It’s not just one time on a hot mic. He called a fan a bitch last week in KC also, and that wasn’t the first time either. I doubt that’s the first time he’s used any of the words he’s called fans in the last week, or so. Yes he’s a fan favorite, and he may be a nice guy, but I believe he is how he acts.

Why does Jarren need to be a "nice guy" ? Have you people spent any time around celebrity/sports type? There are many nice people who enjoy fans, but there are at least as many that wouldn't piss on you if you were on fire..

Houck tested negative. A healthy young athlete. Some leader in Canada would not let him enter. Not Tanner's fault at all.

You mean Justin Trudeau, Margaret Trudeau's son by Fidel Castro ?

I don’t even think he hates the fans at all. I’ve been to games in Cincy, Boston and Baltimore this year and he’s very talkative with the fans, which can be a good thing and a bad thing. He signed a lot of autographs, was very talkative and joked a lot and took photos. I obviously don’t know him personally but he seemed to genuinely enjoy his time he talked to the fans.

I think he just made a dumb mistake when he was having a bad day.

All I’m saying is he did what he did and he’s done it more than once, and that’s what he is. It’s not even a question if he hates fans, or likes fans, or is a good guy, or bad guy, but don’t make excuses for him. I’ll say for the last time it’s just not his feet that run angry.

Ever heard him doing it before? Or pretending you know Duran?

I think the missed story here is this happened so soon after Billy Bean died…

Red did mention Duran calling a fan a "bitch" a few times here. You saw that right?

Why is it so hard to understand that some ball players are young and use

locker room language. They are not choir boys or kids that have been raised in a highly PC culture.

Duran made a mistake and now he will forever be blackballed and never get to

do a commercial (like Papi does). This is the lack of experience of a young man that is very passionate about the game of baseball.

I guess he could have said shut up "moron" instead of the F word, but that is the way it goes.

Wait, the "moron" insult would have been insulting to all the morons of the world.

Better say nothing. He will learn to ignore the hecklers.

With his persistent and juvenile attempts to goad moon, notin (and others at times) into pissing contests, Red has long ceded the moral high ground on anything. He’s tried it in this thread.

In other words, Red’s the guy in the stands trying to provoke a reaction.

Alex Speier said he's never heard that word used in the locker room. Other reporters agreed. Duran was an idiot and should have just ignored the 3rd grade insult.

The difference is that true morons like me would never even know I'm being insulted. But I'm not shore.

Or what ever insult thrown his way in KCx2.

FWIW. Duran has had multiple gay and trans people defend him, saying he’s shown nothing but respect for them in the past.

He just needs to remove the word from his vocabulary, and not entertain fans being idiots. I’m all for players chirping back at annoying fans, but maybe just don’t use words that are going to offend people or are considered slurs.

It's more likely that he's a complete dumbass than a homophobe. Maybe he's both, who knows?

Also, note to everyone, just because somebody famous spoke with you for two minutes and took a selfie doesn't make them a good person. The amount of people doing backflips to defend him is ridiculous. He f***ed up. He admitted that he f***ed up. He said he needs to be better. A two game suspension is the lightest slap in the wrist you could give someone. C'mon, who cares? He'll be in the lineup tomorrow.

Well said, and now he’ll have to be better than he was before, because most likely he’s going to hear a lot more now from the fans than he did before. I don’t think that his F’em T-shirt will work very good either.

He's going to hear it even more now. Deservedly so!

Maybe needs to try the Rafael Palmeiro branded ear plugs?

I have to agree. As Duran said the slur he was probably reacting without thinking. It does not mean he is a bad person or a homophobe.

BTW, LBJ was the most pro black president since Lincoln, nevertheless in private he used the N word regularly.

The old days were different.

JFK had concubines and the press looked the other way.

Had a ball player said the F word in the 1960s it would have been 100% ignored by the media.

Duran made a mistake and he will pay. End of story. At least he can continue to be a ballplayer.

Posted
Everything else aside, when you work for a company, it is usually not a good idea to insult their paying customers. That being said, Duran will get past this, all will be forgiven, and he has the potential to be one of the best all-around players in the game.

Wasn't he one of the players not vaccinated? This will be forgotten too. Unless of course he ends up sucking.

Yes, him and Houck. And before this incident, everyone loved Houck and Duran this year and thought they were wonderful examples of players blossoming after working their asses off.

What strikes me as a little weird or amusing or ironic or whatever is that everyone seemed to think the "f*** 'em" stuff with Duran was just swell. And of course there was Big Papi's famous use of profanity in 2013.

It's like we're desensitized to some things now, but hypersensitive to others.

There’s a difference between general profanity and the use of epithets targeted at a particular group…

I guess we just have to keep up with the ever-changing ground rules.

Yes, I agree. But a lot of people are offended by that kind of profanity too. And no one seems to give a s*** about that any more.

It's just an observation.

Was there a time when what Duran did was considered polite?

There’s been a migration towards acceptance of casual profanity for a while now. I remember when you couldn’t say “damn” on network TV, and now I go to a priest who says “no you f***ing didn’t!” to me during confession…

F-Bombs, in all forms, are thrown very frequently these days. Even by girls who take "young lady" as an insult and prefer to be thought of as a " badass". Society is always changing, usually for the better, but sometimes not. Personal and derogatory insults are never acceptable.
Posted
Polite- No. Relatively common- Yes.

But always derogatory.

And Duran is a professional ball player who used it on a paying customer. Not common in that instance, either.

It didn’t mean he’s a bad person; just a guy whose emotions got the best of him. A two game punishment is fine…

Like with everything in life, context matters. If Duran was a very hateful person, who openly advocated for gay people to be second class citizens and posted hateful things and said that word I'd be bothered.

That's not the case, that word is said a lot, even gay people use it all the time. I don't think he meant it in a hateful way at all.

That doesn't make it right, and he's suspension was warranted, but I think the small 2 game suspension reflects this. The punishment should fit the crime.

I believe he is sincere, and won't make that mistake again. I accept his apology. And to be frank, I think this whole thing is being blown out of proportion.
