I think with similar salary, we could have had a much more competitive roster. I’ve been sitting on this, but to me this is Breslow assuming he is the one making decisions. I’ll explain why:
The last 14 months have been a mess for Beta Breslow…. So many wanted to just blame spending. ( I also believe the RS should never be outside top 5 in spending)
But I think the biggest problem is, we have overvalued home growing talent, versus getting proven talent that can win now and in the immediate future.
It’s not just one seriously flawed move—it’s the entire approach. The roster construction doesn’t make sense. There’s no clear direction. It feels like constant overvaluing of prospects, poor communication, and a tendency to wait until there’s actual locker room tension/ or lack of flow before making a move—by then, the value is already gone. (Duran has less trade value now than he did in January.)
Breslow knew coming out of October what this team needed: he said publicly “a real middle-of-the-order bat, a true #2 SP” and it was obvious to everyone after he traded Devers, the Bregman was the third base of the futur.
what transpired Nov-Feb That’s not “by design” we only got 1/3 goals accomplished……. IMO a failure to execute a clearly identified priority. The Bregman deal was a no-brainer to me. And a mistake that needs accountability by loss of job. We botched that. Then this idea to zag instead of zig was idiotic at best.
The pitching moves: Ranger Suárez is still struggling, I think he will be fine long term. Yet I also think we would have been better/ significantly better with Joe Ryan or Alcantara+ Bregmanin that spot vs Suarez.
The depth bets haven’t paid off. Jake Bennett /Johan Oviedo trades haven’t delivered. There’s no real impact arm here—just a collection of “maybe it works” guys.
Holding onto guys like Brayan Bello, Peyton Tolle and Marcelo Mayer only makes sense if they turn into stars. If not, you just wasted your best opportunity to improve the major league roster when their value was highest. If those guys were moved for real impact players—someone like a Ketel Marte. The roster would be more balanced, with less pressure on everyone to overperform. (Story)
I don’t even think this is about spending as much as people want to make it. It’s about philosophy. This front office is trying way too hard to homegrow everything instead of using prospects the way they’re supposed to be used in Boston—as trade capital to get proven players.
That’s the frustrating part for me. There was a clear path in November:
Re-sign Bregman
Add a legit middle-of-the-order bat (even if that ended up being W Contreras)
Use your legitimate jam in OF/ pitching prospects to go get proven talent. (Alcantara/ Ryan + Marte)
Instead, they sat in the middle. Didn’t fully commit to winning now, didn’t fully commit to building for later—and this is what you get.
It’s been bad for our little Ivy League Beta. Really f***ing bad.
