He's at +0.2 so far this year- on pace for +6.4.

SSS. Do you really think he's going to end up at 6.4 wins? He hasn't had a season that good since 2009. He has only hit 5 wins once since then.

No. But now that he will be playing more 1B than DH, his WAR should be better than last year. I also think he's going to have a decent to good year.

I do not want him to vest.

I still think he needs to earn a FT job this year and should not be handed 500+ PAs.

So far, he's doing well and has not done anything to show he should not be playing all games vs LHPs and some vs RHPs.

noted. you're in.

Add me. I've always loved Hanley (w/ the exception of his absurd days in LF). He (like his namesake Manny) make hitting look like the most natural thing in the world (well, let's not get carried away--Hanley does that SOME of the time). They also make baseball look like a fun game to play.

Why worry about line-up when every player is asked to take a maternity leave during the season? We won't see a starting line-up again until the game one of the playoffs.

I hear it's going to be cold today. Give Betts another day off. He's awful skinny to be out in this brutal cold weather.

Funny to hear someone say resting players worked for Houston. I guess when you're up 23 games you can rest some players. After Kansas City won, it was all about lengthening the bullpen. I wonder what trend will be set for 2019?

But the Sox will be imitating the Houston Astros this year. They are the new gold standard.

agree 100% with your observations.

Here's my position:

If Hanley hits 3.0 fWAR this year, he earns the vesting option.

The problem with our roster is not Hanley. It is the inexplicable 2 year contract for Moreland. We don't need him.

Clearly Cora doesn't want him.

This year don't bother me, it's next year. I see no way we can get into any FA talk with 3 very good ones on the market.

It's like we're now paying HRam $28.5M for 2 years, if we never play Moreland and let HRam vest.

Let's be reasonable, Moreland will play, we know that. At minimum, when JD plays OF, HanRam DH's & Moreland plays first. Plus Moreland is late inning defensive sub for HanRam.

And obviously Moreland is also insurance for HanRam injury.

with the winter temps he no doubt will be pulling a HanString...

It was "explicable" when Boras was filling JD's head full of 200 million dollar unicorns. At that time it was Moreland at 1st and Hanley at DH.

I'd actually prefer Moreland to play 1B vs at least half the RH'd starters. As much as I hated the signing, I thought the purpose was to keep HRam from vesting.

If that's not the reason, then the signing moves from the horrible to disgusting category.

I seriously doubt HRam will be an essential player in a championship run, but if he's needed that much, I'd change my mind.

I think this team needs for Hanley to have a good year in order to get to the WS. We need back-to-back punch in the middle of the order.

It looks/sounds like some posters are so obsessed with Hanley's not vesting that the forget that 2018 is a part of our window. My hope is that Hanley posts an OPS of ~850-.900 and leads the team through the WS even if it means he vests and then struggles in 2019.

Yes, you've already said this many times.

Yes, I think it's time to start hoping for a healthy Hanley turning in one of those big seasons he has had. He looks like he's highly motivated but also having fun.

I hate to say this. I dig Hanley a bunch and hope he does well. You can all pile on later. But I bet he stinks up the joint again this year. I do have to say the more his helmet stays on his head after a swing the better he does, and it's stayed on all this year from what I have seen.

Kimmi, S&C, CP, Thunder, Jad, and I are probably the only Red Sox fans on the planet hoping HanRam has a monstah season and his option vests.

HanRam is a class act and a great ballplayer. he is what every player should try and be. great attitude, loves the game, loves the fans, will do whatever his manager asks him to do without a single peep, and is not afraid of the spotlight.

I hope he vests.

^^This.

He is also a smart hitter. I think he's a bit of an airhead, but he's a smart hitter. And I've always thought that he gets a bad rap.

I hope he absolutely rakes this year.

Besides, playoff PAs don't count on the vesting option.

That's all I and others have been trying to say. If Hanley is hitting, he'll get the at bats. If he's not hitting, he won't. It would be kind of silly to bench him to keep his option from vesting if he is hitting well.

Devers and Beni can and IMO will become potent middle order bats. HRam will be batting 5th or 6th by September.

My point was that he had not earned a FT role before the season started.

He's doing a good job earning it in this small sample size start of the season.

I give him those bad raps but I certainly hope he does rake this year. If he vests, so be it. As long as he remains productive through 2019.

Very small sample size indeed.

I'm encouraged by what I've seen, but it's certainly too early to determine that he will produce all season.

That said, I think he will have a very good season if he stays healthy.
