I don't see that one as a big deal.  YMMV.  It would probably have been fairer to say "reported refusal".

Who said he refused? I never saw those words or an implied refusal. Saying "I am the 3Bman" is not refusing to DH.

A better argument about what?  You're losing me now.

About Lackey being traded for his refusal to play. Yes it can get convoluted…

I really feel the Red Sox beat and media in general have failed in the Devers situation. It’s like they keep trying to manufacture controversy and create strife.

My point.

This is not their first time.  Maybe McAdam’s first time, but he’s singing a song we all know by heart here…

Sometimes I feel like I've been tied to a whipping post.

Devers sees himself as a 3Bman. There is nothing wrong with that and voicing that opinion. He made no statement or implication that he'd refuse to DH, yet that was headlined. I still can't see why you defend that blatant mischaracterization, at worst or reading into statements things that are not known to be true, at best.

To answer that we should be looking at what the interpreter said in that press conference and why it was interpreted the way it was.

I disagree.  It looks to me like the controversy was real and mainly created by the actions and communications from the team.

e.g. they told us Bregman was being strongly considered to play 2B, but all he has played is 3B in spring games.

That's overthinking it, no?  He just answered simply and unambiguously with a standard sports cliche:  "I'll do whatever ..." So case closed

Except that's not the only thing he said.

“So, are you saying if they asked you to DH, you won’t do it?” asked a Red Sox reporter.

“No, I play third,” replied Devers.

"Hell no" is not an irrational interpretation there IMHO.

And when the information came out about Devers being promised by Bloom he would only be playing third base, what did Cora say?  He said "that was under a different management".  So obviously Cora felt like he needed to defend what the team was doing.

He changed his mind, obviously, and for the better. He is a BAD defensive 3B and Bregman is a GG at the position. Its really a no brainer. Kudos to Devers for seeing that reality.

Yes, I think on all that everyone agrees.

'You won't do it? ' He said no.  So now we require a study of his mental state to know what the 'no' referred to :  the first clause? or the second? and what does a double-negative mean in Spanish perhaps?

Let it go.  Dragging this out is a pretty good way of assuring that we don't hear from him again.

Raffy had every right, and has every right to be pissed off, and feels betrayed. It doesn’t matter who said Raffy would be the Red Sox 3B for the foreseeable future. They were representing the Red Sox, and it doesn’t matter to Raffy if they are still with the Red Sox, or not IMO.  Who knows if Cora was in on those conversations as well, but saying the team is under different management now is just Cora being a Jackass IMO. Raffy has done nothing wrong, or said nothing wrong in all of this, and I would say the something if he refused to DH, or requested a trade. I’m not a big Devers Forevers guy, and not a big fan of Cora either. I don’t really care if Raffy plays 3B, DH, or 1B. Everyone Heard what Raffy had to say, and what Cora had to say in the beginning, and didn’t need any media to form their opinions IMO. I’m just waiting to see how it all turns out, and then go from there.

I'm pretty sure Raffy doesn't pay much attention to Talksox.

Bregman said he’d play 2b early in free agency, before he signed anywhere.  He came to Boston and maybe it was an option, but Devers hasn’t really been ready to field regularly.  Playing Bregman at 3b feels like the only option there.

Plus if Devers is not ready to field, this left 2b open for a handful of players to take.  No one has except maybe Mayer.

The Sox have also said they want Yoshida in the OF, but he hasn’t spent much time if any out there this spring…

I hope so.  I’m starting to take his non-responses personally…

Have to wonder how that promise went down.

Their original offer to Devers was closer to Matt Olson money, and it was explained that this was because the Sox felt Devers’ future was as a 1b. Obviously the extension paid him substantially more, and at some point, maybe position came up?

I'm still waiting for Hammy to play LF and Abreu at 1B, like AC said in January.

Why would Cora do that?

Let’s get Romy on the mound while we’re at it.  And maybe see how Whitlock is behind the plate…

No McAdam's first time either. They all need their clicks now.

If we're not seeing Devers get ready to field, it's because it's not going to happen anytime soon. Devers is the DH for the foreseeable future IMO.

Only reporters know what thoughts or actions baseball pros almost had or did.

Ask one of the scribes contemplating what bait they'll use this morning to cast for suckers. Shiners or garden worms? Or maybe something artificial; especially effective this time of year are lures.

In a sense, his shoulder issues has made the problem (if it even is one) go away... for now.

The bigger issue could become his shoulders  reactions to his aggressive bat swings, rather than any effects of fielding/throwing.      Will Raffy keep himself in as good an overall shape if he knows he won't be in the field ?

Will be as focused on the game as he would be if in the field ?     Maybe just transitioning for a while until 1B beckons.

As bad as Casas is at 1B, it beckons, now.

I do think devers should wait to play anywhere on the field, until the shoulder feels well enough.
