What strikes me as a little weird or amusing or ironic or whatever is that everyone seemed to think the "f*** 'em" stuff with Duran was just swell. And of course there was Big Papi's famous use of profanity in 2013.

It's like we're desensitized to some things now, but hypersensitive to others.

Yes, there's a big difference between those two words!

Like with everything in life, context matters. If Duran was a very hateful person, who openly advocated for gay people to be second class citizens and posted hateful things and said that word I'd be bothered.

That's not the case, that word is said a lot, even gay people use it all the time. I don't think he meant it in a hateful way at all.

That doesn't make it right, and he's suspension was warranted, but I think the small 2 game suspension reflects this. The punishment should fit the crime.

I believe he is sincere, and won't make that mistake again. I accept his apology. And to be frank, I think this whole thing is being blown out of proportion.

Agree.

And as with everything, there is some hypocrisy. Red Sox Nation would be much more outraged had it been Aaron Judge who did it. A two game suspension would not calm the waters. Of course, Judge is a classier kind of guy and he would not do it. Verdugo maybe.

What you outline isn't hypocrisy, it's hypothetical hypocrisy. I find it ironic.

Yes I know. I'm just an inherently philosophical type who is fascinated by the quirks of human behavior and sees underlying connections between a lot of things.

The connection I see here is "not caring if anyone is offended by what you say or not". To me that applies to Duran's "f*** 'Em" shirt too. I'm most certainly not saying it's as bad as using a homophobic slur in public.

Hugh gave a pretty extensive statement back in post #90, Den, no?

Well, what he did on Post #90 was kind of soft pedal what Jarren did. And that's okay. Duran is our guy. But Hugh did not address my point about what if it was Judge who did it. Instead, he gave an odd response.

If Judge did it I'd have the same exact opinion.

Good. From my experience, much of Sox Nation would not be so even handed.

Sox fans are conditioned to heap extra abuse on Yankee players, no doubt about that. And of course Yankee fans do the same.

This is true, but Aaron Judge doesn’t really have the reputation of some huge ******* or anything.

Now if this was A-Rod when he was playing…

Growing up in Brooklyn we used the word ******' quite often. It was just another word to rag on someone like *******, prick, etc. I guess because of that I'm desensitized to it and don't think of it as a homophobic word, just another swear word. But I came to realize the word can have a vastly different meaning to others and have not uttered it in public since. Duran hopefully has learned the same thing.

I read on X (Twitter) that the Duran jersey is selling like crazy.

Is that a rumor?

They are sold out on Fanatics. Rumors about "most sold in one day" and stuff like that are probably false though. I don't think they had a huge stock of Duran jerseys to begin with.

Yeah, that pretty much echoes my thoughts.

Me, too.

Anybody with half a brain knows that word is off limits, now, and it has been for years.
