He was pushed to the pen in SF under Bailey. If Bailey liked him, we would have heard a rumor or two. We didn't.

He was barely my radar. Andrew Bailey clearly knew him so I’m not too surprised Boston walked. His xFIP over the last couple seasons was pretty nice, though…

I expected MVP to jump on his bandwagon, due to his xFIP numbers.

He wasn't bad in '21 and '22, but something went pretty wrong with him last year. His k rate dropped, but his bb rate spiked. His spin rate got wonky. He wasn't very good once he was put into the pen either. He's a guy who has bounced around and has had some injury issues.

Last year's 5.14? He doesn't even throw a lot of innings even when he's good.

Bailey worked with him directly. If there was no smoke to bringing him on, I figured there were big issues with him. They dumped Llovera. They never mentioned bringing Manaea onboard.

We were talking about the two year stretch before '23.

I was higher on Manaea than Wood. (Of course I was also higher on Brad Keller than I was on Wood.) But that shipped sailed.

You didn't SAY that.

We at port and the majority of the ships are gone.

I did say that, earlier, when I posted about Wood and Lauer being good for a couple years.

I could have spelled it out, but then you complain about my posts being too long.

Earlier? The last time you posted about Lauer in this thread was THURSDAY NIGHT, 150 POSTS AGO!!! How is anyone else supposed to remember that?

I didn't say you should remember.

I just corrected your false statement about me not saying it.

Angels signed Aaron Hicks. Are the Sox the only bidders left on Duvall now?

Sox will need to shed some more payroll to even consider Duvall. I would have much rather had Duvall then the juicer but do we really need both?

We don't really know what the budget will allow. I'd much rather spend anything available on SP'ers, but Duvall should be a help.

If we have to trade Jansen or Martin to make his contract fit, no thanks.

Tuesday morning rumor is that Justin Turner has signed with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Jays fans on Twitter are pissed about the move.

@_ParkTheBus

Blue Jays fans not wanting Justin Turner isn’t too surprising. They’ve only been watching baseball for a couple years so give them a pass.

they have said that they will be spending less on payroll this year and from what i understand they are currently only about 2 million below 2023

Sox are now putting their attention towards Garrett Cooper as a platoon bat.

You know things are bad when you start convincing yourself that Garrett cooper would actually be a decent pick up. But.......he may actually be a decent pick up.

He had a .904 OPS against LHP last year. If the Sox use him to spell Casas at 1B vs tough lefties, and play some outfield when they need another righty in the lineup he could make for a valuable bench piece. Sox now have their back up 1b.

As far as I can gather.....he can not pitch.

Did the Sox front office ever actually say that though? It was reported after the Sox shed some payroll in the Sale trade, and after it was reported they were trying to move other players. But as far as I can recollect that never came from the FO.

It feels like pure conjecture, conjecture that could be absolutely true by the way. It's hard to argue with this offseasons results so far.

Yes, they've said a lot of thing. Many times full contradicting other statements.

I don't doubt we are at or very close to our budget, right now, but I'm holding out a little hope, that if a bargain comes along, they may go over where they want to be.

They may also try to trade Jansen, Yoshida or someone else to add some space, but I'm not sure that would make us any better.

Feast your eyes on what our mighty leader Sam actually said:

It probably will be lower than it was in 2023. I don’t know that for sure. We don’t talk about specific payroll numbers.

That's not exactly saying there's a budget though. There's a difference between we can't spend, and then we won't spend. If the Sox set their budget at 215 million and are sitting at 200, does that mean they have to go out and spend that 215 just because that's their budget?

I think it's perfectly reasonable to assume their self imposed budgetary constraints could lay higher than what they actually spend. For example, they might be perfectly willing to sign Jordan Montgomery to a 4/90 dollar deal, but that's not going to happen so they "probably" won't be spending that extra 22.5 million. It's sort of a different way of being cheap.

Maybe not... but Garrett Cole Cooper Criswell can!

(I've been scolded for being too negative with all things Red Sox, so today it's all positive).

And why not set the bar high? The projected 82-win season means a winning record!

They needed a backup RHB at 1B. It's fine. Who backs up 3B. Reyes?

Sammy Wormtongue said payroll would probably be less than last season.

When was the last time anyone from the front office discussed payroll accurately?

Yes. Reyes is a traditional 2b-SS-3b utility infielder…
