One way or another, the Boston Red Sox will be looking to spend a lot of money (again) this offseason. Who they spend the money on remains to be seen. Just a week into the 2025-2026 offseason, and they have been linked to top free agents Alex Bregman, Bo Bichette, Pete Alonso, and Kyle Schwarber. In fact, Ian Browne of MLB.com recently provided insight into the team's preferences.

In an AMA thread on Reddit, Browne said the Boston Red Sox prefer Pete Alonso to Kyle Schwarber. Browne cited the fact that Schwarber was tendered a qualifying offer, meaning the Red Sox will lose a draft pick if they sign him. Additionally, they prefer Alonso's right-handed bat in Fenway Park.

Alonso appeared in all 162 games for the New York Mets, recording 38 home runs and scoring 87 runs. He raised his OPS nearly 90 points from 2024 to 2025, finishing with a mark of .871 this season. Overall, he posted a wOBA of .368 and a wRC+ of 142. Defensively, Alonso recorded a -9 Outs Above Average (OAA) and a -9 Defensive Runs Saved (DRS) over the course of the season. MLBTR projects him to get a four-year, $110 million deal.

Schwarber recorded 56 home runs, scored 111 runs, and added 10 stolen bases. His performance resulted in a .928 OPS, .391 wOBA, and a wRC+ of 153. He was primarily used as a designated hitter, appearing in left field for only eight games throughout the season. MLBTR projects him to get $135 million over five years.

Do you think the Red Sox should target Alonso or Schwarber?

The spray charts are always interesting to use to evaluate fits.  Alonso this year used all fields.  Schwarber was mainly a pull hitter.

I'll take Schwarber but pass on Alonzo myself and run Casas out there at 1B Trade any/all of Yoshida, Sogard, Hamilton, & Eaton.  Sign Bichette for 2b, let Mayer take 3b or shift Trev to 3rd and give Marcelo SS.  Not a Alonzo fan over the main plan of youth and rebuilding, but I would get Breggy Back if possible...

We are not sure Casas will be ready on opening day or even by May or June. Sure, it was his knee, but he has the other underlying health issue that is concerning.

Is that the proclivity to take borderline pitches and strike out?

Slow?  Poor fielding?

No. I love his approach.

It was the torn rib cartilage injury from 2024 that we were ever sure he recovered from fully, and it may be reoccuring.

I'm willing to bet the Browne didn't talk to anyone on the RS.  That said, Alonso is a better fit, is a righty, and two years younger.

He is a beat guy. Why wouldn't he talk to some shmoe in the FO?

Because most of the shmoes are only Assistant Vice President Shmoes?

... although if there were two shomes present, it would be more fun:

So we prefer a righty -- shmoe what

I told ya shmoe.

How do you shmoe?

Because there might be four guys who know their strategy, and none of the four will being willing to get fired for telling reporters.  You could have a shmore in the accounting department named Joe, but he likely is just giving you his personal opinion.

You have clearly never met Joe in accounting.  Very nice, very reserved.  Also a furry…

I know I should know this, or maybe I shouldn't even ask, but what's a 'furry'.  I am chronologically-challenged.

Maybe over a longer contract he adjusts his approach? It's still a better fit than a pull heavy LHB.

Maybe. Bit concerned about him changing his swing at that age, but either way, his bat will play I'm sure.

Not sure that saying "hey, pull the ball more" is a huge swing change TBH.

Justice for the accounting department!

I think any change can end up putting you out of rhythm and become a bigger issue. That said, he is a slight pull hitter naturally, so as I said, he'll still hit well at Fenway I'm sure.
