If I recall well Urias has a great glove and if healthy it is going to be a steal. His glove is way better than Devers, but again who isn’t?

2 career DRS at 2b, but in only 872 innings. Or roughly 60% of a season…

cots has us over $12M under the tax line, so I wonder what Bloom was told to do. I find it hard to believe they told him he could spend as much as he wanted but must stay under the tax line, and choice to leave $12M on the table- both last winter or at the deadline.

This irks me more than making a couple wrong choices in Kluber and the Mondesi dream.

I still have faith we can squeek into the playoffs, but it will be harder to do after the Astros, Rangers and Rays improved. The O's and Jays seem to have improved a little, at the deadline.

Our hopes, once again, rely on Sale and maybe Houck & Whitlock plus Story. If just 2 comeback and do well, it might be enough. If 3 do, we should make the playoffs.

We just got Schreiber and McGuire back, and have yet to get any gains.

Let's hope we can stay healthy and see these upgrades, sooner rather than later:

McGuire> Alfaro

Urias > Arroyo, Reyes or Chang

Story > Chang, Reyes or Arroyo

Sale > Jacques

Houck > Llovera

Whitlock > Bleier

Joely> ???

We gotta get on track- starting tonight!

Go Bello!

When are all the Sox pitchers due back?

Honestly, if we get to the point of everyone not named Kluber being healthy, a rotation of Sale, Paxton, Bello, Crawford and Houck doesn’t look too bad. And a bullpen of Jansen, Martin, Whitlock, Schreiber, Pivetta, Winckowski, Bernardino and Bleier looks even better…

Agree, although I would send Houck to the pen as well, and bullpening every five day.

Story may be back before any pitchers, but CBS has this:

August

11 Sale

15 Houck, Whitlock & Joely

September

1 Kluber

5 Ort

Word is Sale pitched w Woo, Tuesday- the same day Houck and Whitlock throw pen sessions. I'd guess Sale in MLB by maybe AUG 15th and Houck and Whitlock by AUG 25th?

Who knows?

Bradley Blalock was 5-1 with a 2.55 ERA at High A Greenville and struck out 36 in 35 innings. Urias better be a productive major leaguer.

Blalock was no push over. He could turn into a good ML pitcher.

2.3 years of Urias does sound better than 1.3 of Arroyo, 2.3 of Chang and 5+ of Reyes, DHam and EValdez.

We needed a SP'er. I guess these guys have more faith in Sale, Houck and Whitlock returning than I do, or they are all about the future. If it is the latter, please stop the lying and just come out and say it.

All is not lost. The Sox are still very capable of getting to the playoffs. The teams they have to catch are not all that formidable. And in the post season, there is that crapshoot factor. So let's not abandon ship just yet.

Henry's boat needed even more work than we realized.

He’s 22 years old and in A ball and already had Tommy John surgery once. I doubt we miss him..

I’m not abandoning ship. But I’m very displeased with the cruise director’s choice of entertainment…

Pitiful effort by Bloom at the deadline

Bloom's best effort on deadline day brought in Luis Urias.

"In 20 games with the Brewers this season, Urias batted a measly .145/.299/.236 with one homer and five RBIs (51 OPS+) while dealing with injuries."

Great we just recently forgot how AWFUL the Jackie Bradley Jr. trade was so Bloom had to go and remind us by acquiring this Dumpster Fire at the plate!!

Luis Urias. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHA

Seriously. Bloom is playing a JOKE on us! But the sad part is that it isn't April 1st!!!

You were right, the $4M saved on Diekman just paid for the berthing fees and maintenance of Henry's yacht.

It's Henry's joke, not Bloom's.

Did Henry also force Bloom to trade for Jackie Bradley Jr.? Because this feels like a repeat of that trade. How does this move help the Red Sox push for a wildcard spot and the playoffs? Please enlighten us!

Rays making trades.

Jays making trades.

Astros making trades.

Angels making trades.

Rangers making trades.

Red Sox?

Future Hall of Famers going in trades at the deadline, but we got a minor leaguer who flunked out of the big leagues.

The JBJ trade sucked. I said it then, and still think it was horrific.

I don't judge GMs on one deal, and besides, Bloom was the one who signed Renfroe for just $3M.

