I would argue Duvall makes more sense, as he can be a starting RF. Cooper is a weak OF and probably best limited to backup 1b/DH duty. And it's not like they are going to platoon him with Casas. Maybe Yoshida, but Refsnyder can also do that...

I don't think they need MORE OFers considering the current squad includes Duran, O'Neilllll, Abreu, Rafaela, Masa and Refsnyder.

And yet they're still looking at outfielders.

I'm not so sure 6 outfielders on the 40 man roster constitutes an overabundance, especially if you're starting 4...

They can't afford a penny more for pitching, but are looking at the OF.

They should just hand the CF job to Rafaela and or Abreu.

I can see why they wouldn't want one riding the bench for most games, but if they trade Refsnyder and use Yoshida at DH near FT, we should be able to find enough PAs for the 4 we have:

LF: Duran/ Abreu (Yoshida)

CF: Rafaela/Abreu

RF: O'Neill/Abreu

I think the focus is more so on RHB than position. Soler isn't an OFer.

They are trying to wait the market out on starting pitching due to the high cost and find this year's bargain bin Kluber.

1. If they sign him, Yoshida is. Not sure of the difference if the Sox have Duvall as an OF and Yoshida as z as DH as opposed to Yoshida as an OF and Soler as a DH. I mean besides the obvious difference in defense.

2. If Breslow implements his “no set DH” plan and Cora actually plays along, Soler is an outfielder.

Every penny spent should be for pitching.

Not likely. Why not spend out on defense and help out all the pitchers.

Not to mention, spent on which pitcher? Have you seen the options out there?

I think what moon is really saying is "If the cheap pricks are going to spend any more money all, it better be on Montgomery."

Just play Rafaela in CF to improve the D.

There is no other position easy to upgrade on D without hurting the O, or costing too much.

I'd rather we sign Lauer than Duvall or Soler.

That's just a dream.

I will be pissed, if the price drops down to near Gio AAV levels.

I'm no expert on bargain basement SP'ers on the market, but Eric Lauer was pretty good from 2021-2022.

277 IP over those 2 years does not seem all that good, but it ranks 60th in MLB.

3.47 ERA ranked 30th out of all pitchers with 250+ IP (ahead of L Castillo & P Lopez)

84 ERA- ranked 31st (ahead of G Cole, Nate, Monty & Sonny Gray)

1.19 WHIP ranked 39th

4.16 xFIP ranked 58th (just ahead of Pivetta, Taillon & T Walker)

2.8 fWAR ranked 67th

Add 2023 into the sample size, and the rankings drop a lot...

54th ERA at 3.92 and 54th in ERA- at 94

75th xFIP at 4.36

I don't think Lauer would break the bank...errr... budget.

No MiL invites. Gotta save money on postage…

Absolutely! If the team is worth only 1.7 billion plus, can't take a hit like that.

It seems to me that if they thought he was worth the money, they would have given it to him. They keep getting linked to him, but are probably hoping for a deep discount so that the contract matches what they feel he is worth (i.e. much less than what was projected prior to the offseason).

The way to really improve the D would have been to slide Story over to 2b (since he's going to need to get out of the way for Mayer eventually) and acquire a glove first SS for the short term.

They still have 25M to spend before they get within 10M of last year's payroll.

Yes, I know.

I'm thinking we should be able to sign Lauer and Duvall and still be under that $10M line. Hell, we could probably sign Monty and be at the line.
