of course it is small sample - and using the postseason as a (not specifically addressing you, since i got a couple of replies here) clutch mcclutcherson end point is a bit off ... after all Price as a deadline pickup as the Jays were making their charge was flat out magnificent - i am sure several of those starts were clutch.

he has had some starts which got away from him - especially third and fourth time through. But I hesitate to get too into the weeds about coming up big. After all, Jon Lester blew leads in the two do-or-die starts in his career ...

A lot of Price's results last postseason involved his skipper getting greedy and wasting what were largely gems.

It's not only a small sample, but it's a small sample spread out over 6 seasons. That makes the postseason numbers even less meaningful.

Question: are there any pitchers whose postseason samples are large enough to be considered meaningful?

Probably not. And as you and I have discussed before, that is one of the biggest problems with trying to prove that 'clutch' exists in the postseason.

Yes, I do find it frustrating that we can't even consider something like Schilling's postseason numbers meaningful. We almost have to define what 'meaningful' actually means in this context.

No. Price has an ERA of 3.22 over nine seasons of regular season games. That's a significant number. He also has an ERA of 5.12 in nine post season [highest leverage] games.

Whether you like W/L records or not, they're important in the playoffs and to say that Price has had seven "off days" in nine starts is being very generous and understanding. If I'm ever accused of a crime I want you on my jury. :)

Back to Buchholz. He had a very good outing tonight only giving up 1 hit. Got to give him credit for his recent performances.

If he's not our #3 starter in the playoffs now I want a thorough investigation!

I might want him 2nd behind Porcello.

LOL.. Ok, but YOU are going to be the one to break the news to David Price! :D

Ride the hot hand.

Buch has had some of the most dominating stretches in the last 45 years of MLB. When he's "on" he's the best on the staff.

Maybe if we "dis" Price, he'll take opt out in 2 years.

And we can spend $300 million on the next available big FA pitcher.

So since we can't mathematically prove it do we assume that it doesn't exist?

The real question is...is Clay worth 13m to give us 15 great starts?

When you think about where we'd be without him, I think the question of whether he's worth the $13M this year has now been answered.

Have agree with you. Hes been worth his 13m this year just by his august/sept performace as well as his work out of the pen

I have to chuckle over the multiple posters who were willing to DFA Buch earlier this year... not even trade him- just cut his ass!

Buch is a prime example of why you don't judge players over their most recent small sample size.

(This also means we should not think this recent Buch will be next year's Buch.)

Buch's sample size over the past several years would indicate that he's going to be a half-year pitcher with absolutely terrific stuff when he's on. There are no guarantees with any player but in today's market I'll take a chance on paying Clay $13M for a half year in 2017.

Clay did throw a wrench into the model this year by sucking, without first being injured.

LOL. good point.

i will take "good clay" this time of year every year though. let him do the suck first half.

The problem is that Buchholz, like Price, is part of the reason why we didn't run away with the AL East. What he's doing is redeeming the s***-fest that was his first half. Or do first half games not matter?

Of course they matter, but he is what he is and what he is is why he's getting $13M next year ( hope) and not David Price money.
