Good to see Valdez back in AAA. He can't field and wasn't hitting (88 OPS+). He has limited trade value, but the Red Sox should try to move him at the deadline, perhaps some lousy team will take a chance on him and give him some playing time at the major league level.

And yet people thought this was a circle jerk for the Bloom Squad or whatever...

It would be boring if we all said and thought the same thing.

He had a 961 OPS since being recalled from AAA on 5/29. The problem is not his hitting as he can hit the s*** out of a baseball against RHP. The problem is that he also kicks the s*** out of the baseball whenever he's at 2B. If they are going to be in the playoff hunt, every out matters and you can't have a guy like that playing a MIF position.

Valdez can hit major league pitching and makes no money. He absolutely has trade value. Just not to any team seeking a 2b…

He was hitting after his call up and with similar sample sizes as Romy and DHam over that period.

It looks that way!

Over 10% of MLBs top 270 batters are under .590.

Mario Mendoza was a career 507 OPS, FYI.

Right, he also took very few walks and had very little power. He was one bad offensive player.

But his career BA was .215, meaning even Mendoza was above the Mendoza Line…

Ole mister silk hands he was. Manos de seda. I'd take Manos: the Hands of Fate over Mario Mendoza TBH.

Manos: Hands of Fate is two hours well spent when accompanied by MST3K. Not sure anyone has ever seen that movie any other way…

He had that big year in 1980.

I feel bad for the guy. He managed to put together a 9 year MLB career, something nearly 90% of those good enough to even reach MLB can’t do. And his entire legacy is that he was among the worst hitters ever…

Torgo's family and friends would get together and watch it from time to time. Aside from that, I doubt anyone else would.

the Romero Line. after journeyman Boston infielder Ed Romero. career OPS.... .600.

It seems like .670 to .690 is okay, now.

Cora is playing as many right handed bats as possible tonight vs A's lefty starter.

We have our Big 3 prospects in Portland.

I can see Keel platooning with Wong.

If Mayer ends up short, we will have 3 of 4 infielders batting left.

If Anthony is better than Abreu then I can see him eventually getting traded. Especially now that Duran is a fixture in the outfield.

That's 5 out of six non catching positions with left handed batters.

There is no way we can keep Yoshida as our DH. That makes 6 out of seven lefties.

Would it be wise therefore to trade Mayer?

At some point we need better balance offensively.

The catching position is rarely platooned L-R, but rather by pitcher. Besides, Wong has a career reverse split that is over100 points higher v RHP.

Tonight reaffirmed your last point, which I agree is key. I think it is no coincidence that the two longest-serving Sox SS's in the last 30 seasons--Garciaparra and Bogaerts--were both good righty bats with power. When Manny showed up, he was an even better righty bat and nobody cared how well he played LF.
