The Boston Red Sox will be without their ace for a while.

Left-handed starter Garrett Crochet went on the 15-day injured list Wednesday due to inflammation in his left shoulder. Third baseman-outfielder Nate Eaton was called up from Triple-A Worcester to take Crochet's roster spot. Crochet had been slated to start Friday, with left-hander Jake Bennett a likely candidate.

Crochet hadn't displayed the same form that led to his brilliant 2025 season, when he finished second in AL Cy Young Award voting and went 18-5 with a 2.89 FIP with an 5.7% walk rate and 31.3% strikeout rate, leading MLB with 255 strikeouts. In six starts this year, Crochet had a 4.33 FIP and 6.30 ERA, having allowed five runs twice and 11 in another. He has a 8% walk rate and 26.8% strikeout rate.

Surprisingly, this move comes after perhaps his best start of the season. In Saturday's 17-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles, Crochet went six shutout innings, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out seven.

Eaton played in 41 games for the Red Sox last year, putting up a .296/.348/.383 slash line with one homer, four RBIs and nine stolen bases. In 27 games for Worcester this year, Eaton's slash line is .292/.373/.458 with three homers, 12 RBIs and six stolen bases.

The dropping of his arm angle was a clue that things weren’t right.

I agree 100 percent.

gray, Oviedo and now crochet on the DL! Another reminder that you can never have too much depth in starting pitching.

Also Crawford and Sandoval…

The interview with the Cro Man himself was quite the word salad. First he said his arm problem whatever it was was preventable, and then said maybe it wasn’t.🤔

"You know, I don't really know." That's the right answer for me. I don't care if my ballplayers talk in circles. They don't need to be great orators.

As long as it’s not the 2020-2023 version of Chris Sale…

It’s actually surprising the Sox still have a 5 man rotation with those 5 on the IL, Dobbins and Fitts in St. Louis, and have yet to add a SP to the 40 man.

We also traded Harrison and got rid of Criswell, who started a game last year and 18 in 2024.

Also gone are Giolito, Buehler, May & Newcomb who started 58 games last year.

Imagine had we traded Tolle and Early, and not signed Suarez.

Assuming he was healthy, I thought he might be our 4 or 5, yes.

Thought Crawford might do something, too.

Yes it was said many times over. Sand Man was a waste of money from the very beginning.

This could be bigger than Duran’s struggles.

Not sure how Eaton’s fills the void.  Someone finally going to let him pitch?

I wonder if I’m one of the few who thinks that Eaton should have gotten the chance to play third a long time before making a trade for Durbin.

Why? Durbin has been better than him at every level.  I'm not saying the Sox shouldn't have tried to do better than Durbin, but just because he's been dissapointing doesn't mean Eaton was the answer.

Why not I guess is my answer.  I hope that Durbin plays better but looks to me like an absolutely meaningless trade.  I for sure would have liked to have seen a real trade to bolster a team that knew it was going to need hitting.  Once again, I hope that it works out.

Giolito was available like a week ago and signed for only 3M. Seemed like decent enough injury insurance to me considering everything that was happening at the time.

Paez: 2 G, 2 IP

Not so sure about that one!

Eaton is a better offensive player, but much worse defensively. I think their scouting saw more in Durbin than what we're getting on the field. I think their internal metrics and projections aren't all they're cracked up to be.
