The bullpen is this team's strength right now. The hypothesis of this post seems DOA.

The way we aren't hitting or scoring right now, the pen needs to have been perfect and they haven't. Some have been ...

Wait ... your opinion accepted. Just as long as the Sox aren't DOA.

Clutch is real. Curses are not.

Dadgummit, Mauer only needed one mistake.

The BP is quite good, but when the meager offense finally ties it up ... boom ....

Matthew Kory had a very good article yesterday about team depth and overvaluing relief pitching. I can't post the link right now because I'm on my tablet and I have no idea how to copy and paste on this thing. LOL Recommended reading for all.

Anyway, it points out Dombrowski's failure address the depth at 3B.

DD was negligent in not addressing the big big hole in the lineup created by Papi leaivng.

The absence of Papi is not the problem.

While a huge part of me tends to agree ... EE would have been nice, but the in house favorite is Sam Travis. They expect him to be the slugging first baseman of the near future. That also keeps us under the luxury tax limit and that relieves a huge cost on the immediate horizon.

Let's see if Abad can cut down the Twinkies today ... 11-1 ...

Today, the bullpen tried to give the game away and thankfully Kimbrel was brought in to stop the bleeding. Having Thornburg and Smith not able to help this team has left us weakened in the pen. This sitation appears to be bad luck or back reading of the medical reports.

Barnes has been struggling, but the rest of the pen has been very solid.

Robbie Ross came in and tried to give the game away. Hembree has looked bad recently.

OH NO! ONE BAD DAY!

This pen is one of the 5 best in all of baseball. Complaining about it seems silly to me.

Smoke and mirrors! Barnes is not a reliable guy. He always has issues with control.

I don't care how it gets done. Results matter to me.

7th in BAA.

3rd in Runs.

3rd in ERA.

5th in Saves.

7th in BBs (lowest).

5th in Losses (lowest).

Low batting average + not giving up walks + not blowing games = pretty good bullpen.

I usually have a very long leash on players but I did my share of complaining about Kimbrel last year and I'll admit it. His decent numbers belied the fact that he was on a tightrope all the time - a disaster waiting to happen because he couldn't find the strike zone. He lived off his past last year because he had the reputation of being someone who throws a lot of strikes so hitters were flailing away at too many pitches out of the zone.

That's also not to say that I wasn't hopeful that things would turn around every time he took the mound though.

Now... OTOH... I'm not complaining because unlike last year he's throwing strikes and not going to a 3-ball count on most hitters.

I'm reserving the right to complain about any player who's not performing as expected and to be happy with him when he turns it around.

I suppose that's within your rights as a sports fan. ;)

You know that is completely verbotten. Shame on all of you who are being level headed.

If the bats keep up what they have been doing the last couple of games in the new outdoors Twinkietown Terra Bowl, I will be glad to dismiss DDs curse, disavow and detract most of the OP ... without erasing the history in Detwah

If Barnes and Hembree turn into pumpkins our pen will not be pretty.

Hembree has looked bad the last couple of times out as has Barnes. We need the relievers that we expected to have actually pitch in the majors. Smith and Thornburg where are you?

They are injured and will be back in June. I don't think anyone expected Smith back sooner than that.

We raped our farm system for him. We gave up Margot (hitting .250 for SD) and ... and... uh... and... some nobodies.

Even more impressive than all the Ks is that it took Kimbrel only 20 pitches to record 5 Ks last night, and that's with the infield single sprinkled in there.
