Wasn't it Blair who had his moment of fame on Seinfeld by hitting a HR for a kid?

Nope. Paul O'Neil. My bad.

It was all Yankees and Mets who guested on Seinfeld. The episode you're thinking of was with Paul O'Neill.

Paul O’Neill.

The kid asked him to hit 2 HRs (which O’Neill complained about). O’Neill hit one and then had a triple with an error, so the kid refused to give back Steinbrenner’s birthday card that George accidentally gave him...

Right you gentlemen are! I'm going to use the defense that I'm getting older and my memory gets more befuddled all the time. You'll buy that... won't you? :D

The Earl Weaver reference is a perfect opportunity for me to mention Paul Blair, another great centerfielder who was never a great hitter.

Blair also played incredibly shallow CF. He was usually maybe 100 feet or less behind 2b. The only other players I ever saw who rivaled him there were Lee Mazzilli and Terry Puhl and Rick Manning.

Those are some names I never thought I’d mention again...

How sick and beautiful. :D

No, actually it was Mullins for the Orioles who didn't make that catch I was referring to. It was on April 12 in CF of Fenway.

I don't know how you dragged Keirmeir into this conversation but once again you're the one who's wrong. But that's not unusual.

I figured you were referring to the Chavis double that was seemingly misplayed on the more recent game. Not my fault that you can't use proper pronouns.

Ahhh.. but when someone says it here they DO have to be able to prove it because someone is bound to step in and name three or four players who might be able to make the play - or even a better one - in an attempt to discredit the OP.

Quick story for you, which you may already know. Earl Weaver was known to be able to quote the entire MLB rule book and quote it chapter and verse. When asked why he bothered to do it he said it was because, "Being right isn't everything. Being able to PROVE IT is".

Well, when you say "JBJ is the greatest CF" but metrics show otherwise, don't ever rely on metrics to prove any of your future points. I'll have you tagged as "eye test" dude.

Hahahaha, And it's not my fault that you're so intent on being a _______ that you jump to bad conclusions.

Oh S5 is an unabashed eye test advocate. That argument has transcended multiple message boards...

Also true. It would be fair to say that had we not started JBj all weekend we would have gotten swept by the devil rays. But hey, let’s bench/trade/dfa Jackie!

Fair to you, maybe, but not to me. The Rays have 10 triples in 23 games, but hit 5 of them last Fri-Sat with JBJ in CF for us (and Betts in RF). One of the triples was over JBJ's head but still had room to hit the ground before the wall. He has an OPS of .372 and is being paid $8.5M this year. My guess is that he has almost no trade value, so we are stuck with him, but there is the real possibility that his hitting will come around. It has before, including the 2018 postseason.

Well yes, he won the MVP for the ALCS which was great to see. But let's not get carried away: even in that series, his average was .200 (hardly Manny-esque), as it was through the entire post-season. That, given his defense, I suppose is acceptable. But a couple of weeks of that is not going to make up for his (now customary) abysmal start at the plate.

I am not defending JBJ, but I am also trying to be fair to those his devout followers. Right now, he sure ain't worth no $8.5M/year, but it's early.

The downside on JBJ is that his 2016 OPS of .832 now appears to have been that one great year that was/is in reality chimerical. The Yankees gave Ellsbury a $140M+ contract for 7 years based mostly on his totally unreal and unrepeatable 2011 season when he had 32 dingers and an OPS of .928.

I am more and more convinced that really good contracts for players actually pay for what they have already done and not what they in fact end up doing. Scott Boras is a con man.

With 2 home runs, 9 RBI and 4 walks (yielding a .400 OBP) in 5 games.

Another illustration of why batting average alone can be totally misleading.

Meh. You can "tag" me as anything you want. I won't lose any sleep over it. Honest. Just know that it may not be true.

Wrong again. I long ago came to the realization that there's room for both the eye test and stats. I just think over reliance on stats is the lazy man's way of looking at baseball.

IMO there's no doubt about either one of those statements.

(i.e. use the eye test if the stats don't back up your argument)

Of course players are paid based upon their past accomplishments. What else are you supposed to go by ? Your magic Chrystal Ball ? Fangraphs projections ? Harold Nerdwell's analytics printout ?

I can't believe these guys get paid $ to play a game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can’t believe we pay to watch them. Would you shell out hard-earned cash to watch two guys play checkers? Or Go Fish?

Strip Go Fish? Bear in mind that the original question asked about “two guys”...

JBj is the best CFer in the league and the greatest defensive CFer to ever play for the Boston Red Sox.

Sox lost today with JBj on the bench. coincidence? nope.
