As much as I would love to see Benintendi back this year, I hope the Sox will be conservative because the combo of Holt/Young ain't that bad and Benintendi has many good seasons ahead of him.

This is no time to be penny wise and pound foolish.

i'm not sure that metaphor works. Either way, Benintendi stays in Boston. I just want to be sure Benintendi is completely well when he returns. Knees can be tricky, and the Sox medical team is not exactly renowned for their diagnoses. See, for example, how long it took for them to agree Swihart needed surgery on the ankle. And wasn't it 2010 when they blew it on Ellsbury's ribs? I do give them credit for waiting on Young, who seems to have returned brimming with health.

Agree. You don't mess with this kid's future by trying to squeeze a few games out of him at the end of the year or in the playoffs.

We also have such pitiful OF depth going forward, and even Young comes off the books after 2017.

Let's keep the killer B outfield healthy and together for many years to come.

They need to be extra cautious with his injury. With Young and Holt we can get by just fine. Hes young so Im guessing it will get better fairly quick so returning before the season is over is a good possibility if it is just a sprain.

The only way it's a good idea to rush Benintendi back is if the team is going all-in for the ring, which in itself is a bad idea. While this team has become fun (and unbearably frustrating!) to watch at times, the odds of their garnering the ring this year are slim, even with a healthy Benintendi.

Don't risk this guy's health and future in pursuit of something that realistically probably isn't even there.

I disagree. This is no time to "panic" and put a youngster's future in jeopardy.

I'm advocating your position but it seems no one understands from what I said.

I'll try another phrase. I'd rather that the Sox error on the side of caution.

Last night on the broadcast, the announcer alluded to the condition of Benintendi as making very good progress. The assumption being that he is not that far from rejoining action. I also expect they will use caution and bring him back into play only when satisfied he is fully ready.

Err on the side of caution, of course. But if there's no longer anything to be cautious about, yeah sure play him.

But which is the pound-foolish decision? Bringing him back for postseason impact and risking further injury and a reduction to his career? Or saving him from the long haul, and risking falling back into an uncompetitive state after this year, squandering the chance for glory?

Ah. It seems that we did misunderstand your position.

Benintendi has already begun running at a good pace. He will take the next step, which is cutting in and out with the knee brace on next. If all goes well he could be back in maybe 2 weeks.

I disagree. He damaged a vital part of his body that is essential to how he plays ( speed ).

The Sox are fitting him with a custom made knee brace for a reason. It is possible that he can ( and I will use the Malaprop sports jargon here ) reaggravate the injury quite easily.

The safe thing to do is shut him down if there is a decent likelihood that this will happen. Let him fully recuperate and strengthen his quad / knee over the winter and see where he is in ST.

But, as we all know, the Sox medical staff is crackerjack. I'm sure that they have made the right call!

It was good to see Benintendi running yesterday. He is young and at that age quicker to heel from a sprain. Hopefully, we see him again in 2016.

Benintendi is expected to play when they return home.

great info...thanks S13. do we have an estimate on what % he will be at? 90% healthy?

i would be amazed if he was put out there at any less than 95% or so. With Young back they might platoon more vigilantly and make sure he gets days off.

He was running pregames during the series in Oakland. The thing is timing at the plate, he won't have any rehab games to take practice swings. But with 3 weeks left, he should have enough ABs to get back into it.

Saw something last week saying they might send him on a rehab to Lowell or Salem to get a few ABs before activating him. Lowell was eliminated from their playoffs yesterday, but Salem is still in the Carolina League playoffs. Might be feasible if they make the finals there.

If he comes back with a new haircut, my heart will shrivel up and die.

Brock Sampson Holt needs to grow his hair back this offseason.

I agree...the hair has to stay for benni and Brock needs his back again. There should be an opposite rule of the MFY here in Boston requiring long hair. If I could grow my hair long again I would...but I cant :(

Slash,

Heard he was at 80% last I checked

Not everyone can pull off the long hair look. But I agree about Beni and Brock. Beni's hair is awesome!

While we're at it, Brock needs to lose the 'stache.

Word is that he will hit off of one of our callups and possibly be available to play by Wednesday. Surprised Young didn't get a look at all today.

A young-first-year player just returning from an injury, and he's going to supplant the hottest hitter (excluding Pedey) on the team over the past two weeks!???? What am I missing here?

Beni's hair > Young's stanky leg

HanRam is the answer to 2nd hottest hitter. not even close.

but point taken dust. i think we will see Beni worked back in vs RH SP while CY will get all the starts V LHP. we could eve see Papi get a blow or two vs LHP and CY DH.....

Second hottest?

Last 28 days: Hanley: 1.080 OPS Pedroia: 1.007 OPS

Last 14 days: Hanley: 1.207 OPS Pedroia: .993 OPS

Last 7 days: Hanley :1.455 OPS Pedroia: 1.193 OPS

Hanley's the hottest hitter on this team, and maybe in all of baseball, over the past month.

He's been doing a tremendous Manny impression.

Whoever is right about the hottest or 2d hottest, the fact is that Benintendi is not exactly guaranteed to play LF. Nevertheless, he will be an option.
