Appears Orioles are leaving the Rays model.

$122M still under the cap after the trade.

The worst thing that can happen for the Red Sox in Baltimore isn't whether the O's spend big on pitching to optimize their window.

The worst thing is if the Orioles' new owners swoop in and lock down the likes of Rutschman, Henderson, Rodriguez, Holliday and Cowser longterm.

What would really be hilarious now is if the O's also sign Snell or Monty.

Our humiliation would be almost complete then.

Henry hasn’t been embarrassed enough. He’s trying to beat the system by going cheap when 20 other teams are doing just that. In things concerning baseball, he’s a dumbass. Ceiling for this year is only 4th place?!?!? It’s going to be 4 out of 5 last place finishes all on Henry.

I would assume they’d prefer to just extend Burnes first…

I agree, what Henry needs is to be totally humiliated to the point that even he can't stand it.

That happens, a lot, before a sale of a team.

The good old Red Sox would be countering the Burnes trade by soon announcing an even bigger blockbuster.

BTV accepted: Anthony, Duran, Houck to White Sox... for Cease, Robert, Benintendi and AAA pitcher Nick Nastrini.

In the real world, it's doubtful Chicago would do this deal, unless Boston throws in another good arm like Schreiber or Wikelman Gonzalez. Taking back Beni's big contract would make it appealing for the Pale Hose, but if this is truly the real world -- and not the fantasy that BoSox fans lived before the Bloom Era -- we all know the Red Sox aren't taking back any big money obligations...

... or even extending a guy like Cease -- geez, not until they're good enough to pay good enough players to make them good enough to justify good investments.

Embarrassed? He’s making money, and Fenway is getting filled even if it’s from a lot of the visiting fans teams, which is becoming more, and more.

Why Beni?

We have 26 left fielders, already.

He's also washed up.

Like I said, it's not because we'd want him, but if a team is giving up their best player and best pitcher, you can bet they're going to insist we also take their worst contract.

If the White Sox make a big move, it'll be to settle all family business.

Then why fire Bloom?

Henry brought Epstein back, that seems to fortify MVP's point that he's embarrassed, and is admitting he's a dumbass regarding baseball. Giving the reigns back to the big boys.

Makes sense.

Pretty much. Effectively John Henry is saying, I like the Red Sox, they're a big part of FSG, but I'm obviously an idiot and way to busy with this golf s*** and other s*** to do anything. Here's Theo, he knows something about baseball, let him manage the baseball side of FSG.

Maybe this is wishful thinking, but if Theo goes to Henry at some point and says "now is the time to expand payroll, we have young guys to lock up and if we bring in these players the added revenue from being a playoff competitive team pays for itself" I think Henry would listen to him"

Or at least in theory, that's how it should go.

Posted
I doubt Epstein is willing to add his name to this project, unless he's assured the capacity to create an actual outline for what this team is going to do going forward. Try to compete, or full-on rebuild, it doesn't matter, but pick a f***ing lane and stick to it. Goddamn.

In the absence of the Red Sox willing to invest in a competitive team, this would almost be a step back in the career of Theo. I don't think he would come back here if the Red Sox were turning themselves into the Pittsburgh Pirates.

I'm hopeful

This is one of those pieces of news that gets better the more you think about it. Not only do we get Theo, but Breslow has someone he already had success working with.

Now get that pitching dum-dums!

Don't forget when Theo joined the Cubs in 2012, he did so with the understanding that the rebuild (tank) would take five years.

Chicago actually lost more games his first two years than in the two seasons before Epstein took over.

There was no bridge, either. Theo's Cubs won 61, 66, 73 -- then bam, 97, 103 and World Series rings!

Something had to happen especially when Bloom got fired before the season ended. It had to be pretty good, because Bloom took a lot of the heat away from Henry.

100% although I don't think this team is too far away with the right leadership and right moves. I think they should be competing for playoffs again by 2025 if all goes well.

Clearly bringing Theo back creates a buzz that excites Red Sox fans. I wish that he could pitch but oh well. It's nice I guess that JH now has managed to bring some wealthy well knowners into the fold of management I guess but I guess I'll wait to see how it translates to the team that we yard out in the spring. So far, I'm not excited by this move at all. Hope it amounts to something.

Because he f***ed up two trade deadlines in a row.

Henry still wants to win. Just cheaper.

Nothing done seems to be for the here and now, except the Gio signing. He's like all those one year $43-10M deals rolled into one player.

I guess one could say O'Neill is, too.

The Theo addition seems more about the long term, but maybe with the idea his addition may placate some of the fan unrest.

Fans aren't going to buy more tickets just to see Theo waving at them from the owner's box.

There has to be the acquisition of an impact player to go with this...

Ownership is spread so thin, they need someone who cares about the product on the field again.

I totally agree.

The Theo addition is not going to placate any fans, if we lose.

It might help raise some hopes, right now, for some, but if nothing more is added to the roster, this winter, most fans will not be any more joyful.

Agreed. JH can save some money by trimming some of the head honchos.
