For now, the power is Story and Casas. We don't know of Yoshida's power will translate to much more than what Verdugo already has. Will there be more moves? Is Dalbec a platoon DH/OFer?

Ugh -- how can we be Red Sox fans and not look at those options and think right now, this sucks even more than last year.

Meanwhile, Chaim and Sam may be celebrating over their mimosas this morning about all the money they just saved.

OF: Yoshida, Kiké, Conforto is better than 2022

IF: 1B is better, SS is a downgrade, loss of Xander affects Raffy how much?

C: about the same as last season if I'm being honest

SP: Sale, Paxton, Whitlock, Bello, Pivetta has higher potential than last year especially if they add in another arm like Kluber

RP: 2023 pen is going to be way better and it's not close

The only real downgrades to me are DH and SS. JD was a 1 fWAR guy last year at DH. I think the Sox can figure that out piecemeal, it will just be offbrand. The drop from Xander to Andrus won't be seen defensively, but he's a bottom third of the order bat.

Worth noting (on the starting front) that Eovaldi does look like someone whose market is being jammed by the QO. He could still be an option. That Jose Quintana deal made me sigh wistfully. I've accepted that Sale is going to strain his UCL again going out to fetch the newspaper.

My ugh was based on your post of just Casas and Story for power, so a lot depends on who they project to play third base and lead the team in run production.

Newspaper? These guys don't read anything made out of trees.

But he'll surely suffer metacarpal funnel scrolling the stock market on his cell.

Senga

Andrus

Conforto

That would be a big finish, honestly. I think they don't get Senga though. Maybe Kluber? It's more likely they just run Verdugo out there in RF this season for better or worse.

Those 3 would be very close to $40M.

If Dugo is acceptable in RF, why didn't they play him there more, this year?

I think we can come close to the 2022 JD at DH among who we have already.

We need another very good bat and it looks like SS, RF or Catcher (via trade only)

What side of the jersey is the new patch on? Could be added strain for Sale.

They moved him there after the trade deadline. Were they looking for a RFer, but only came up with Pham? Maybe it'll be a strict Verdugo/Renfroe platoon in RF?

Cora has seemed very reluctant to platoon Dugo, despite his awful splits.

It's relatively RARE to find good hitting at SS or C position. If those are our options, the bat upgrade would probably be had at Right Field. Will Yoshida be playing left field or right field?

He should play LF.

We are linked to catcher Murphy rumors.

The only bats at SS left are Correa and Swanson- neither are likely coming here, unless JH snaps out of this whatever it is.

RF seems like the best bet, but we'd have to trade or hope Gallo or Conforto come to life in '23.

John Henry is Paul Winchell. Chaim Bloom is Knucklehead Smiff . Winchell has total control of what Knucklehead says and does. So, you can't blame Knucklehead , he is just a dummy.

Let's say the reports we want to reset are true, we'd have about $40M to still spend and have $1-3M as a buffer.

Assuming we will spend it, and the statements we wanted to add 8-9 players to the roster, once can assume we still have 4-5 players to add via trade or free agency. That likely means no major signings, but perhaps a moderate one or two.

Here are some players who play positions of need: (Not saying I want to sign them or the Sox do or will have interest)

I'm sure I'm missing some or missed some that signings...

SP: Rodon, Nate, Syndergaard, Kluber, Stripling, Fujinami

Smyly, Cueto, Bundy, Wacha, Lyles, Greinke

SS: Correa, Swanson, Andrus, Iggy/ 2B (move Story to SS): A Frazier, Solano, Segura, C Hernandez, Harrison, Alberto

RF: Conforto, Gallo, Myers, Duvall, Grossman

C: Zunino, G Sanchez, Casali, Narvaez, R Perez

DH: Brantley, JD, Cruz, Drury, J Turner

I remember when Kike got extended for one year he was pumped and said to the fanbase that we should expect big things this off season as he was promised by Bloom that they would have a winning team next year. I'm sorry but this team isn't remotely close to a winning team and with whatever free agents is remaining ( in Blooms price range) will not make them a winning team IMO.

This off season was really botched IMO.

This offseason was botched last offseason.

We've spent about half of the winter spending budget, but it's not looking great.

We scored 4.54 runs/game last year, which was down near the bottom of the AL. With Bogey and JDM gone and a rookie at 1st base we may well perform worse in 2023. Bloom needs to spend the remaining budget wisely to pick up both a near the top of the rotation starting pitcher and a right handed power hitter (outfield) to avoid remaining in the AL cellar.

If we are talking runs, the names Bogey and JD sound great, but the 135 RBIs they had combined is barely more than JD had by himself in 2018.

I see us being better, offensively at 6 slots, barely worse at 2 (DH & C) and way worse at 1 (SS.)

We may be better at run prevention but run production means guys like Casas, Yoshida, Story and Hernandez have to perform. You take the optimistic view on that possibility. I hope you are right.

We may be worse at run prevention in RF with Dugo in RF not JBJ, but more time from Casas, Kike and Story should more than make up for that and who plays SS?

I'm not predicting great things from some of these players- just a little better health from Kike and Story. The floor set by the 2022 numbers is not some tough line to cross for guys like Yoshida and Casas. They just have to improve on...

.652 Dalbec (353 PAs)

.578 JBJ (290)

.697 Cordero (275)

.672 Phamn (235)

.645 Duran (223)

That's over 1,300 PAs. I think it is realistic to project improvement not optimism. Don't you?

Another view by position:

.683 1B add Casas

.694 LF add Yoshida

.671 CF add more Kike

.661 RF add Dugo and more Ref (platoon looks to be over .800)

.763 DH add Yoshida/Dalbec/Hosmer

Hope we can improve on .724 at 2B and .856 at 3B is not too optimistic, at all.

The tough ones are SS .815 and C .694.

Run prevention starts with pitching. I'm very worried about the run prevention abilities of our starting rotation as presently constituted. Unless they do something we're going to be seeing a lot of Winky, Kutter and even...Seabold.

Haven't you been reading this forum? The Red Sox aren't good enough yet to pay good money for good pitchers!

Well, we did make that run at Zac Eflin! Some big market team won the bidding, though.

You weren’t impressed with Kutter last year?

I did like him, but I do agree the Sox need to push him back further on the depth chart…

The opposite outlook may be more appealing for fans not looking forward to spending another summer in suckitude.

Why not just form a rotation of not-ready-for-primetimers -- go with Bello and Crawford, and bring up Mata and Walter... that way, there's no pressure on Whitlock and Houck's surgery comebacks (and we can stop pretending about Sale and Paxton).

Fans may even watch, because it represents hope for the future. At least it's preferable to rooting for the Yarboroughs or Kluber twilights...

Why would we start the clocks on Mata and Walter just because? Both have barely played above AA, and only one has shown he can get AAA guys out (in a small sample size). Crawford stinks and doesn't belong in this rotation. Also, who are we pushing out of the rotation or the team?

So we go with:

Bello

Crawford

Pivetta

Mata

Walter

and we just sit Paxton and Sale preemptively because they're going to be hurt anyways. Where does Whitlock and Houck fit, who both should be fine well before spring training? I'm not understanding the logic here at all, or am I missing the sarcasm through the internet?

Sometime during the season, the odds are that any and all the rehabbing pitchers coming off injuries and surgeries may have to scale back. Sometime during the season -- which about 99% of fans right now expect to be a lost season -- the team will need more pitchers.

When that happens, who would a fan still watching a last place team want to see: an up-and-coming young arm with upside or Jeurys Familia?
