Melencal was awesome too. Remember that guy mowing down the opposing line up...... I sure dont...

What's annoying about him is he has been a dominant pitcher ever since he left Boston. His ERA has been 2.23 or lower every year since he left, it was over 6 in Boston..

What????? what the f.........

I swear...... if you want to tank your career, come to Boston as a highly priced reliever.....

Kimbrel being the exception.......... but that dude hangs on by a thread every outing...

Not really true, as several teams. But rather than name examples, one simple question. If the Sox used Kimbrel to get the toughest outs on the other team rather than as a ninth inning specialist, like how the Guardians use Miller or the A's use Casilla, are the Sox a better team, worse team or the same?

Tito already had an outstanding closer, so he was able to (over) use Miller in a different role. Using your closer to get important outs in the 6th , 7th or 8th is something that the analytical deep thinkers often propose. But MLB managers have not agreed that it is a good practice. And , while there are occasional exceptions , championship teams will usually have a dominant closer. It is tough to reach the top without one.

Personally, I think it is old school thinking that needs to be changed.

Did you know, statistically, in football, if every team went for it on fourth down, they would be a much better team and win more games...

A lot of people don't want to adjust and listen to what statistics say. For example, it's surprisingly with how many extra points are missed/blocked, teams don't try for 2 more. Steelers are only team I remember doing it consistently, and it works for them. No one is consistently stopping Ben/AB/Bell from getting 2 yards.

Going for it on fourth down is a very general statement. It all depends on the situation. There are several factors involved. Then it is the coach's decision. Most MLB teams are heavily into statistics. That does not mean that they are going to adopt every off the wall idea that comes along.

ok. But stats say if you go for it every forth down you win more games.

That is because teams do not go for it on fourth down and 20 very often. Generally, its fourth and very short. If you include ALL situations and forced teams to go for it on fourth down you would lose more games, not win more.

How this. Statistics say. If you went for it every time on fourth down. You'd win more games.....

Every team. All teams.. You can't argue with science....... well you can........ but .....

Clearly not the big dipper Wilt - although he was one of the greatest of all time. Mr. Barry could do it for sure.

Wilts free throw percentage went WAY up when he started shooting underhand.

Then he decided it wasn't cool.......... went back we see everyone do now, and had his percentage drop like crazy......

I'm trying to figure out if the poster is serious about this. Is it saying that a team should always go for it on 4th down? This is so situational as to be useless without the proper context.

If these statistics said that if a team went for it on 4th down every time they were in 4th and 23 or if they were inside their opponents 30 yard line I'd think about it, but that's not what it implies.

To say that if a team has the ball 4th and 10 from their own 20 yard line they should go for it....

That's a recipe for giving up a lot of touchdowns.

It also would change game plans. If a team KNEW they had 4 downs, that would open up to different and unique strategies. It definitely could work, there is numerous HS teams who do it and have tremendous success. If some of these elite offenses had 4 downs, all they have to do is average 2.5 yards a play for a first down. I think its worth an attempt, but I don't think any NFL team is ballsy enough to attempt this. Teams don't like going away from traditional strategies.

Wilt wasn't really good from the lime no matter how he shot them. He still stands as one the greatest bb players and athletes of all time though.
