Would anyone trade nearly two years of Jackie Bradley Jr. for nearly four years of Seattle center fielder Mallex Smith?

Bradley currently has an OPS+ of 14 and a bWAR of a negative 0.5 while Smith has an OPS+ of 40 and a bWAR of a negative 0.8.

I doubt the Mariners, with their extended window, would do that trade.

I would. I'd take Smith and put him in RF and Mookie in CF.

The 11-16 Red Sox are a respectable 5-4 in one-run games (and 1-5 in blowout games of 5+ run margins).

Not good. Not good at all.

Using game specific to point out an issue is ignoring the bigger picture. JBJ is a hack. He has a 14 OPS+, Ouch. With a -1.1 WAR. He doesn't come cheap anymore too.

His numbers do not look good at the moment, but Jackie has been a 5.3, 2.2, and 2.8 fWAR player the last 3 years. He is our #8 or #9 hitter. He is not supposed to carry this team offensively.

Jackie's hitting, or lack thereof, is not the problem with the offense. The problem is that most of the rest of the line up is not getting the job done.

Your reasoning baffles me. As I said above you have to look at it in terms of where can we improve this team? It's that simple.

I'll give you 2nd base but 1B and 3B are aided by Chavis's power contributions. Moreland has provided good power so far. Devers is up to .295 with a high OBP. I think the power will come around soon. Yes his d is suspect but he's only 22 and still trying to figure it out at the MLB level.

JBJ is toast. He has WAY TOO MANY holes in his swing and his d has slipped. Upgrade is in order.

Watching the game. I hear there is a GREAT fielding centerfielder on the field who costs almost nothing and also can hit over .200.

Annoyed as I am with JBJ's failures at the plate, there's probably nothing to be done, at least this year. No one is going to take his salary, and the RS might just as well pay him to play for them as pay him to play for someone else.

Moreland had a hot two weeks, he's been horrible since then. Pearce has been one of worst position players in the MLB since being activated. 1B/2B are literally negatives for this team and we all know our catchers are weak hitters. Devers hasn't been bad, but not great either, and his errors, both mentally and physically have been hurting the team.

Kimmi's point about JBJ isn't that he isn't struggling, but that he is expected to be one of the weak hitters, he hits 8th in the lineup for a reason. He's in the lineup for his elite defense, and what he adds offensively is gravy. However, this year, with the whole team besides about 4 guys looking awful at the plate, it is making JBJ look even worse.

I get the frustrations with JBJ, I really do, but releasing him/giving him away while his value is this low does nothing to help the team. Who do you want to start over JBJ? We don't have many assets to trade for another OF, don't have many options on the current roster or in the minors that are ready.

Hey, one of the ESPN announcers said earlier in the game that JBJ told him that he could throw the ball 400 feet and it's that just wonderful? No requirement that he throw it accurately or get anyone out. Heck, no requirement that he even throw the durn thing 400 feet. But he can do it.

That was a perfect rally in the 3d vs. Oakland. Sox brought in 6 runs and the inning began and ended on outs by the one and only superstar, JBJ himself. But can throw the ball 400 feet. My goodness isnt't he great?

The guy has played a great centerfield for about 5 years. He's going bad right now but I think he deserves a little more respect than that.

He's one of the most irrationally hated players in recent memory. Even when he's doing good people will hate on something he's doing.

This thread identifies those who value the defense over offense and those who value the offense over defense.

The obvious question is being asked. Can't we do better? No hate in that, just a realistic question for those that want the Sox to improve our team.

I've been indoctrinated to believe that whatever happens it can always be done better. However, that wasn't the point of my post. When one looks back over the thread it's obvious that some of us value offense over defense and some value defense over offense. My post was only an observation that it's easy to tell which is which based on their posts.

Heck, I'm not even saying that one camp is right and the other is wrong. I'm just pointing out that it's fairly easy to tell who's in which camp.

How do we improve on JBJ? Make a suggestion.

This isn’t true tho.

This is a new small for SSS. 2 ab’s. We can dismiss the rbi single later in the game. That would be 1 AB sss.

Maybe you should blame Cora for continuing to trot out this malfeasance

I would be truly surprised if he is hated by anyone who knows anything about sports in general.

It is a blanket statement. I don't agree that someone wanting to see a player like JBJ hit maybe .250 is saying that his defense isn't greatly valued. I am much more defensively oriented in my thinking than i am offensively, I just believe that balance is important. I have always supported JBJ even though he really has never lived up to the expectations that he came to the big leagues with.

The word 'hate' is mostly just being used in the sports fan sense here. We're just talking about the people who keep heaping abuse on JBJ for his play and calling for him to be traded or released-to be not seen in a Red Sox uniform anymore.

Not really.

It’s more about people who don’t tolerate abysmal offense regardless of defense, which isn’t the same as that blanket statement. And I’m an ardent JBJ supporter...

His statement is perhaps a little too general, but it has a lot of truth in it. The people who want JBJ gone don't give a damn what his WAR is.

True, but they do give a damn that his OPS is .421. If it was, say, .600, he would have many fewer detractors...
