I think Brez is still in on Jordan/Blake, although from what we can gather it sounds like it would be Jordan over Blake.

Fans won't like to hear this, and have effectively already annointed Bres-slow the next Bloom but in a vaccuum I can't blame him for sitting out an offseason if the price isn't worth it. I try to look at things over the long term horizon and in a basket of seasons and not just any given year. To me, it's the aggregate effect of offseason after offseason after offseason of seemingly doing little to nothing to put together a championship caliber team.

I'll pretty much withhold my judgement on him for a year. But I do think it will be interesting if he signs them, because I don't think he will do it out of panic, but rather a caclulation. To be fair, all 30 teams haven't signed these guys so far. So either something is up and we have no chance regardless, or the price is low and Breslow is doing the right thing by waiting it out.

I'd say NO CHANCE on either of the top two arms.

What about Clevinger - a PR restless dream?

Sam has done enough PR damage this offseason that nobody will care about Clevinger. The vibes are already in the toilet.

Now there still are 25 unsigned starting pitchers per MLBTR (and including Bauer).

Several will already miss some or all of 2024 (Woodruff, Kershaw, Boyd, Odorizzi, Keller)

A couple (Urias, Bauer) are PR nightmares.

Some (Greinke? Hill? Cueto? Kluber?) might be forced into retirement.

Taking out those 11, there are 14 left. Some of whom will fall into the previously mentioned categories…

Sign Woodruff to a Paxton deal.

Ryu

Kershaw

Clevinger

Lorenzen

German

Junis

Syndergaard

Keuchel

Odorizzi - health?

Chirinos

Lauer

Boyd

Keller

Velasquez

Anderson

Turnbull

The question is, which of these guys is worse in the rotation than Houck? Where's the cutoff point for just not adding a guy to add a guy? Ryu is interesting. Clevinger seems the only one on that list to be a good bet to beat out Houck for a rotation spot (Kershaw isn't coming here, I'm not high on Lorenzen).

Way to deflect!!

“Talk to the guy I won’t let do anything!”

"If you call me a liar, I'll call you a liar," said Sam the Bam Shamogram. "Nikki Mantle, Nikko Kavadis, Andrew Bailey, Bob 'Beetle Juicer' Bailey."

I'd say NO CHANCE on either of the top two arms.

I'm going to take the lazy mans way out and say 50/50, but if I was being honest I'd call it 80/20

I don't think it's probable, but if you think there's no chance I'd like to convince you that you may be surprised.

Everything comes down to dollars, if the dollars are right it makes cents. (ahhh see what I did there). I'd say there's a 20% chance the asking price goes down far enough that the Sox would look at someone like Montgomery and say, well heck we should bring him in. Maybe he will take something with an opt out after a couple years too when his wifes residency is up here.

Can he be offered a QO? he wasn't because he was traded last year, so I think he could be offered one next year if he had a one year opt out and opted out. Which honestly doesn't make sense because next years market has even more competition for him. Who knows, I know nothing.

Snell doesn't make sense.

Montgomery makes some sense. I think the Sox are vaguely interested in him, but don't want to spend right now because they don't know how long it will take for their prospects to ripen.

Snell would be more preferable, but he is so unreliable…

If you could go back in time, wouldn't you do something about baby Hitler? Maybe Clevinger rode in a TARDIS, saw what the baby was going to do in 35 years and decided to do something about it?

Snell having a Cy Young year is a guy contenders should pick up at the deadline to put them over the top.

Montgomery is a better option for a pretender that needs stability in the rotation.

Rebuilds crave consistent veterans to take the ball every week, log innings, and take the pressure off the younger pitchers and batters trying to establish themselves, plus to give the overworked bullpen some rest. Investing in a guy like Monty is never just about one playoff push.

Montgomery is a better pitcher than you give him credit for.

Was Texas a pretender last year when they picked him up? Their rotation was Eovaldi, Gray, Dunning, Heaney and Perez? Who’s the ace carrying that team?

Eovaldi? With 144 IP and a 3.63 ERA? If he’s an ace, why isn’t Bello? Before collapsing in his last 3 starts, Bello had a 3.68 ERA in 142 IP…

You misunderstand my point. Of course, Monty helped Texas win rings.

But there's no way any realistic fan is expecting him to do the same for the Dread Sox. Not this year.

p.s. when I wanted him at last year's deadline, along with another reliever like Stratton (Tex. traded for both) for a stretch run, the Sox still had the pro bats of Turner and Duvall... so more of a chance than this winter's tank.

German is a better starting pitcher than Houck. But he has lots and lots of baggage himself.

I don’t mind moving Houck to the rotation nearly as much, but if that is the case, can we at least sign a reliever to fill his spot in the bullpen?

Imagine if the Sox signed Brasier to $9M/2.

That seems worse than Diekman's $8M/2, but at least we dumped over half his contract and got a decent back-up catcher in the deal.

Brasier did have great numbers with the Dodgers last year.

If he can pitch like that again he deserves it, but the big question is if he is really that good, and can do it again.

The Dodgers are paying 110% tax now, so Brasier's 9 million is really more like 19 million in total cost.

They have money to burn, these guys.

And burn it they have. I still hope they go 162-0.

Or questionable financial decision-making skills.

Or, I suppose, both…

What’s wrong with Tommy Pham?

Aside from the assault in the outfield, the mediocre skill-set, his poor record when he was here before, you mean? Somehow, he doesn't strike me as "our" Ohtani, but maybe paired with (what's the dude's name? Hymen?), we now have a core to build around.
