Meanwhile, LAD's attendance last year topped Boston by 1.2 million. Average LA ticket price: 209 vs. Boston 170. (The only fig. that surprises me is the ave ticket price in LA; when I used to go, ticket price was essentially negligible). Imagine what that gap is going to look like this year, w/ Ohtani and Yamamoto.

Stadium capacity:

56K LAD

under 38K BOS

All of which is 100% irrelevant on why it took LA so long to extend Betts.

They signed both Ohtani and Yamamoto in less time this off-season. Do you suppose maybe they just didn’t realize how good Mookie was?

Unfortunately that option seems to have not been on the table. And stories at the time seemed to indicate Mookie’s strong desire to test the market. (He did reportedly ask for $400mill.)

Really the issue was waiting until year five to try to lock him up. It should have been done at the latest by year three.

Maybe even year two instead of signing Price…

The issue is and was Lowball Johnny.

And yet he still signed an extension with LA. Very weird!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yamamoto had to be signed by a deadline.

Maybe the Dodgers let Mookie get settled in for a while and be impressed by the place and the organization before they came to him with an offer.

There are a plethora of possibilities.

And those possibilities absolutely include the one I mentioned, right?

Am I the first one to suggest Betts wanted to test free agency?

He also tried negotiating and the Sox stopped negotiating.

Henry: We'll give you 300.

Mookie: How about 400?

Henry: twiddle thumbs for a while...

Bloom: You're traded now.

At any point they could have countered Mookie's 400. They CHOSE not to. Mookie CHOSE a number between 300 and 400. It's clear he had an appetite for an amount somewhere in between the Sox offer and his counter. Sox just didn't want to negotiate.

Absolutely. When there are so many possibilities and so little information, we all get to make our own guesses. We just have to admit they could be totally wrong.

Henry likes showing he's a tough guy sometimes.

I wonder what DD had coming back from the Dodgers when he discussed the supposed trade the year before that he backed out of?狼

Really hard for some people on here.

I don't remember this.

Supposedly DD was discussing a trade for Mookie with the Dodgers in 2019 when the Red Sox were floundering so much, but the Red Sox started to win some games, and discussion were stopped according to Friedman after Betts was signed.

There seems to be some sort of weird dynamic that goes on when "negotiating" with our own players. (I put that in quotation marks, because it's not really a give and take.)

We seem to set a firm value on our players and never go above that line- or hardly ever. The weird thing is, we start with that "top number" and never budge. Why not tell Mokkie, "$280M/10." he says, "$400M," and you come back with $300M?

The only time I can remember offering more after the first offer was with Lester, once the Cubs offer was known, and even that offer was questionable in its authenticity and motive.

I can understand a team thinking they know, mor precisely, the value of their own players. I think $300M/10 was a decent offer and very near what most felt was "market value." Why not come back with at least $310M? Do they think that might appear more insulting than twiddling their thumbs in silence?

Was an extra $10-20M really a no way position?

It's all really very strange.

For all we know, Betts might have said no to a $330 or $340M/11 counter-offer, so it seems it will always be somewhat unknown as to what extent the Sox "blew it." Maybe, he'd have said no to $372M/12.

Or he was just disinterested as he is now? Hard to say.

But it doesn't really make sense that he'd be disinterested in an asset worth $5 billion.

They did the identical thing with Bogaerts, if the reports are accurate.

The only difference was they fell $20 million short on Lester, and $118 million short on Bogaerts.

Betts stated last year that he was never given a 300M offer from the Sox. When asked about negotiations he said "go ask Bloom" and we never got anything further. Why? Sox never refuted what he said.

He already stated as much this offseason that he's just too busy with the shiny new toys.

Hey, that's my line.

I do find it amazing there was no followup on that by Sox media.

That's right. When Mookie said 'go talk to Bloom' it clearly implied there were further negotiations after Bloom took over - which would also help explain why they waited until February to trade him.

Mookie opened multiple cans of worms, and Sox media somehow snoozed on all of it.

Look, watching baseball games and getting quotes from baseball players after the game is hard work! It's a grind! They can't possibly be everywhere at once!

Maybe. But you're the only one who refuses to accept the fact that HE DID NOT test free agency.

It is indeed an incontrovertible fact.
