed in the booth. Just horrible.

The Sox are doing their best to get rid of the fans.

They already bought their seats for this year. It'll just impact beer sales.

Some very sobering JBJ stats:

Boston Sports Info‏ @bostonsportsinf 17m17 minutes ago

JBJ ranks this season among the 870 Red Sox batters that had a minimum of 50 AB's thru the team's first 24 games in team history

BA - .134 - 864th

OBP - .203 - 860th

SLG - .164 - 863rd

OPS - .367 - 866th

It might not improve the team , but it would make it easier to watch them win or lose .

turn volume down - lol