The overall grade on Bloom's moves is still TBD, because so many involved prospects coming to us, including Wink, Wong and others, but as of now, I would grade It at B- or better.

His main task was to rebuild the farm, and that is an even bigger TBD, but as of now, it looks pretty damn good. We went from bottom 5 or 10 to top 5 or 10.

The budget is in better shape, should JH ever decide to spend again. (BTW, JH has had 2-3 year stretches in the past with very little new spending, so it might happen, again.)

If you want to focus on the worst move every GM has made to judge them, there would be nobody left to take Bloom's place.

.

Chaim Bloom is the CBO of the Boston Red Sox. His title is not farm director. Bloom's main task is the big league team, the one fans follow in Boston, and on TV, and on radio.

Red Sox August records the past two decades, beginning in '03:

15-14

21-7

18-9

9-21

16-13

18-9

16-12

15-13

17-12

9-20

16-12

12-16

15-12

17-13

18-9

18-9

14-13

Bloom Era

9-18

12-16

12-16

1-0

Boston had winning records in 14 of 17 Augusts before Bloom. Red highlights World Champions, usually after adding positive reinforcements (except '07; Gagne). At least two of the bad years were after sell-offs ('12,'14). Maybe Bloom's record will change this month, if everything breaks just right.

Luis Urias the last from 2021-2022 was 24 and 25 years old. He looked like young player coming into his own.

During those two years he hit.244/.340/.426 hit 39 HR's and played plus defense.

This year, only 55 at-bats separate him from that player. If he returns to form the sox just got a starting player with multiple years of team control. Worse case, they got a cheaper, better Arroyo. This also helps plug up the infield next year as well which was looming with question marks even with a healthy Story.

Don't hate this move just because Bloom didn't go out and buy a pitcher, just hate him for not getting a better pitcher.

Again, this is a great trade on it's own, people are just angry its' not a big name, and I get that.

He's still just 26 now.

To me the incredible thing about how the Sox FO has handled this season is staying $11 million under the tax cap (per Cot's). Seems indefensible considering that they increased ticket prices. Shows balls, though, I guess.

It's potentially a good trade. Seems a little early to pronounce it a great trade. The guy was available for a reason.

Well, he is eligible for arbitration next year. And Milwaukee is certainly one of the more budget-conscious teams in the league…

I know, I know. It's just crushing. How will life go on for Sox fans?

Well, consider--

1. Story is due back this weekend, which means three good infield bats--Devers, Story, and Casas--every day. And a 4th, Turner at 2b, when Cora thinks he needs him there so Casas can play 1b and Yoshida can DH. And some combo of Reyes/Chang/Arroyo to help with the defense.

2. Four good bats--Yoshida, Duran, Duvall, and Dugo--in the outfield plus Refsnyder, who is really good vs lefties. Yoshida and Turner share the DH slot, depending on how Cora shapes his day to day lineups. Also, Duran has stolen 23 bases, been caught twice, and forced a bunch of errors that led to additional bases not counted as stolen.

3. Two good catchers, Wong and McGuire (who bats lefty and hit that dinger last night in his first game back).

4. When Sale returns, which could happen as soon as the Detroit series, August 11-13, a pretty good rotation--Paxton, Bello, Sale, Pivetta, and Crawford. If you go by quality starts, they are the best Sox rotation since 2018--barring further injuries, of course (a pretty big if).

5. When Houck and Whitlock return 10-15 days after Sale and presumably go to the bullpen, a pretty good bullpen: Jansen, Whitlock, Houck, Martin, Bernardino, Schreiber, Winckowski, and TBD.

6. Of the above, Devers, Story, Casas, Duran, Yoshida, Wong, McGuire, Dugo, Bello, Crawford, Pivetta, Shreiber, Whitlock, Winckowski, and Houck are all age 30 or younger.

So, yeah, it looks really, really grim for the future and Chaim Bloom is a nut case and should never have been hired.

Well, and this is just my own opinion, there’s a difference between a “good trade” “bar trade” and “great trade” and saying the trade worked out or not.

Guys can get hurt and reduce their value, doesn’t mean at the time it wasn’t a great trade anymore retroactively. Perhaps great is an exaggeration, still I’d rather not debate the semantics, you’re probably right. It was a good trade.
