I was looking at MLB only, where metrics can help determine is his play was worthwhile.

He has played a lot of SS.  Is he any good?  His MLB sample is too small to know and he plays for a team that could have moved him for reasons other than his performance (like the existence of Bobby Witt Jr….

Unlike others on here, I'm not obsessed with Maikel Garcia and even need to look up how to spell his name.

MLB Pipeline:

Garcia is one of the best shortstops in the Royals’ system with a quick first step, above-average arm and great range. He is instinctual at the plate and in the field.

From TalkSox's own @Davy Andrews on FanGraphs:

Garcia came up as a shortstop, but with Bobby Witt Jr. set to lock that position down for the next decade or two, he quickly settled in as one of the best defensive third basemen in the game.

Baseball America grade: 60 field, 55 arm, smooth mechanics enable plus defense at multiple spots. BA also noted his strong footwork and that he was instinctual and polished with soft hands.

We have a lot of stiffs on offense.  We need offense and what does Breslow do. He gets us a guy with a sub 0.300 career OBP in Jones.  How about Casey Schmidt?  Mike Trout?  Juan Soto?  Go big.

Kind of. Usually at 27 the odds are he is mostly what he is. Which was the main point. 6-7 years in pro ball is still a lot. He switched positions, but I still think he’s a AAAA player… I hope he proves me wrong

The thing is he started a major improvement at age 25 not 27, so it's not far-fetched to think this could be for real.

If I had to bet, I'd say he will not sustain even this .750 OPS.

Good player, not great. I like him.

Being a switch hitter is also a plus, if he can keep up this .750+ v R & L.

Ok, apparently he is a good SS.  I just bowed out from committing to anything on his 200 inning sample size in MLB.

Hes a really good player if you get the 6 fWAR Garcia from 2025.  But I’m really not obsessed with him as a solution and think KC likely prefers to keep him…

The worst thing is - he had a choice between Soto, Trout or Jones….

Yeah.  On the Angels.  He’s the new Tim Salmon, but with less upstream features…

Trout would be the absolute worst addition.

We don't need high-priced IL cling-ons.

Those who want Bichette makes me cringe.

I don’t think there’s any evidence KC wants to move him at all.

Stop being agreeable.  I miss the days when you made me defend Eric Byrnes…

Those guys won’t move until closer to the deadline, no deadline deals have happened right now.

nones had an OPS vs LHP above .900 last year.  He was DFA,d so the Sox traded for him because likely someone else would have if they did not.

if this team is in a position to buy, he’s not your trade deadline move Breslow will make

No there isn’t any evidence KC wants to move him, for all the reasons I like him…. Other than 2026 Royals had much higher expectations, and they can see this team isn’t going to be able to win as currently constructed.

KC doesn’t have much to help Boston.  Maybe the Sox could bring back Schreiber, but that’s about it.

KC was in the postseason as recently as 2024.  Doubtful they blow that up just because they missed this year.

This team is in a a position to buy TODAY -- the opportunity is NOW.

Petal to the mettle, full bottle, go for croak, hit strikes while the iron is hot, throw caution to the WIN.

And don't listen to the president when he commandeers microphones and cameras to rehash old delusions that have been fact-checked to be blatantly wrong every summer when he bloviates that "Injured savior will return and be better than anyone else we could acquire at the deadline."

Even anointed faces of the franchise who've been sent home to rehab a... hurt finger.

2024 was a long time ago finished 6 games out of WC last year and trending down. Just saying

So what do you think the Sox should give them to make them give up Maikel Garcia?

It takes two to tango, unless you want to grossly overpay I don’t think you’re trading for a premium player for at least another week.

I have plenty of names I'd like to see.  I have very few names that I want to grossly overpay for.  I wanted Burns, Chandler or Seth Hernandez pre-season, but with the recognition that they weren't being traded unless we gave up half the farm, and maybe not even then.  That's just a fact of life.

One man's treasure is another's gross overpay. We've seen hyped prospects and top draft picks flourish and flounder -- and those inconsistencies are guaranteed to continue into future seasons, which too many posters have worried way too much about since the Mookie Betts Debacle.

Hoping and wishing and praying for some future core to emerge and lead sustained contenders that are all about championships is PR speak -- a worthy goal, sure, but realistic?

RIGHT NOW, the Red Sox have a combination of pitching and defense that is as good as any other team in baseball. Give me just a little more O and go for it!

I’d do Mayer and Azocar. Maybe Early and Azocar…. He’s a good player. Reminds me of Rafaela with his Body type/ athleticism/ swing foundation.

Mayer and Azocar?Looks BTV friendly but makes zero sense for KC.

Also, I didn’t realize it, but the Royals extended Garcia, and in a team-friendly way.  They’re extremely unlikely to trade him.  They have only two players in their roster they’ve extended - him and Junior Witt.

They Royals figure to be fielding offers for Wacha and Lane Thomas and maybe Schreiber, Massey and Pasquantino, etc. .   But they likely build around Witt, Garcia, Carter Jensen and Jac Caglianone…

Rumors abound for guys like Lindor and Abrams are reportedly available.  Gleyber Torres might be.  Bo Bichette most definitely.  Every position player on the Reds except Elly de la Cruz and Sal Stewart. Spencer Steer makes a lot of sense for Boston.

As for young, controllable star players - rarely ever is anyone…

I a proponent of developing young players and bringing them up to be a part of your core.

im also a proponent of trading away those guys you develop to bring in talent to be a part of your core.

im also a supporter of signing free agents who can contribute and help your team win.

i think a good winning strategy is to do all 3.  You can’t win in today’s game by just employing one of those, and you certainly can’t sustain any type of success.

Without getting unrealistic or making up fake names (like “Yordan”), who do you think the Sox need to add?
