If this is what JBJ does every year, then how is he an “underperformed?”

I think JBJ pretty much proves Sox fans want offense. Players like Bradley and Leon play their positions very well but don’t always, or if you're Leon, ever hit. And they gotta go. Now! Who cares if there is no one ready to step in.

Meanwhile Devers can hit, but couldn’t catch a cold if he was naked in Norway. And he’s the guy this team is supposed to build around?

Amen brother Notin.

I get it. It's because people undervalue outstanding defense. Chicks aren't the only ones who dig the long ball. Or offense.

Actually, I think dudes dig the long ball far more than chicks do!

I've tried to tell you Dewey, WAR can be your friend with defensive players like JBJ. :)

WAR thankfully values defense, as it should.

It is all about balance notin - balance. Most of us love JBJ but we would like to see him hit. Most of us love Devers but we would love to see him field. Why does it just have to be either or with us? - no balance.

On that note, a bizarre small-sample stat:

Despite a lineup that typically includes Dee Gordon and Mallex Smith, so far this season the Seattle Mariners have eight hitters who each have more home runs than J.D. Martinez (whose four homers match his total through 21 Red Sox games last year when he finished with 43 home runs).

I would vote in favor of taking the bad with the good and keeping JBJ . However , I might be okay with trading him if it would finally put an end to these repetitive and redundant threads .

Devers is 22 and has an upside, probably at 1st base in 2020. Bradley is approaching 30 and has shown geat defense but inconsistent and often very poor offense now for many years. Things won't change for the better with him and the money we will pay him should be applied to a better overall player. 2020 is a good target to make the change.

Ah the justification of “upside.” Along with “potential,” upside will break your heart more often than not.

Devers is one of the few Sox starters who not only has trade value, but also has a ready replacement. And one who can actually play third base.

The “trade Bradley” threads always miss the point. So Bradley (in your mind) sucks and needs to go. What do you think you get in a trade for someone like that? And please spare me the “Bradley isn’t right for this team arguments as well.

Bradley is good. Sure his offense is unreliable, but this team is supposed to have some reliable hitters to pick up the slack. Rather than calling out the Gold Glive CF who uses defense to keep the game close, where are the gripes about the 0HR/3RBI “slugging” third baseman and the reigning MVP with 101 OPS+? You know, the guys who are supposed to be hitting?

His trade value is low and he’ll be an easy re-sign. Keep.

You only trade if he gets white hot and his value goes up.

Who’s the replacement? Chavis? The guy they moved off 3b because he was worse than Devers defensively?

Did you stop when you found one name? No. There is another one. Keep looking...

That’s one method. The problem is once he gets hot, most of his detractors won’t want to trade him...

I think some posters would be surprised at how many GMs would love to have JBJ on their team.

The question does become what does Dombrowski want for him. Reportedly DD tried to move him this off-season...

Who else is ready? Nunez? Dalbec?

There have also been reports, over the years, that other GMs have called and asked about JBJ.

yup, I’d be very surprised. I just assume they wouldn’t give us anything in return.

“Over the years” means nothing at this point. He makes more money and has less control than at any point in his past...

True, but my guess is several GMs would give something valuable to get him. They know he will not end up with a .400 OPS this year.

(Note: I do NOT waant JBJ traded.)

The Mariners bats came out swinging.

Our pitching was not ready for them.

It seems that there is too much focus on offense, and not enough on defense. I'm not saying you specifically, but that seems to be a too prevalent theme on this forum.

That doesn't just apply to to Jackie, but to our catchers as well, and now with Chavis after one at bat.

Defense people. Defense.

I love you.

Kimmi wants to remind us that its defense, defense, defense that is an important or probably super important aspect of winning games but on the other hand, I think it is balance, balance, balance that requires runs to be scored and defense to be played to win games. When a player gets expensive, as JBJ is getting to be, he has to deliver both facets of the game. If not, we can find a FA for the same money who can deliver a better balance. JBJ's trade value, what other teams think he is worth, indicates something about his real ML value if one wants to monitize it. If we extend him for more than he is worth, shame on us.
